Howard Woodrow Wilson

Mr. Howard Woodrow Wilson was born June 14, 1912 on White Oak Road near Bakersville; one of seven children born to Edd and Mollie Pannell Wilson. The family raised sheep and cattle. Howard spent many of his early  days herding sheep to and from mountain pastures.

Foretelling his future mechanical career, Howard was able to rescue the members of the Bowman High School basketball team who were riding , in a "Whippet" automobile that broke down on the way to the state championship in Durham, They lost the game anyway. He graduated from  Bowman in 1931.

In 1936, he married Lela Wilson from across the mountain in Snow Creek. Their 69 years together have been heaven on earth for them and their family and friends. In a letter to her fellow retired school teachers, Lela said: “I was married in 1936 to Howard W. Wilson; this, in all of my  life's experiences, was the best decision that I ever made.”

His experience as the first student school bus driver in North Carolina, led to a driving and maintenance job with the State Highway Department. Because of his natural skills and work ethic, Howard was promoted to a three-county supervisory position that exempted him from military duty in World War II. For his service to the state, Mr. Wilson received a letter of  commendation from Governor Clyde Hoey.

After the war, Mr. Wilson opened a garage and gas station in Bakersville. He could always "fix-it" when no one else could-or would. Health issues forced him to sell this successful business.

He became post-master at Toecane in 1951, but his proud Democrat political heritage led to his retirement from that position after the Eisenhower administration came into power. Howard and his family then moved to Spruce Pine where he and his brother Harry operated the Spruce Pine Gulf Station and later the Tri-County Wholesale, a grocery distributor.

After the purchase of a farm in Avery County in 1970, he began a new and lengthy career as a Christmas tree farmer. He was one of the pioneers of  that industry.

Always a devout Christian, Mr. Wilson was chairman of the Board of Deacons at Snow Hill Baptist Church when the present church building was  erected. He was a deacon and Sunday School Teacher at Central Baptist Church for many years.

A Master Mason, he was the oldest Mason in Mitchell County at the  time of his death.

Howard Wilson's life was always focused on his family: his wife, daughters Elizabeth and Margaret, grandchildren Lauren, Adrian, Brian, Craig, Eric, and Alan; great-grandchildren Ada, Zebulon, Isaac and Bethany.

He always treated his sons-in-law, Ron McKinney and Chuck Watkins, like  the sons he never had.

Services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 2:30 p.m. in Central Baptist Church with Billy Stewart, Larry Greene, and Jim Sutton officiating. The family will receive friends from 1-2:30 p.m.
