Sunday ceremony in Boone to honor
N.C. National Guard unit
to be deployed to Iraq
Staff Sergeant C.J. Lewis packs his dufflebag after having all his gear checked at Boone's National Guard Armory. Lewis and other members of the National Guard's 1451st Transportation Company underwent a "Soldier Readiness Process" Thursday afternoon. Less than two months after returning from hurricane relief efforts on the Gulf Coast, the Boone-based 1451st Transportation Company is preparing for its next mission in Iraq. While this is the unit’s first overseas mobilization since U.S. troop deployment in Iraq began, approximately 40 of its soldiers have already served in Iraq with other units — most notably in 2004 when several were attached to the 1450th Transportation Company of Lenoir. Departing Feb. 2 from the National Guard Armory in Boone, the 1451st will report to an Indiana base for a brief training period before landing in Iraq, where they are expecting to serve an approximate 15-month tour of duty. On Sunday, Jan. 29, at 2 p.m. at Watauga High School, the transportation company will be honored during a public ceremony. Barbara Daye, with the local Family Support Group, extends an invitation to the community to come out and show its support for this effort. “When the 1451st was activated during Operation Desert Storm, soldiers and their families greatly appreciated the many ways the community reached out to support them,” she said. “One of their favorite memories is of the number of people, many waving flags and holding signs, who lined the streets and roads of the departure route when they left Boone. We encourage the community to do this again when they leave next week.” A guard spokesman indicated that the actual departure time and route will be announced later. Photo by Marie Freeman |

Sideways on Shadowline
A Friday afternoon crash tangled up three vehicles and tied up traffic at the corner of Blowing Rock Road and Shadowline Drive, but resulted in no serious injuries, according to Capt. Curtis Main of the Boone Police Department. Main said the wreck was caused when the driver of a 1992 Isuzu sedan made an errant lefthand turn in front of two northbound vehicles, a 1998 Honda and 2003 Toyota. Main said none of the drivers required medical care, but the driver of the Isuzu, Martin Jones of Boone, was cited for unsafe movement. Photo by Jason Reagan |
