Record-breaking Black Saturday

A record-breaking crowd watched ASU's 35-7 victory Saturday against intra-state rival Western Carolina. The Mountaineers not only won back the rival Old Mountain Jug, but they also earned an automatic bid to the 1-AA playoffs. The crowd of 25,584 set an attendance record by beating the previous record of 25,301 in 1988 when ASU played Furman. Jeff Mendenhall, ASU Class of 1985, had a unique display at his tailgating party on Saturday. He has recreated almost all of the ASU football helmets that have protected the players throughout the years, and sprinkled the display with vintage brochures and information about the team and the university.
