Jay N. Barney

Mr. Jay N. Barney, 85, of Marion, Ind., died Dec. 25, 2005, at his residence.

He was born Feb. 11, 1920 in Marion, Ind. to the late Joel and Opal Swinford Barney.

Mr. Barney was a graduate of Marion High School, and a former Deacon at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Marion. He was the owner of Barclain Leasing in Gas City, Ind. He married Gladys Hornbeck on Feb. 20, 1980. He was an Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys Hornbeck Barney; three sons, Jay Barney of Tempe, Ariz., David Barney and wife, Lisa, of Wabash, Ind., and James Barney and wife, Melony, of Indianapolis, Ind.; one daughter, Jane Johnson and husband, Randall, of Marion, Ind.; one step-son, Larry Beltz and wife, Sandy, of Tucson, Ariz.; two step-daughters, Susan Duke and husband, Dan,  and Becky McDonough, both of Boone, N.C.; a sister, Jean Ulrich of Angola, Ind.; a son-in-law, James Palmer of Marion, Ind.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Carole Palmer who died August 25, 2004.

Private memorial services will be held at a later date.

Russell A. Cornett Sr.

Mr. Russell A. Cornett, Sr., 84, of Grandview Heights, Boone, died Tuesday morning, Dec. 27, 2005, at his home.

Survivors include his wife, Cosby Campbell Cornett; his children, R.A. Cornett, Jr. and wife, Brenda, of Vilas; Marvella Cornett Baker and husband, Bob, of Boone; Denver Cornett of Boone; and Sherry Cornett Lindquist and husband, Kurt, of Charlotte; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Ruth Isaacs and husband, Kenneth, of Boone; and one brother, Bud Cornett and wife, Eloise, of Sugar Grove.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ida and Marion Cornett; one brother, Jack Cornett; and a grandson, Scotty Cornett.

Services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Gordon Noble. The body will lie in state at the chapel from 12:30-2 p.m. Burial will follow in the Piney Grove Cemetery.

Leigh Lane Edwards

Ms. Leigh Lane Edwards, 20, of Matthews, N.C., died Saturday, Dec. 24, 2005 at her home. 

She was born August 1, 1985, in Charlotte, the daughter of Joe and Linda Edwards of Matthews. 

Leigh Lane was a graduate of East Mecklenburg High School and an honors student at Appalachian State University majoring in Public Relations and Spanish.  She served as a RA in East Hall, Curator of The Looking Glass Art Gallery, volunteered with Shelter Rock Appalachian Relief Ministries, Habitat for Humanity, and various community outreach programs in Boone.  She attended Central Church of God in Charlotte and the Alliance Fellowship Church in Boone.

In Leigh Lane’s words, “I have learned of the beauty of community – of uniting one’s neighbors to share life, love and concern of others.  I’ve learned that one’s life is most effective when selflessly given to help and encourage others.  And most importantly, I’ve learned that I love empowering others to teach and be equally successful.”

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her brother, Logan Edwards; grandmother, Lane White; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A funeral service was held Thursday, Dec. 29, at 2 p.m. at Central Church of God, 5301 Sardis Road, Charlotte, with the Reverend Loran Livingston officiating.  Interment followed at Forest Lawn East Cemetery in Matthews.  The family greeted friends for one hour prior to the service at the church.

Kenneth Glenn Younger Jr.

Mr. Kenneth Glenn “Ken” Younger, Jr., 80, of 3639 Country Club Drive, Gastonia, N.C., died Tuesday, Dec. 27, 2005 at his residence. 

He was born in Raleigh, N.C., raised in Tampa, Fla., the son of the late Kenneth Glenn Younger, Sr. and Vivian Johnson Younger.

Mr. Younger served in the United States Army Air Corps/15th Air Force during World War II, where from his service in the European theatre he was awarded the Purple Heart, an Air Medal with seven clusters, four Battle Stars, the Good Conduct Medal, as well as the Presidential Unit Citation. After the war, he entered Duke University on a football scholarship and graduated with the Class of 1949. He began his long and distinguished career in the Transportation Industry with employment at Roadway Express, Sea-Land Services, Inc., Hennis Freight Lines, and Carolina Freight Corporation where he held positions of President and CEO, retiring in 1994 as Carolina Freight's Chairman of the Board.

Through his leadership in the transportation industry, Mr. Younger gave of his talents by serving on many Boards including Carolina Freight Corporation, Kenan Transfer, the N.C. Department of Transportation, U.S. Department of Transportation,   He was the former chairman of the N.C. Trucking Association and Trucking Management, Inc., and also served on the boards of the American Trucking Association, the N.C. State Ports Authority, and the N.C. Port Railway Commission.

His personal ethos was to "live a good life, treat people the way that he wanted to be treated, and to give when and where he could". He was loved and beloved by his family and friends. His generosity, wit, and wisdom touched many throughout his life and we have all been blessed. His stewardship of time and resources led to other pursuits and involvement with the following boards: Duke University Trustee Emeriti,  Duke University Medical Center Advisory Board, the Governor's Business Council, Gaston Memorial Hospital, the N.C. Sports Hall of Fame, the N.C. Citizens for Business and Industry, and the First Union Corporation. From his many tireless works he was awarded the Boy Scouts of Americas highest award in 1981, the "Silver Beaver" Award, as well as inducted into the N.C. Order of the Long Leaf Pine in 2002 by Governor Michael Easley. 

Mr. Younger was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Gastonia, the Gaston Country Club, The Elk River Country Club, Cashie Country Club, and the Boone Country Club. An avid golfer well into retirement, he scored his age on a number of occasions, most recently scoring a 79 in December of 2004.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Norma Lee Coleman Younger; daughters, Linda Carlton of Gastonia, Glenn Younger of Vicenza, Italy, and Carol Tate and husband, Tom, of Charlotte; son, Kenneth Glenn Younger, III and wife, Kathleen, of Boone, N.C.; eight grandchildren; a brother, Dr. Charles J. Younger and wife, Lynn, of Tampa, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services were conducted Friday morning at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church of Gastonia, with Dr. Bill Medlin and Bishop Thomas Stockton officiating.

Ithel “Neal” Hampton

Mr. Ithel “Neal” Hampton, 77, of Hurst, Texas, a native and former resident of Watauga County, died Dec. 14, 2005, in Texas.

He was born April 7, 1928, in Boone, to the late Oscar Hampton and Ines Day Hampton.

Mr. Hampton was a graduate of Appalachian High School and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. After completing his tour of duty, he moved to Texas. He was one of the founders of Specialty Packaging in Fort Worth, retiring after 44 years of service. He was a dedicated member of North Richland Hills Baptist Church, where he was active in Sunday school and served as an usher and greeter.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Mac Knight Hampton; five step-children, seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his father and mother, he was preceded in death by one sister, Mrs. Lavonne Weaver; and three brothers, Carl Hampton, Murray Hampton and Cecil Hampton.

Services were conducted Dec. 16 at 2 p.m. at North Richland Hills Baptist Church, officiated by Dr. Tommy Teague. Burial followed in Bluebonnet Memorial Gardens in Colleyville, Texas.

Theresa Robins “Robbie” Stone

Mrs. Theresa Robins “Robbie” Stone, 87, of Springfield Place, Newberry, S.C., widow of E. Maxcy Stone, died Saturday, Dec. 24, 2005.

She was born July 25, 1918 in Nauvoo, Ala., a daughter of the late J. Mann and Maggie Nix Robins.

Mrs. Stone was an Army Nurse Corp. veteran of World War II having seven years of service and attaining the rank of Captain. She was a nurse with the 91st Evacuation Hospital and landed at Normandy three days after the 1944 D-Day invasion. She was presented the French Jubilee of Liberty Commemorative Medal. She was a homemaker and a member of the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Karen Stone and David L. Robertson of Blowing Rock, N.C.; a son and daughter-in-law, Danny and Jenny Stone of Pomaria, S.C.; one sister, Ruby Hill of Nauvoo, Ala.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Robins Stone Nazarovitch; and a brother, Ira Robins.

Services were conducted Tuesday morning at 10:30 a.m. at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer by the Rev. Steven Counts. Interment followed in Rosemont Cemetery in Newberry.

The family received friends Monday afternoon from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Whitaker Funeral Home.

Active pallbearers were Patrick Robertson, Brent Robertson, Ben Stone, Kevin Cappelman, Eric Martin and George Nazarovitch.

Memorials may be made to the Growing in Grace Fund at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, P.O. Box 382, Newberry, S.C. 29108.

Odell Alonzo Canter

Mr. Odell Alonzo Canter, 79, of Overlook Drive, Lenoir, a native and former resident of Watauga County, died Friday, Dec. 23, 2005, at his home.

He was born June 6, 1926, to the late Frank Canter and Lillie Icenhour Canter.

Mr. Canter was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was retired from Broyhill Furniture in Lenoir.

Survivors include three daughters, Darlene Clark and husband, Rick, of Lenoir; Donna McCall and husband, Tommy, and Sandra Canter, all of Hudson; two sons, Alan Canter and Douglas Canter, both of Lenoir; two brothers, Harvey Canter of Boone and Gurney Canter of Banner Elk; two sisters, Dorothy Miller of Hickory and Viola Coffey of Yadkinville. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his father and mother, he was preceded in death by six brothers and two sisters.

Services were conducted this afternoon (Monday) at 2 p.m. at Mackie-High Funeral Home Chapel in Granite Falls, officiated by the Rev. Bruce Miller. Burial followed in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Granite Falls.

Dora Lee Perry Dancy

Mrs. Dora Lee Perry Dancy, 86, of 1401 Tater Hill Road, Zionville, wife of the late Stanley “Dock” Dancy, died Friday night, Dec. 23, 2005, at Britthaven in Wilkesboro.

She was born Nov. 9, 1919, in the Shull’s Mills community of Watauga County, to the late Roscoe Perry and Ella Fletcher Perry.

Mrs. Dancy was a retired inspector from the former Shadowline, Inc. and a homemaker. She was a member of Howard’s Creek Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Lois Norris and husband, Gene, of Boone and Judy Lane Dancy of Zionville; two sons. J.B. Dancy and wife, Diane, of Boone and Gary Dancy and wife, Brenda, of Zionville; one granddaughter, Dr. Crystal Holmes and husband, Dr. Kelly Holmes, of Clemmons; three grandsons, Stanley Dancy and wife, Marsha, of Deep Gap; Barry Aldridge of Fleetwood; and David Aldridge and wife, Brandy, of Boone; a granddaughter-in-law, Michelle Aldridge of Charlottesville, Va.; two great-grandsons, Brett Aldridge of Boone and Andrew Holmes of Clemmons; six great-granddaughters, Holly Aldridge, Riley Aldridge, Payton Aldridge, Bailey Aldridge, Reagan Aldridge and Josie Dancy; three sisters, Mrs. Vera Isenhour of Zionville; Mrs. Ethel Bumgarner of Lynchburg, Va. and Mrs. Ruby Cooper of Durango, Colo.; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Carleen Perry of Vilas and Mrs. Ernestine Perry of New Castle, Ind. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and father and mother, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Anna Bell Hughes; and four brothers, Robert Perry, Arvil Perry, Butler Perry and Homer Perry.

Services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state from 12:30-2 p.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Harold Bennett and the Rev. Zane Tester. Burial will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens.

The family will receive friends Tuesday afternoon from 12:30-2 p.m. at the funeral home, prior to the service. At other times, friends may call at the respective homes of the children.

The family has respectfully requested no food. Flowers are appreciated or memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Western North Carolina Chapter, 3 Louisiana Avenue, Asheville, N.C. 28806-3419.

Glenn Moretz

Mr. Victor Glenn Moretz, 95, of 381 Hayes Wellborn Road, Deep Gap, died Saturday morning, Dec. 24, 2005, at Watauga Medical Center.

He was born Jan. 15, 1910, in Todd, Watauga County, to the late Christian Lee Moretz and Alice Davis Moretz.

Mr. Moretz retired from the N.C. Department of Transportation Bridge Department and was a member of Stony Fork Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Alan Nichols and wife, Gaynell, and Al Nichols and wife, Theresa, and one daughter, Alesia Wood and husband, John, all of Deep Gap; three granddaughters, Vanessa Nichols and Jessica Wood, both of Deep Gap and Valerie Nichols Smith of Hoheneels, Germany; one step-grandson, Jay Burchette of Elkin; one great-grandson, Coy Nichols, and one great-granddaughter, Hadlie Nichols, both of Deep Gap. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his father and mother, he was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine Welch Moretz; his first wife, Elizabeth Johnson Moretz, and a number of brothers and sisters.

Graveside services were conducted this morning (Monday) at 11 a.m. at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens, officiated by the Rev. Vernon Eller.

Ted Murl Walker

Mr. Ted Murl Walker, 79, of Newport News, Va., died Dec. 23, 2005.

Mr. Walker was born in Erwin, Tenn. and was a graduate of Unicoi High School. He was a Navy veteran and served his country during World War II. He was the son of the late Herschel Robert Walker and Georgie Gouge Walker of Erwin, Tenn.

He was a retired electrical designer, having worked at the Newport News and Tampa Shipyards. He was a member of Liberty Baptist Church in Hampton, Va., and had previously been an active member of Deer Park and Stevens Memorial Churches in Newport News and West Shore Baptist Church in Tampa.

Survivors include two daughters, Pamela Walker Blume and husband, Allan, of Boone; Patti Walker of Newport News; one son, Kevin Walker and wife, Teresa, of Gloucester, Va.; one sister, Marjorie Walker Eledge and husband, Ashley, of Austin, Tex.; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Paul P. Keller and wife, Mildred, June Bright and her husband, E.B. (Herb) Bright, Harry W. Keller and wife, Jackie, all of Newport News, and Douglas Keller and wife, Sandra, of Virginia Beach. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Jeremy Blume and fiancee, Nicole Carpenter, of Atlanta; Jonathan, Matthew, Ian and Sara Walker, all of Gloucester, Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Keller Walker; and his twin brother, Fred Burl Walker.

Services will be conducted Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. at Liberty Baptist Church in Hampton, Va., officiated by Mr. Walker’s son-in-law, Rev. Allan Blume, followed by a graveside service in Peninsula Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home, 11144 Warwick Boulevard, Newport News, Va.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Intercessory Prayer Ministry of Mount Vernon Baptist Church, 3505 Bamboo Road, Boone, N.C. 28607; or the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering of the International Mission Board, P.O. Box 6767, Richmond, Va. 23230-0767.
