Plans for a new Watauga High School took an unexpected turn this week.
During their Feb. 13 meeting, members of the Watauga County Board of Education voted unanimously to temporarily halt the process of designing a new high school facility on the existing WHS property.

Dashing through the snow
Monday wasn’t just another snow day for Watauga County school children. It was also a day to play in the snow for Valle Crucis grandmother Mary Mast. Mast sped down a steep hillside along with her 12-year-old grandchildren, Stephen Williams and Mary Katherine Mast. While the kids preferred to ride on new-fangled plastic disks and snowboards, Mast hopped upon the old-fashioned wooden sled with red metal runners. “I can steer it better,” she said. When asked if this was how she spent quality time with her grandkids, she confessed with a smile, “Truth is. I do this even when my grandchildren are not around.” Photo by Marie Freeman |
