ASU dumps ‘Cats
DAVIDSON — As the Southern Conference’s women’s basketball regular season winds down, Appalachian State’s Kiki Conyers is just starting to warm up. The senior poured in a season-high 24 points, going 8-for-8 from the charity stripe in the process, to lead the Mountaineers to a 74-68 victory over Davidson Tuesday at Belk Arena.

Oak Hill eyes third straight Classic title
Oak Hill Academy coach Steve Smith hopes the third time is a charm when it comes to the Champions Classic basketball tournament. So far, the first two have been perfect. Oak Hill Academy goes into Friday’s first round game against tournament veteran Our Savior New American with a 37-0 record and a 53-game winning streak. The Warriors are the two-time defending Classic champions and the two-time high school basketball national champs.

Watauga eyes return to top of standings
Look out Freedom Patriots. The only team to beat Watauga’s boys’ tennis team last regular season is on the top of the hit list for this year’s edition of Pioneer tennis. The Pioneers are led by new coach Lyle Stevens and he said the team is looking forward to their first home match, against Freedom, March 9.

BOILING SPRINGS — Tuesday’s baseball game between Appalachian State and Gardner-Webb was halted in the top of the 13th inning because of darkness with the score tied 4-4.

Returning from their most successful season, Watauga’s girls’ club lacrosse team has been building their roster and has over 30 players so far.

Hargrave to test Patterson
Though Chris Chaney is coaching at a different school, the results are still the same. Chaney, who led Laurinburg Institute to an undefeated season last year, moved on to Patterson School, an institution located just north of Lenoir, this season. So far, Chaney has Patterson undefeated heading into its showdown with Hargrave Military Academy.

Watauga’s Jacob Earp wrestles Mike Roberts of East Mecklenburg in the 130-pound finals of the Western Regional tournament at Freedom Saturday. Earp beat Roberts 3-2. Link to story below for more.

Fantastic Five
MORGANTON — Watauga’s wrestlers hit a small road bump on the stretch run to the state tournament Saturday. The Pioneers got over that hump, sending five wrestlers to next weekend’s state tournament, but none of the five qualifiers looked sharp in their final match.

Newcomers help ASU to DH split
KANNAPOLIS – For a college debut, it was a good day for Garrett Sherrill and for Rand Smith. Pitching his first game in an Appalachian State uniform, Sherrill, a freshman from A.L. Brown High in Kannapolis, turned in five strong innings of work in leading the Mountaineers to a 12-6 victory at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium Sunday in the first game of a doubleheader.

App women ground GSU
STATESBORO, Ga. – For 14 straight games, Georgia Southern’s women’s basketball team was able to find a way to beat Appalachian State. In just one year, the opposite is true. Kiki Conyers hit three free throws in the final 11 seconds on her way to a team-high 14 points as Appalachian State won its third-straight game with a 78-73 victory over Georgia Southern Saturday at Hanner Fieldhouse.
