ASU women exit SoCon tourney after one game
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Appalachian State’s women started three seniors for their Southern Conference tournament opener against Western Carolina University.
WCU countered with three freshmen and zero seniors at tip-off.
But when veteran leadership should have carried the Mountaineers on Friday, the upperclassmen failed to come up with the plays that could have helped coach Adrienne Shuler get her first tournament victory.
Instead, WCU freshmen Lauren Powell, Amelia Miller and Teshymia Tillman scored key second-half baskets, sophomore Jessika Johnson forced a late turnover and sophomore Monique Dawson drained 7-of-8 free throws in the final minute to seal the Catamounts’ 80-71 victory at McAlister Fieldhouse.
