Mountaineers host powerful Charleston

It’s not like Appalachian State’s baseball team has not been tested so far in 2006. The Mountaineers have taken on ranked teams North Carolina and Alabama during its non-conference schedule. They’ve also faced Auburn from the Southeastern Conference and Buffalo from the MAC.

Aggies hand ASU tough loss

GREENSBORO — A two-out, infield single in the bottom of the 10th inning produced the game-winning run as Appalachian State University dropped a hard-fought 3-2 decision to North Carolina A&T on Wednesday night at War Memorial Stadium. The loss concluded a grueling two-game road trip for Appalachian (9-7), which included contests at Auburn and N.C. A&T on back-to-back evenings.

GRANITE FALLS — Cani
sius has probably seen enough of Appalachian State’s David Rubinstein for one weekend. The freshman from Charlotte belted a two-run home run in the seventh inning that lifted the Mountaineers to a 5-3 victory over the Golden Griffins Sunday at M.S. Deal Stadium.

Pioneers open NWC season
Watauga baseball coach Pete Hardee has done his best to put together a pre-conference schedule that would test his young team. Instead of loading up on a lot of potentially easy victories, Hardee has scheduled some of the top programs in western North Carolina. Included was Mount Tabor, which the Pioneers beat 5-0 Thursday at Watauga’s field.

New Bern survives shootout
After 80 minutes and a shootout, Watauga still had not solved New Bern. The final game of the first day of the Mellow Mushroom Invitational saw the two teams deadlocked after five shoot-out attempts, leaving the balance of the game to sudden death.

Watauga earns revenge
Vengeance is a dish best served cold. It was cold, it was windy, and it tasted pretty good Thursday as Watauga’s boys’ tennis team took a measure of vengeance against visiting Freedom, beating the Patriots 7-2. Freedom was the only team to beat Watauga in the regular season last year and the only conference team to have beaten the Pioneers (2-1, 1-0 Northwestern 4-A Conference) in years.

WHS softball team drops two straight
Back-to-back road games handed Watauga’s softball team two losses Friday and Saturday, but they were games that should help the team down the road. Thursday’s game at Ashe County ended with a 5-0 Husky win, while Reagan beat Watauga 8-7 in the 10th inning.

Watauga earns split
CHARLOTTE — A busy ride to the field and a misunderstanding of where the venue was left the Watauga girls’ club lacrosse team with just 10 minutes to prepare for its game against Myers Park Saturday. The Pioneers lost 14-5 to Myers Park, but were able to bounce back for a 13-5 win over South Mecklenburg.
