Toys  o' plenty

Gene Swift is surrounded by shelves of toys at Santa’s Toy Box. Swift, co-chairman of the annual effort, said between 700 to 800 needy children will receive toys and books from the project — now in its 19th year. New, unwrapped toys may be dropped off at the following locations: First Citizens Bank, Southern States Subaru, Watauga Opportunities, Ross Chrysler Plymouth, Minor’s Printing, Watauga County Library, Boone Police Department and Charter Communications through Dec. 14. OK, Furman, you’re next

Appalachian State quarterback Richie Williams drives for a few of the 403 yards of total offense he accumulated Saturday as the Mountaineers stifled the Southern Illinois Salukis in a 38-24 win in the quarter-finals of the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs on Saturday afternoon. The Mountaineers advance to the semi-finals and will face conference rival Furman at Kidd-Brewer Stadium on Saturday at high noon.
