Cloyd Shula Aldridge

Mr. Cloyd Shula Aldridge, 90, of N.C. Highway 105 South, Banner Elk, the Foscoe community, died Monday evening, Dec. 19, 2005 at the Watauga Medical Center.

He was born March 3, 1915 in Watauga County, a son of Linville and Julie McLean.

Mr. Aldridge was a member of the Foscoe Christian Church.  He was a co-owner and operator of the Aldridge Texaco Service Station in Foscoe and was an avid golfer. 

Survivors include his wife, Iris Norwood Aldridge; two daughters, Kay Yates and husband, David, of Banner Elk and Shelia Marshburn and husband, Dennis, of Foscoe; one brother, Jim Aldridge and wife, Claudia, of Foscoe; three sisters, Snow Hopper, Mina Jo Storie and husband, Stanley, and Bernell Meredith and husband, Keith, all of Foscoe; one grandson, Kelly Hodges and wife, Karen; and three great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Adam and Aiden Hodges, all of Foscoe.

He was preceded in death by his son, Eddie Aldridge; four brothers, Frank, Clus, Shona and Garner Aldridge; and two sisters, Eva Aldridge and Mamie Ethel Shook.

Services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Foscoe Christian Church, officiated by pastors Lance Hostetter and Ken Caswell. The family received friends Wednesday afternoon from 1-2 p.m., one hour prior to services, at the church.  Burial followed in the Foscoe Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Foscoe Christian Church Building Fund, 8384 N.C. Highway 105 South, Boone, N.C. 28607.

Roy F. Ashley

Mr. Roy Francis Ashley, 79, of Lenoir, N.C., a native and former resident of Watauga County, died Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2005 at his residence.

He was born Sept. 10, 1926 in Boone, to the late Roger Ashley and Edna Shore Ashley Moxley.

Mr. Ashley was a retired machine operator for Thomasville Furniture, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of Unity Baptist  Church in Lenoir.

Survivors include his wife, Lura Mae Jones Ashley; three sons, Gary Ashley, Bobby Ashley and wife, Debra, and Ronnie Ashley and wife, Kathy, all of Lenoir; two daughters, Ramona Kanupp and husband, Roy, and Tamara Foxx and husband, Chuck, all of Lenoir; two brothers, George Ashley and wife, Janice, of  Mountain City, Tenn. and C.V. Ashley of Blowing Rock; four sisters, Virginia James of High Point, N.C., Mary Charlotte McGuire and husband, Ernest, and Patsy McGuire and husband, Dennard, all of Boone, and Lola Horch and husband, Mike, of St. Loyis, Missouri. He is also survived by  11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

 In addition to his father and mother, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Junie Trivette Ashley; and a brother, Dale Ashley.  

Services were conducted this morning (Friday) at 11 a.m. at Pendry’s Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Paul Dula officiating. Burial followed at Blue Ridge Memorial Park in Lenoir.

Hilda Marie Campbell Hensley

Mrs. Hilda Marie Campbell Hensley, 79, of Granite Falls, died Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2005, at Camelot Manor in Granite Falls.

She was born March 13, 1926, in Caldwell County, to the late John and Sally Benfield Campbell.

Mrs. Hensley was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include six sons, Lentz Lyda, J.D. Lyda and Ricky Lyda, all of Granite Falls; Randy Garland of Chapel Hill; Robert Foster of Damascus, Va. and Josh Triplett of Greeneville, Tenn.; four daughters, Rita Miller, Sharon Winebarger and Lisa Triplett, all of Boone, and Tammy Bryant, all of Lenoir. She is also survived by 20 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and a number of step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

In addition to her father and mother, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Janice Martin; her husband, Donald Hensley and a number of sisters and brothers.

Services were conducted Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Bass-Smith Granite Funeral Service Chapel in Granite Falls, officiated by the Rev. David Woods and the Rev. Van Proffitt. Burial followed in the Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Granite Falls.

Bass-Smith Granite Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.

Zane G. Main Sr.

Mr. Zane G. Main, Sr., 65, of 1017-C Perkins Place, Lenoir, died Monday, Dec. 19, 2005, at his home.

He was born Dec. 30, 1939, in Watauga County, to the late Ira Hamilton Main and Loy Harmon Main.

Mr. Main was a retired self-employed carpenter and a member of New Hope Christian Community Church in Lenoir. He was a lifelong musician.

Survivors include his wife, Geneva “Jan” Woodruff Main; two daughters, Robin Dula and husband, Mike, and Jan Bryant, all of Lenoir; five sons, Dino Main of Elmsford, N.Y.; Gino Main and wife, Tammy, of Lenoir; Zane “Z.G.” Main, Jr. and wife, Angie, of Bluefield, West Virginia; Michael Main and wife, Lisa, of Gamewell and Rev. Lance Main and wife, Helen, of Granite Falls; two brothers, Hurley Main and wife, Mary, and Boyd Main and wife, Kathleen, all of Gamewell; and two sisters, Vonnie Moody and husband, Cline, of Boone and Geneva York and husband, Roy, of Morganton. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his father and mother, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Flora Phillips; and four brothers, Ira H. Main, Jr., Kit Main, Herbert Main and Earl Main.

Services were conducted Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. at New Hope Christian Community Church, officiated by the Rev. Jerry Tester. Burial followed in the Blue Ridge Memorial Park in Lenoir.

Dr. A. Hugh Altvater

Dr. A. Hugh Altvater, 83, of Sharon Towers, Charlotte, died Thursday, Dec. 1, 2005.

He was born in Winfield, Kansas on Nov. 6, 1922 and was the son of the late Henry Hugh Altvater and Amelia Caroline Miller Altvater.

Dr. Altvater received his Master of Fine Arts Degree from Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina, now UNC Greensboro, and his Doctor of Pathology Degree from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine where he also served his residency and specialized in Pathology. An accomplished violinist, Dr. Altvater lived in Boone for 28 years and practiced pathology at Watauga Medical Center.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Mary J. Altvater; one son, William M. Altvater and wife, Gina, of Nashville, Tenn.; one daughter, Mary Glenn A. Granger and husband, Will, of Charlotte; and his grandchildren, Bryson and Siena Altvater, Caroline Granger and Juliett G. Maher.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, H. Mark Altvater.

A memorial service was conducted Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church with Pastor Tim Smith officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 6000 Fairview Road, Charlotte, N.C. 28210 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

 

Edward Cutillo

Mr. Edward Cutillo, 33, of Blowing Rock, died Thursday, Dec. 15, 2005 in Lancaster, Pa. 

He was born in Ridgewood, New Jersey, the son of Edward R. and Denise Falborn Cutillo.  He was married to Courtney Moss Aril 24, 1999. 

Mr. Cutillo served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division and participated in both Desert Storm and Desert Shield.  He was a graduate of Appalachian State University with a BA in Communications and Advertising. 

He is survived by his wife, Courtney Moss Cutillo; one daughter, Isabella Ree Cutillo; one son, Nickolas Edward Cutillo, all of Blowing Rock; his parents, Edward R. and Denise Falborn Cutillo of Lancaster, Pa.; one sister, Jennifer Cutillo of Illinois; his maternal grandparents, James and Jean Falborn; and his paternal grandmother, Margaret Cutillo.

Funeral services for Mr. Edward Cutillo will be conducted Thursday morning at 11 o’clock at St. Mary’s of the Hills Episcopal Church in Blowing Rock.  Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cutillo Family Fund, c/o Branch Banking & Trust (BB&T), 971 Blowing Rock Road, Boone, N.C. 28607.

The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 5 until 7 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.

Ivan Greene Dishman

Mr. Ivan Greene Dishman, 84, of Peoria Road, died Wednesday evening, Dec. 14, 2005 at Watauga Medical Center. 

He was born in Watauga County, August 17, 1921, a son of the late Willard and Janie Greene Dishman. 

Mr. Dishman was a longtime employee of TRW, an Army veteran of World War II, and a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Brenda Eggers and husband, Michael, of Mountain City, Tenn.; three sons, Bill Dishman and wife, Carol, of Sugar Grove, Jerry Dishman and wife, Donna, of Cary, and Ralph Dishman and wife, Billie Jo, of Todd; 11 grandchildren, Ivan Dishman and wife, Jesse; Carter Dishman and wife, Beth; and Kasi Dishman, all of Sugar Grove; Avery, Tyson and Emily Dishman, all of Cary; Morgan, Marly and Carlyn Eggers, all of Mountain City, Tenn.; Jamie Dishman and Matthew Blake, both of Todd; two great-grandchildren, Ida and Anna Dishman of Sugar Grove; two brothers, Lloyd Dishman and wife, Ruby, of Boone, and Buster Dishman and wife, Minnie Dare, of Vilas; three sisters, Leta Mae Edmisten of Sugar Grove, Mabel Ward of Boone, and Maude Ward and husband, Lee, of Granite Falls; and a number of nieces and nephews. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Nannie Grace Tester Dishman; and one son, Brian Dishman. 

Services were conducted Saturday afternoon at 1 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by the Rev. James D. Hagaman. Burial followed in the Greene cemetery.  The family received friends Saturday morning from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service. 

Memorials may be made to the Greene Cemetery Fund, 2384 Peoria Road, Sugar Grove, N.C. 28679.

William F. “Bill” Downs

Mr. William F. “Bill” Downs, 84, of 1800 Powder Horn Mtn. Road, Deep Gap, died Friday, Dec. 16, 2005, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

He was born Feb. 15, 1921, in Parkersburg, West Virginia, to the late Francis Murl and Rebecca Gladys Board Downs.

Mr. Downs was a graduate of Parkersburg High School and received a degree in Journalism from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. He earned the rank of Lieutenant while serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a PBY pilot in anti-submarine warfare in the Atlantic and Pacific.

He was founder and Chairman of the Board of The Downs Group in Charlotte until its closing in 1993. Mr. Downs was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Charlotte and Campbell Memorial Chapel in Deep Gap and Mt. Olivet Masonic Lodge in Parkersburg, West. Va. He was a former member of the Advertising Club of Charlotte, former president of ICITA (worldwide network of advertising agencies) and a former member of Olde Providence Racquet Club, Cedarwood Country Club and Charlotte Athletic and Tower Clubs.

His vocation included the West Virginia Industrial and Publicity Commission (now Department of Commerce), director of public relations for The Greenbrier Hotel in White Sulphur Springs, Va.; assistant advertising director of C & O Railway in Cleveland, Ohio; VP/account executive with Houck & Company Advertising in Roanoke, Va.; VP/account executive with Cargill, Wilson & Acree in Charlotte and VP of McConnell-Downs Advertising agency in Charlotte. His hobbies included golf, tennis, miniature railroading, gardening, reading, writing and woodworking.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly Boyers Downs; and one son, Kevin William Downs of Boone.

In addition to his father and mother, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Kimberley Downs Stewman.

Services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. at Campbell Memorial Chapel at Powder Horn Mountain, with the Rev. Bill Rogers officiating. Burial will follow in Campbell Memorial Chapel Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at a reception at the Power Horn Mtn. Clubhouse following the service.

Mildred Mast Farthing

Mrs. Mildred Mast Farthing, 88, of 5012 Highway 421 North, Vilas, wife of the late Ray Farthing, died Thursday morning, Dec. 15, 2005, at Watauga Medical Center.

She was born Dec. 20, 1916, in Sugar Grove, Watauga County, to the late Arthur Clyde and Jennie Bingham Mast.

Mrs. Farthing was a graduate of Cove Creek High School and attended a 1-year business college. She and her late husband owned and operated the former M&R Furniture & Appliance Store in Vilas. She was a member of Cove Creek Baptist Church where she formerly served as secretary and was active in many church activities. She loved songbirds and was an avid golfer.

Survivors include one sister, Carleen Mast Edmisten Danner and husband, Jack, of Vero Beach, Fla.; and her step-mother, Mrs. Gladys M. Mast of Vilas. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews and special friends.

In addition to her husband and father and mother, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Edward Mast, Arthur Dean Mast and Frank Mast; and two sisters, Mrs. Joann Greer and Mrs. Geneva Reece.

Services were conducted Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Cove Creep Baptist Church with Pastor Tony Duck officiating. Burial followed in the Mast-Taylor Cemetery in Valle Crucis.

Dennis Lee Love

Mr. Dennis Lee Love, 58, of 673 Hattie Hill Road, Vilas, died Thursday evening, Dec. 15, 2005, at Watauga Medical Center.

He was born Sept. 21, 1947, in Boone, Watauga County, to the late Lee Vance Love and Lenora Millsaps Love.

Mr. Love was a maintenance mechanic at Boone Golf Club and a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Jo Reese Love; a brother-in-law, Bill Reese and wife, Pat, of Vilas; a sister-in-law, Peggy Presnell and husband, Amos, of Sparta; one niece, Kathy Jo Carroll and husband, Keith; one nephew, Tyler Reese; one great-niece, Serena Carroll and an adopted niece, Michelle Henson, all of Vilas; and one uncle, Charles Jordan of Cullman, Ala. He is also survived by a number of cousins.

Services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. Quincy Norris and the Rev. Eric Cornett. Burial followed in the Bethel Cemetery.

James Ellis Roberts

 Mr. Jim Roberts, 79, of Charlotte passed away Friday, Dec. 16, 2005 at Southminster Retirement Community in Charlotte. 

He was born on May 4, 1926 in Junction City, Kansas to Forest Adair Roberts and Etta Polland Stevens. 

Mr. Roberts graduated from the University of Kansas where he studied Personnel and Labor Law and was a member of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity.  Jim served in the United States Navy in the South Pacific during World War II.  He married Charlene Farrell from Sterling, Kansas on Nov. 25, 1950.

He was an active church member and served as an usher, lector and Eucharistic Minister.  He was a very civic minded individual and served his community in Rotary International and SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives).  Mr. Roberts made a difference in the lives of the “at risk” students he tutored in the Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools.

Mr. Roberts worked with several companies over the span of his professional career.  In 1962, he left Lincoln National Life Insurance Company to open Hickory Farms in the Park Road Shopping Center.  He and his beloved wife Charlene owned and operated this store for over twenty years.  Upon his retirement in 1983, he served as a consultant to specialty food companies.

Survivors include daughters, Mary Sansbury and her husband, Woody, of Matthews; Sally Geis and her husband, Rick, of Boone; son, Jim Roberts and his wife, Cindy, of Waxhaw; six wonderful grandsons, Ben and Griff Sansbury of Matthews, Christopher, Jonathan and Nicholas Geis of Boone, and Josh Roberts of Fort Mill, S.C.; sister, Polly A. Lowe and her husband, Wayne, of Hutchinson, Kansas.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Charlene.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of James Ellis Roberts will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20, 2005 at Holy Comforter Episcopal Church, 2701 Park Rd., Charlotte with the Reverend Dr. Carter Loftin, and the Reverend Fred Paschall officiating.  The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region, 1420 East Seventh St., Charlotte, NC 28204.

Beulah Aldridge Triplett

 Ms. Beulah Aldridge Triplett, 56, of Lenoir, a native and former resident of Watauga County, died Thursday, Dec. 15, 2005, at Gateway Nursing Center in Lenoir, after a 20-year illness with Multiple Sclerosis.

She was born April 21, 1949, in Foscoe, to the late Ray and Flora Fox Aldridge.

Ms. Triplett attended Valle Crucis Elementary School and Cove Creek High School and was a former member of Watauga Baptist Church. She was a former kindergarten aide in the Caldwell County Schools and retired as assistant manager from Hardees in Lenoir in 1984. She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Hudson, where she was faithfully cared for by her church family.

Survivors include two daughters, Denise Sexton and husband, Hal, of Thonotosassa, Fla. and Tammy Woodie and husband, Dwight, of Newland; one son, Patrick Triplett and wife, Michelle, of Lenoir; five grandchildren, Emily and Melanie Sexton, Benjamin Woodie and Meredith and Zachary Triplett; one sister, Julia Jaynes and husband, Albert, of Newland; and one brother, Ronnie Aldridge and wife, Patricia, of Foscoe. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her father and mother, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Steve Aldridge and Roger Aldridge; and a sister, Jacquelyn Aldridge.

Services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. at Mount Zion Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Hal Sexton, the Rev. John Green and the Rev. Randy McCall. Burial followed in Blue Ridge Memorial Park in Lenoir.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mount Zion Baptist Church, 1787 Cajah Mountain Road, Hudson, N.C. 28638.

Azalee Greer Wilson

Mrs. Azalee Greer Wilson, 74, of 2874 Silverstone Road, Zionville, wife of the late Lawrence Wilson, died Friday, Dec. 16, 2005, at home.

She was born Feb. 13, 1931, in Cove Creek, Watauga County, to the late Clayton and Pearl Greene Greer.

Mrs. Wilson was a graduate of Glen Alpine High School and was a homemaker. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Zionville.

Survivors include three sons, Johnny Wilson and wife, Wanda, and Jimmy Wilson and wife, Tammy, all of Zionville and Ricky Wilson and wife, Denise, of North Wilkesboro; one stepson, David Wilson of Thomasville; two sisters, Mrs. Mildred Perkins and JoAnn Herron and husband, Dale, all of Morganton; and one brother, Ronnie Greer and wife, Judy, of Valdese. She is also survived by five grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services were conducted Saturday morning at 11 a.m. at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Daniel Little. Burial followed in the Pleasant Grove Church Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Watauga County, 136 Furman Road, Boone, N.C. 28607.

Hazel Belle Robinson Wilson

Mrs. Hazel Belle Robinson Wilson, 88, of Beaver Dam Road, Vilas, N.C., died Friday evening, Dec. 16, 2005 at her home. 

She was born August 30, 1917 in Watauga County,  a daughter of George and Drilla Wilson Robinson.  

Mrs. Wilson was a member of the Beaver Dam Baptist Church.  She was a homemaker and was retired from Appalachian State University Food Services Department.

Survivors include her husband, Joseph M. Wilson; one daughter, Jo Ann Scott and husband, Elmar, of Kingsport, Tenn.; one son, Robert Wilson, of Vilas; three sisters, Grace Eggers of Vilas,  Helen Jean Senters of Morganton, and Georgia Lewis of Asheville; one brother, Edward Robinson and wife, Ruth, of Charlotte; four granddaughters: Theresa Khybeh and husband, Ayiam, of Greenville; Lesia Scott of Chattanooga, Tenn., Bobbie Jo Wilson and Diane Wilson, both of Vilas; three great-grandchildren; and by a special friend and caregiver, Michelle Henson.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Allen Wilson; two sisters, Chloe Hathcock and Barbara Ann Wallace; and two brothers, Kent and Blaine Robinson.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2:00 o’clock at Beaver Dam Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. Carl Wilson and the Rev. Carl Johnson. Burial will follow in the Lower Beaver Dam Cemetery.
