Graham Edward Cash
Mr. Graham Edward Cash, 83, of Franklinton, N.C., died Sunday, Feb. 5, 2006, in Boone, N.C., following an extended illness.
He was born in Franklin County, the son of Irving Cash and Oza Layton Cash Hagwood.
Mr. Cash was retired from Burlington Mills, where he worked as a cloth room supervisor with 38 years service. He served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Franklinton American Legion Post #52 and also attended the Senior Center Coffee Club. Mr. Cash was a member of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Sondra C. Edwards of Boone, N.C.; a sister, Adell Wynne of Franklinton, N.C.; a brother, Hugh I. Cash of Greenville, S.C.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Blackley Cash.
Graveside services were conducted Thursday, Feb. 9, at 2 p.m., in the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church Cemetery. A Service of Remembrance followed in the church sanctuary.

Beverly Ann Boyer Downs
Mrs. Beverly Ann Boyer Downs, 74, of 1800 Powderhorn Mountain Road, Deep Gap, died Monday, Feb. 6, 2006, at Watauga Medical Center.
She was born Oct. 6, 1931, in Fairmont, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Golda and Paul Boyers.
Mrs. Downs was President and co-founder of the Downs Group, Inc., a Charlotte based advertising agency until its closing in 1993. She graduated from Charleston High School in Charleston, West Virginia and attended Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio. She was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Charlotte and Campbell Memorial Chapel on Powderhorn Mountain in Deep Gap.
She was a member of many organizations, including Chi Omega Fraternity, Daughters of the American Revolution – Daniel Boone Chapter, former president of the Children’s Theater of Charlotte, former president of ICITA (Worldwide network of advertising agencies – first woman president), Powderhorn Mountain Book Club, and the Charlotte Little Theater. Her many interests included piano, miniature doll houses, reading, gardening, gourmet cooking, finance, decorating, reading and enjoying the deer and wildlife at her home on Powderhorn Mountain.
Mrs. Downs is survived by her son, Kevin William Downs of Boone.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William F. "Bill" Downs; and one daughter, Kimberley Downs Stewman.
Services will be conducted Friday afternoon, Feb. 10, at 2:00 o'clock, at Campbell Memorial Chapel in Powderhorn Mountain. The body will lie in state at the church from 1-2 p.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Bill Rogers. Burial will follow in the Campbell Memorial Chapel Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday afternoon, following the service, at the Powderhorn Mountain Club House.

Judy Ann Johnson
Ms. Judy Ann Johnson, 58, of 211 Milton Brown Heirs Road, Boone, formerly of the Meat Camp Community, died Tuesday evening, Feb. 7, 2006, at Glenbridge Health and Rehabilitation.
She was born Oct. 6, 1947 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Oney Ray and Ella Bryan Johnson.
Mrs. Johnson was a homemaker and attended Liberty Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Belle Day, Mrs. Anna Mae Miller and husband, Thomas, and Mrs. Jeannie Bumgarner and husband, Bill, all of Boone; two brothers, Howard Johnson and Don Johnson and wife, Faye, all of Boone. She is also survived by two nieces and two great-nieces.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant brother and one brother-in-law, Paul Day.
Services will be conducted Friday afternoon, Feb. 10, at 2:00 o'clock, at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state from 1:00 until 2:00 o'clock. Officiating will be the Rev. Sonny Hagaman and the Rev. David Ward. Burial will follow in the Bryan Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday afternoon from 1-2 p.m., at the funeral home, prior to the service.

Dorothy Roark Price
Mrs. Dorothy Roark Price, 97, of Mountain City, Tenn., died Sunday, Feb. 5, 2006, at Mountain City Care Center.
She was born in Ashe County, N.C., and was the daughter of the late Joseph L. and Mary M. Cole Roark.
Mrs. Roark resided in Lenoir, N.C. for many years before moving to Mountain City. She attended Taylorsville Church of God.
Survivors include three daughters, Nell Price Sluder and Lena Price Gore and husband, John, all of Mountain City, and Sophia Price Parker and husband, Russell, of Lenoir, N.C.; two sons, Ervil “Bud” Price, Jr. and wife, Janet, of California, and Ronnie Price and wife, Elaine, of Lenoir; 18 grandchildren; and 36 great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a grandson, Larry and Will Jean Sluder of Zionville.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ervil Louis Price; a daughter, Carol Price Trivette; a son, Roger Price; and nine sisters; and two brothers.
Services were conducted Thursday evening at 8 p.m., at Mountain City Funeral Home, with the Rev. Carl Ray Witherspoon officiating. The committal service and interment were conducted Friday morning at 11 a.m., at Price Cemetery in Creston, N.C.

Charles Preston Trexler
Mr. Charles Preston Trexler, 86, of Eastview St., Hudson, N.C., passed away Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2006, at Camelot Manor Nursing Home.
He was born April 5, 1919 in Watauga County, to the late John L. Trexler and Minnie Eldridge Trexler.
Mr. Trexler was a member of the Philadelphia Lutheran Church.
Survivors include two sons, James P. Trexler of Hudson, N.C., William R. Roberson of Miami, Fla.; one daughter, Rebecca Lee Mignon of St. Augustine, Fla.; one brother, Earl Trexler of Blowing Rock, N.C.; four sisters, Elizabeth Dubose of Seale, Ala., Margaret Holman of Lenoir, N.C., Ruth Hollars of Lenoir, N.C., Lucille Young of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy E. Trexler; three brothers, Richard Trexler, Tom Trexler and John Otis “Buddy” Trexler; and one sister, Shelby Jean Trexler.
Services were conducted Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. in the Pendry’s Chapel with the Rev. Terrell Long officiating.

Nouel Hampton Underwood
Mrs. Nouel Hampton Underwood, 83, of 315 Horseshoe Drive, Boone, died Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2006, at her residence.
She was born Dec. 20, 1922, in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Monroe and Lelia Greene Hampton.
She was co-owner of Shorty’s Cafe in Boone and the Mystery Hill Entertainment Complex in Blowing Rock. She was a member of Three Forks Baptist Church.
Survivors include one daughter, Ms. Gay Underwood of Boone; one son, Wayne Underwood and wife, Sharon, of Blowing Rock; three grandsons, Matt Underwood and wife, Angie, of Lenoir, Mark Underwood and wife, Crystal, of Boone and Lucus Underwood of Blowing Rock; two sisters, June Stamey, and Betty Jones and husband, Dean, all of Boone, and two brothers, Allen Hampton and wife, Opal, and Barney Hampton and wife, Tommie, all of Boone; five great-grandchildren, Brock, Roark, and Jessica Underwood of Lenoir, and Montana and Cheyenne Underwood of Boone; two sisters-in-law, Effie Hampton of Boone and Faye Hampton of Deland, Fla. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rondia Underwood; one sister, Marie Critcher; and four brothers, Guy, Dan, Shorty, and John Hampton; one sister-in-law, Tois Hampton; and two brothers-in-law, Buford Stamey and Norman Critcher.

Pansy Wolfe Bumgarner
Mrs. Pansy Wolfe Bumgarner, 88, of 211 Milton Brown Heirs Road, Boone, and formerly of 307 Delmar Street, died Thursday afternoon, Feb. 2, 2006 at Glenbridge Health & Rehabilitation.
She was born in Wilkes County, a daughter of the late Floyd F. and Eugenia Dula Wolfe.
Mrs. Bumgarner was a retired machine operator form TRW, and had worked at the Gold Room at ASU. She was a member of Perkinsville Baptist Church, and an avid flower and vegetable gardener.
Survivors include two daughters, Norma Wilcox of Boone, and Judy Psillas and husband, George, of Spartanburg, S.C.; one son, Charles “Buz” Bumgarner and wife, Donna, of Las Cruces, New Mexico; six grandchildren, Dempsey Wilcox, III and wife, Margie, and Debra Wilcox of Boone, Vicki Huffman and husband, Andy Omundson of Greenwood, S.C., Patrick Huffman of Spartanburg, S.C., Cameron Bumgarner of Arizona and Leslie Bumgarner of New Mexico; three brothers, Joe, Bob and Dennis Wolfe; and three sisters, Gwendolyn Hart, Martha Brown, and Annie Ruth Laws.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas W. Bumgarner; four sisters; Bertha Holman, Allie Eller, Elsie Brookshire, and Justine Hollender; and six brothers, Lawrence, Blaine, Ace, Delbert, Junior and Earl Wolfe.
Services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Perkinsville Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Harold Bennett. Burial followed at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens.

Margaret Foster Bynum
Mrs. Margaret Foster Bynum, 92, of 16440 U.S. Highway 421 South, Deep Gap, died Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006, at Avante Nursing Care in Wilkesboro.
She was born Sept. 1, 1913 in Wilkes County, a daughter of the late Arthur and Senie Williams Foster. Mrs. Bynum was a homemaker.
She is survived by two sons, James Bynum and wife, Nancy, of Deep Gap and Claude Foster of Moravian Falls; two daughters, Betty Joines and husband, Donald, of Moravian Falls and Judy Acker and husband, Micky, of Charlotte; five grandsons, Ronald Joines of Louisville, Ky., Timmy Joines of North Wilkesboro, Brock Foster of Moravian Falls, Billy Bynum of Millers Creek and Sam Bynum of Deep Gap; two granddaughters, Beverly Wyatt of Millers Creek and Clancy Bynum of Furgeson; and one sister, Myrtle Williams of Millers Creek.
At the request of Mrs. Margaret Foster Bynum, there will be no funeral service.

Salvador Joseph Giallanza
Mr. Salvador Joseph Giallanza, 88, of 1818 Deerfield Road, Boone, N.C., died peacefully at home late on Friday evening, Feb. 3, 2006. 
He was born in New Orleans, La., on Valentine's Day, Feb. 14, 1917, to Paul and Corinne Giallanza.
As a teenager, he boxed for the Fifth Ward Athletic Association, where Archbishop John William Shaw often attended at ringside to see his favorite fighter. Mr. Giallanza worked in the family produce business with stalls in the New Orleans French Market and took trucks as far as Mexico to obtain fresh vegetables for the New Orleans restaurant trade. The name "Giallanza" in sidewalk tiles still fronts three homes in the French Quarter.
Starting as a stevedore on the docks of New Orleans, with membership in the International Longshoremen's Association, he worked 39 years for the United Fruit Company. During WW II, as a gang boss and rigger, he secured military tanks and even locomotives to the open decks of U.S. Navy cargo ships.
He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose for 51 years and attained its most prestigious service award, The Pilgrim Degree. He was one of the founders of Lodge #35 in New Orleans.
A resident of Boone, N.C. since 1990, he was affectionately known as "Mr. Sal" to a generation of New Orleans Snowballs customers at the Carriage Square location where he served as a manager.
Mr. Giallanza was a beloved member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church in Boone. He is remembered for his love of sports and animals, especially dogs.
He is survived by his wife, Lottie Langley Giallanza of Boone; daughter, Patricia Joynes and husband, Monty, of Boone; and son, Edouard Quatrevaux and wife, Karen, of Mandeville, La. He was the adored grandfather of Pamela Brown and husband, Tracy, and great-grandfather of Rachel Tilghman and Lily Brown, all of Boone. He is also survived by nieces and nephews in southeastern Louisiana.
He was preceded in death by his parents as well as two brothers and two sisters.
A funeral service will be held at Mount Vernon Baptist church on Tuesday, Feb. 7, at 11:00 a.m, officiated by the Rev. Allan Blume and the Rev. Bud Russell, with interment following at the Mount Vernon Baptist church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the church the morning of the service.

Peggy Jane Greer Haas, 67, of 120 Oak Street, Jefferson, N.C., died Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2006, at the home of her son in Sparta, N.C.
Survivors include a son, Mike Haas and wife, Libby, of Sparta; two grandchildren, Matthew Haas of Sparta, Jennifer Bryant and husband, Lester Ray, of Mt. Airy; a great-grandchild, Kathryn Michele Bryant; a sister, Frances Nadeen Danner and husband, Robert, of Orlando, Fla.; two brothers, Robert “Buck” Greer and wife, Marzetta, of Lenoir, and James “Jimmy” Greer and wife, Faye, of Boone; a special friend, Boyd Arnette of Boone; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Ollie Hodges Greer.
A memorial service was conducted Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Oak Grove Baptist Church in Boone. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Mr. Ira Harmon, 87, of 201 Ira Harmon Road, Vilas, died Thursday evening, Feb. 2, 2006, at Watauga Medical Center.
He was born Nov. 13, 1918 in Watauga County, a son of the late David and Victoria Tester Harmon.
Mr. Harmon was a retired farmer.
Survivors include his wife, Vera Hicks Harmon; three sons, Roger Harmon and wife, Barbara, of Sugar Grove, Kenneth Harmon and wife, Ruth, of Vilas, and David Harmon and wife, Jamie, of Boone; two daughters, Carol Lowrance of Vilas, and Carleen Wilson and husband, Russell, of Dudley, N.C.; four granddaughters, Angela Crawford and husband, Chris, of Weaverville, N.C., Kimberly Harmon of Atlanta, Ga., Emily Younce and husband, Jeff, of Vilas, and Melanie Ramsey and husband, Kane, of Garner, N.C.; four grandsons, Mike Harmon of Charlotte, Jeff Lowrance and wife, Cynthia, of Boone, Chris Harmon of Fayetteville, N.C., and Jason Harmon of Boone; one brother, Arlis Tester and wife, Bina, of Vilas, and Davie Arnett of Lenoir. Five great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Lula Austin Henson
Mrs. Lula Austin Henson, 99, of Old US 421, Vilas, died Thursday morning, Feb. 2, 2006 at home, surrounded by her family.
She was born in Watauga County, June 26, 1906, a daughter of the late Sam and Minnie Payne Austin.
Mrs. Henson attended Appalachian Training School. She was a teacher at both Aho and Bamboo Schools. She was a long time member of Henson Chapel United Methodist Church and was a homemaker.
Surviving include two daughters, Nancy Murray and husband, Charles, of Claremont; and Shirley Long and husband, Tom, of Vilas; three sons, John Henson and wife, Helen, of Vilas, Bill Henson and wife, Janice, of Laurel Springs, and Rusty Henson and wife, Cara, of Boone; three granddaughters, Nanette Moore and husband, Buddy, of Vilas, Angela Henson of Charlotte, and Robin Ashley and husband, Greg, of Jefferson; three grandsons, Jeff Murray and wife, Tammi, of Claremont, Scott Henson of Laurel Springs, and Charlie Earp and wife, Kim, of Vilas; nine great-grandchildren, Samuel Henson, Ethan Ashley, Chelsie, Chase, Christian, and Chandler Murray, Andrew, Jeremy and Jacob Earp; two sisters, Ella Beshears of Elkin, and Daisy Adams of Boone; and one brother, Ned Austin and wife, Bobbie, of Boone.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Henson; her parents, Sam and Minnie Payne Austin; one daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Ralph Surratt; two brothers, Collis and Lewis Austin; one grandson, David Surratt; and one great-granddaughter, Charlie Rae Murray.
Services were conducted Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m., at Henson Chapel United Methodist Church, officiated by the Rev. James McKinney. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

David Webb McConnell
Mr. David Webb McConnell, 45, of Jonas Ridge, N.C., died Thursday, Feb. 2, 2006.
He was of the Lutheran faith and was an electrician, employed by Port City Electric.
Survivors include his wife, Susie Hollifield McConnell; his mother, Sue Correll Rohen and her husband, Jim, of Lincolnton; his uncle, Ben Luther and wife, Margaret; his aunt, Jennie Correll; and Mark Edwards and his family, Amy, Roger and Sidney Nash; two step-sons, Casey Hollifield and wife, Anna, Kaleb Hollifield; and two step-granddaughters, Cora and Abigail, all of Newland. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
Memorial services were conducted Sunday afternoon, Feb. 5, at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Crossnore, officiated by the Rev. Leander Hefner.

Nora Mast Wilson
Mrs. Nora Mast Wilson, 98, of 466 Odes Wilson Road, Zionville, died Saturday morning, Feb. 4, 2006, at her home.
She was born Oct. 12, 1907, in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Joseph C. (Pete) and Nora Phillips Mast.
Her aunt and uncle, John H. and Nancy Elizabeth Wilson Mast, took her as an infant when her mother died.
Mrs. Wilson attended Silverstone Elementary School and graduated in 1925 from Appalachian Training School in Boone.
In 1927 she graduated from Appalachian State Normal School in Boone.
She taught for three years at the old Silverstone Elementary School and one year at Mabel Elementary School.
Mr. and Mrs. Wilson married in 1931 and were dairy farmers on the farm she continued to live on.
Mrs. Wilson was an active member of the Cove Creek Baptist Church where she served as Sunday School Teacher, Woman’s Missionary Union Director, church youth director, and children’s church training union director for more than 40 years.
Three Forks Baptist Association served as U.M.W. Director and youth director many years, which included the G.A. Organization (Girls Auxiliary).
Camp Joy Founder and Director from 1947 through camping session in 1970.
Mr. and Mrs. Wilson donated the camp to the Three Forks Baptist Association but continued to direct for 18 years.
The camp was for boys and girls.
She joined the Cove Creek Home Demonstration Club when it was organized in 1932.
The name changed to “Extension Homemakers” and later became Cove Creek “Extension and Community Association” club.
Her activities included all elected offices, including record keeping.
She has continued her membership in the Green Valley Extension and Community Club.
As a member of the Extension Homemakers Council, she served as president 1977-1978; treasurer, 1978-2000; founder and chairman of the Extension Homemakers’ Christmas Fair 1972-1977. The fair continues to this date.
She always had an active part in the annual “Achievement” event.
She was a State A&P Leadership Award recipient in 1972 and received certified volunteer unit recognition for more than 10,000 volunteer hours.
Mrs. Wilson served on the Agricultural Extension Advisory Board as vice chairman two years.
She served on and was chairman of the Watauga County Resource Development Council and Home Economics Study communities, which developed much of the Extension Home Economics Long Range program plans.
She was Chairman of the Environmental Committee of the Watauga County Community Development Council.
Through her interest and encouragement, this committee organized the Environmental, Beautification and Recycling Committee, which encouraged participation of county garden clubs, elementary schools and Extension and Community clubs to participate in growing flowers in many areas of Watauga County, and recycling of all types of materials. Awards for these groups were presented at the Farm-City Recognition Banquet each November. She served as the chairman of the County Community Development Junk Car Removal project 1973-74.
She served on the Farm-City 1974-75. She served on the decorating committee, providing many flower arrangements for the head table and other decorations. She was active in the Northwest North Carolina Development Association, serving on several committees. In 1984 she received the Outstanding Volunteer for Family Living Division of W.N.C.D.A. from Watauga County.
Growing flowers and beautification projects were a passion of Mrs. Wilson. Projects included Triangle at Cove Creek School, Courthouse flower boxes and Cove Creek Post Office. She has provided many arrangements for formal events and presented numerous programs to a variety of groups on growing vegetables and flowers.
She helped organize the Watauga Doers Council in 1969 and served as chairman 1972-74. This committee was sponsored by Blue Ridge Electric Membership Cooperative, which provided opportunities for attending a variety of meetings. In 1973 she was awarded a Certificate of Outstanding Community Service presented by the Watauga Doers Council.

1999 – Watauga County January’s Woman of the Year presented by Watauga County Council on the Status of Women
2000 – Certificate of Appreciation from Watauga County Extension and Community Council for 22 years as Treasurer, 1978-2000
2003 – Special Service Award in Appreciation for many years of leadership to the Beautification and Recycling Committee, Farm-City Award 2003
Survivors include her long-time friends and caregivers, Margaret and Tom Tester and Jackie Lawrence and family, several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, and aunt and uncle, she was preceded in death by sisters, Victoria Bingham, Inez Horton, Harriett Brooks and brothers, Clarence, Oscar, James (Jim), John, Jake and Joe Mast.
A celebration of life or Nora Mast will be conducted at Cove Creek Baptist Church. The services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 7, at 3 o’clock. Officiating will be the Rev. Tony Duck and the Rev. Doug Robinson. Entombment will follow in the Cove Creek Baptist Church Gardens Mausoleum.
The family will receive friends Tuesday afternoon from 1-2:30 p.m., at the church, prior to the service.
