Pioneers close out regular season with win
TAYLORSVILLE — With a depleted team, more depleted than usual, Watauga’s girls’ basketball team held on to a 68-58 win over Alexander Central Tuesday to end the regular season on a high note.

ASU’s Stokes earns medal
December was a pretty good month for Appalachian State football player Brian Stokes. Unbeknownst to the 27-year-old from Burlington, while he was a member of Appalachian State’s Division I-AA national championship team, he was being awarded the Purple Heart for injuries suffered as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps in Iraq in 2004.

Ratliff to help build program
One of Watauga football’s jack-of-all trades is headed for the next level. Cody Ratliff signed to play football for North Carolina Tech, a group of community colleges that are working together to form a junior college and field a team for the first time.

Defense not enough
Watauga’s girls’ basketball team played defense well enough Friday to beat East Burke on Senior Night, but the Pioneers’ offense struggled too much to push past the Cavaliers. In East Burke’s 61-41 win over Watauga, the Pioneers were outscored by just one point in both the second and third quarters, but the Cavs ran away in the first and fourth.

This time, there would be no last-second drive that would end in an Appalachian State victory. Just five days earlier, D.J. Thompson went coast-to-coast to drop in a layup and beat The Citadel. Last Thursday, Thompson was cut off in the lane and Demetrius Scott’s shot before time expired did not go in, giving Wofford a 60-59 victor in front of 1,555 at the Holmes Center.
