Gladys Moretz Coffey

Mrs. Mary Gladys Moretz Coffey, 90, of 1363 Big Hill Road, Boone, wife of the late H.L. Coffey, died Tuesday night, Oct. 25, 2005, at home.

She was born Sept. 23, 1915, in the Big Hill community of Watauga County, to the late Herbert Cleveland and Pearl Carpenter Moretz.

Mrs. Coffey was a homemaker and made hand-tied canopies for many years, a skill she learned from her mother. She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church and the church altar guild for many years. Mrs. Coffey took great pride in being the older sister to her six younger brothers.

Survivors include one daughter, Mary Ann Coffey of Boone; two sons, Jon Coffey and wife, Aubrey, of Winston-Salem and Leroy Coffey and wife, Angela, of Concord; one granddaughter, Vickie Coffey of Lexington; two grandsons, Michael Coffey and wife, Melissa, of Wilkesboro and Andrew Coffey of Chapel Hill; three brothers, H.C. Moretz, Jr. and wife, Phyllis; Willis Moretz and wife, Pearl, and John W. Moretz and wife, Barbara, all of Boone; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Betty S. Moretz of Boone. She is also survived by seven nieces and 12 nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, George Moretz, Clayton Moretz and Roy Moretz; a step-grandson, Donald Dowell, Sr., and a step-great-grandson, Donald Dowell, Jr.

Services will be conducted Saturday morning at 10 o’clock at Bethany Lutheran Church. The body will lie in state at the church from 9-10 a.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Tom Hehenberger. Burial will follow in the Old Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

The family will receive friends this evening (Friday) from 6:30-8 p.m. at Hampton Funeral Service. At other times, friends may call at the Coffey residence.

Flowers are appreciated or memorial contributions may be made to the Blowing Rock Hospital Adult Day Care, P.O. Box 148, Blowing Rock, N.C. 28605 or to the Bethany Lutheran Church Children’s Ministry, 1030 Big Hill Road, Boone, N.C. 28607.

Kaye Carlton Cranfill

Mrs. Kaye Carlton Cranfill, 62, of 4th St., West Jefferson, N.C., died Monday, Oct. 24, 2005, at Ashe County Memorial Hospital, after a short illness.

Survivors include one son, Nathan Lewis Cranfill of Vilas, N.C.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Burt Carlton and Etta Grey Mayberry Carlton.

A private memorial service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 29.

 

Virginia Combs Dobbs

Mrs. Virginia Combs Dobbs, 88, of 1814 Barnell Avenue, Raleigh, died Monday, Oct. 24, 2005, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Va.

She was born March 8, 1917, in Bryson City, to the late Allie Bryan and Florence Sawyer Combs.

Mrs. Dobbs was a graduate of Broughton High School and Meredith College in Raleigh and received a master’s degree in Library Science from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. She was a retired librarian from the Wake County School System and a member of Hayes Barton Baptist Church in Raleigh. She was a member of the D.A.R., a champion bridge player and a lover of books and history.

Survivors include her husband, Oscar Thomas “Tommy” Dobbs; two daughters, Vicki Dalia and husband, Joedy, of Whitetop, Va. and Lianne Mattar and husband, Ric, of Blowing Rock; one son, John Dobbs of Greensboro; and two step-sons, Tommy Dobbs and wife, Diane, of California and Charles Dobbs and wife of Mobile, Ala.; one sister, Louise Wall and husband, Harold, of Raleigh; and one brother, Edwin Combs and wife, Julia, of Hampstead. She is also survived by 27 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Stephen Bryan Dobbs; and a brother, Bryan Combs.

Services were conducted this morning (Friday) at 10 a.m. at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Dr. Wayne Brown. Burial followed in Woodlawn Cemetery in Blowing Rock.

A memorial service will be held in Raleigh at a time and place to be announced later.

Memorial contributions may be made to a library of the donor’s choice or a book may be given to Appalachian Brian Estates in Boone in her memory.

Loye Hicks Hodges

Mrs. Loye Hicks Hodges, 87, of Keystone Drive, Boone, died Monday afternoon, Oct. 24, 2005, in Wisconsin, after a brief illness.

She was born Feb. 28, 1918, in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Charles Walter and Emma Mae Mast Hicks.

Mrs. Hodges was married to the late Grady Marion Hodges for 46 years. She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Boone, and was a former member of Calvary Baptist Church in Hickory, having lived in Hickory for over 40 years. Besides being a homemaker, during World War II she worked in Detroit, Mich. for the Ford Motor Company as “Rosie the Riveter”.

Survivors include one daughter, Kay Hodges Foret and husband, Michael, of Stevens Point, Wisc.; one son, Harland Hodges of Charleston, S.C.; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant sister.

Graveside services and burial were conducted Thursday afternoon at 12:30 at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens, with the Rev. Bert Dickson and Dr. Ken Craig officiating.

Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, P.O. Box 1485, Hickory, N.C. 28603.

Mary Elizabeth Parsons

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Parsons, 84, of Pleasant Hill Road, Lenoir, died  Tuesday, October 25, 2005 at Palliative Care Center and Hospice of Catawba Valley. 

She was born January 13, 1921 in  Caldwell  County to the late Lucious Haywood Summerow and Martha Elizabeth Cardwell Summerow.

 Mrs. Parsons was a homemaker and a member of Crossroads Baptist Church.

 She is survived by two daughters, Billie Perry and husband Paul of Boone and Elizabeth “Betty” Sweeney and husband Gaither of Greenville, S.C.; a brother, Gene Summerow and wife Shelby of Lenoir; and two sisters, Hazel Freeman and husband Johnny and Peggy Craig and husband Bruce, all of Lenoir.   She is also survived by two grandchildren and three step-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and 8 step-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thad Presler Parsons; a sister, Ruby Whittington; brothers, Bill, Roy, and Ward Summerow.

Services will be conducted Friday afternoon  at 3:00 p.m. at Pendry’s Chapel with the Reverend Paul Helton and Reverend Kevin Broyhill officiating.  Burial will follow at  Blue Ridge  Memorial Park.

Dillon Andrew Price

Mr. Dillon Andrew Price, 18, of Silverstone Road, Zionville, died Tuesday morning, Oct. 25, 2005.

He was born in Watauga County, Nov. 17, 1986, a son of Marie Lewis Price and Jeff Price.

Dillon was a member of Westside Baptist Church and attended Shulls Mill Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Watauga High School, worked at Wendy’s restaurant, and was a member of the North Carolina National Guard.

Survivors include his mother, Marie Lewis Price of Zionville; his father and step-mother, Jeff and Cindy Price of Trade, Tenn.; one step-brother, Ethan Lipford; three step-sisters, Bell, Beth and Katie Lipford, all of Trade, Tenn.; his maternal grandparents, Isaac and Virginia Lewis of Zionville; and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Andy and Madge Price.

Services were conducted Thursday evening at 8 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Tim Coffey. The family received friends Thursday evening from 6:30-8 p.m. at the funeral home, prior to the service.

Graveside services and burial were conducted Friday morning at 11 o’clock, at the Wilson Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Gene Price, Charles Lewis, Donnie Lewis, Cody Bryant, Randy Jennings, and Ethan Lipford.

Memorials may be made to the Shulls Mill Baptist Church, 283 Shulls Mill Road, Boone, N.C. 28607.

Martha Jeanne Henson Richardson

Mrs. Martha Jeanne Henson Richardson, 72, of Whitman Drive, Winston-Salem, died Wednesday morning, Oct. 26, 2005, at Oak Summit Nursing Center in Winston-Salem.

She was born Nov. 25, 1932 in Watauga County. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem.

Mrs. Richardson was a Director of Christian Education and taught English at the University and Community College level. She received her Associate Degree from Pfeiffer College in Misenheimer, her Bachelors of Arts Degree from High Point College, her Masters of Christian Education from Emory University in Atlanta, Ga., and her Masters of Arts/English Degree from Fayetteville State University. Mrs. Richardson served as the United Methodist Church Director of Christian Education in Newton and Fayetteville, N.C., Columbus, Ohio and Panama City, Fla.

Survivors include her husband, William Martin Richardson; three sons, William Martin Richardson, Jr. and wife, Angela, Charles Samuel Richardson and John Edward Richardson, all of Winston-Salem; her mother, Thelma R. Henson; and two brothers, Edwin Gayle and Joseph Glenn Henson, all of Vilas.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Marta Elise Richardson; her father, Ford Henson; and a brother, Charles Dean Henson.

Services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Henson Chapel United Methodist Church in Cove Creek, officiated by the Rev. Jack Yarbrough. The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon from 1-2 p.m., one hour prior to services, at the church. Burial will follow in the Henson Chapel Cemetery.

Leslie Ivan “Les” Campbell

Mr. Leslie Ivan “Les” Campbell, 83, of Jacksonville, Fla., formerly of Minto, North Dakota, died Oct. 13, 2005, at Shands Hospital of Jacksonville, Fla.

He was born in Walsh County, North Dakota, on June 1, 1922, to Bert and Blanche Campbell.

Mr. Campbell attended elementary school in Oakwood, North Dakota, and then spent his formative years living on a farm near Minto, North Dakota and graduated Minto High School in 1939.

He was united in marriage to Bernadette Kerian of Grand Forks, North Dakota on Sept. 30, 1945. They moved to Minto, North Dakota, from Warren, Minn., in 1957 when they became owners of the Bank of Minto. Mr. Campbell was President of the bank from 1957-1968. During those 12 years, he and his wife, and their nine children became an integral part of the Minto community. The family then relocated to Melbourne, Fla. in 1958 where he worked as Vice President for a local bank. The Campbell’s subsequently lived in Boone, N.C. for 23 years (1970-1993), where seven of their children graduated from Watauga High School and many of them also attended and graduated from Appalachian State University.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Bernadette Kerian Campbell; his brother, Marvin Campbell and wife, Mary Lou, of Brainerd, Minn.; and sisters, Agnes  Stan of Grand Forks, North Dakota, and Shirley Schrom and husband, Arch, of St. Cloud, Minn.; his nine children, Randy Campbell of Isle, Minn., Mike Campbell and wife, Mary, of Niceville, Fla., Mary Berger and husband, Dr. Alan Berger, of Jacksonville, Fla., Leslie Campbell and Roger Shepherd, of Tallahassee, Fla., Renee Healy and husband, John, of Charlotte, N.C., Kerianne Schuster and husband, Wayne, of Flowery Branch, Ga., Phillip Campbell, and wife, Amy, of Raleigh, N.C., Mark Campbell and wife, Beth, of Mocksville, N.C., Todd Campbell and wife, Laurie, of Atlanta, Ga. Mr. Campbell was the proud grandfather of 17 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bert and Blanche Campbell; his brothers, Shanley, Leonard, and Wilmar; and his sister, Bernice Schanilec.

A memorial service was held Oct. 17, at Hardage Giddens Funeral Home in Jacksonville, Fla., at 2 p.m.

Mr. Campbell served in World War II and as a disabled World War II veteran, the family plans for internment of his ashes at the Bushnell National Cemetery in Florida, in December 2005.

Mr. Campbell will forever be remembered by those who knew him for his deep and ceaseless family devotion.

Hardage Giddens Funeral Home served the Campbell family.

 

Ted Ross Hawkins

Mr. Ted Ross Hawkins, 48,  of Hickory, N.C., died Oct. 19, 2005, at his residence.

He was born Oct. 28, 1956 in Durham County, N.C., to the Rev. Dr. W. Howard Hawkins and the late Rosalee Houk Hawkins.

Mr. Hawkins served in the U.S. Air Force, was a former board member of the Mountain View Fire Department, president of Mountain View Elementary P.T.O., and he sponsored and coached both his daughter’s softball teams. He was a member of Drexel First Church of God in Drexel, N.C.

Survivors include his wife, Vanessa B. Hawkins; two daughters, Madison Taylor Hawkins and McKenzie Leigh Hawkins, both of the home; one son, Matthew Tyler Hawkins of Cary, N.C.; his mother-in-law, Coleen T. Bush of Wilkesboro, N.C.; his father, Rev. Dr. W. Howard Hawkins of Pulaski, Va.; three brothers, Gerald Hawkins of Hickory, N.C., Earl Hawkins and Phillip Hawkins, both of Lenoir, N.C.; and one sister, Jeanne Smart of Lenoir, N.C.

A Celebration of Life was conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Drexel First Church of God. Burial followed in the Moore Family Cemetery in Blowing Rock, N.C.

In lieu of flowers, a special account has been set up at the State Employee’s Credit Union for Mr. Hawkin’s daughters, Madison and McKenzie. Donations may be sent to: SECU, 1273 16th St., N.E., Hickory, N.C. 28601.

Bass-Smith Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

 

Marlyn Yates Trivette

Mrs. Marlyn Yates Trivette, 82, of Horseshoe Drive, Boone, died Thursday morning, Oct. 20, 2005, at Glenbridge Health and Rehab in Boone.  She was the widow of Raymond Trivette. 

She was born Nov. l7, 1922 in Vilas, a daughter of Edward and Mamie Blanche Matheson Yates.  Mrs. Trivette was retired from TRW in Boone.  She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church.

 Survivors include two sons, Charles Trivette and wife Ester of Loomis, Calif., their son Charles Trivette, Jr. of Boone and their grandson Steven of Cameron Park, Calif.; and Chester Trivette and wife Martha of Boone, their children, Jayna Bryan of Deep Gap and her sons Jared Munday and wife Brooks and Jeremy Munday, all of Boone; Jeffrey and Thomas Keller of Deep Gap, Chuck Trivette and wife Cindy and their sons Clint and Dallas of Boone, and Audra Tester and husband Lane and their daughters, Jessica and Cassandra of Charlotte, Susie and husband Captain Martin Sweet and their children Kyle and Sarah of Honolulu, Hawaii, Daveta Robbins and their son Julian Bingham of Deep Gap;  two sisters, Rose Edna Harmon of Banner Elk and Wilma Shook and husband Stuart of Advance; three brothers, Ralph Yates and wife Evelyn of Boone, Herbert Yates and wife Doris of Banner Elk and Everette Yates and wife Mary of Greencastle, Pa.; and her sister-in-law, Ruby Trivette of Wilkesboro.

Services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Vance Triplett and the Rev. David Bentley.  Burial followed at the Mount Lawn Memorial Parks and Gardens. 

The family received friends Saturday evening at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.

Willis Miller Watts

Mrs. Willis Miller Watts, 89, of Grand Boulevard, Boone, died Friday evening, Oct. 21, 2005, at the Davant Rehab and Extended Care Facility in Blowing Rock.

She was born Jan. 23, 1916, in Patterson, a daughter of Ruben and Eva Miller Watts. 

Mrs. Watts retired as a payroll clerk for the Worth Spinning Company in Stony Point.

Survivors include one son, Steven Millsaps of Boone; two grandchildren, First Lieutenant Sarah Elizabeth Millsaps of Bagdad and Benjamin David Watts Millsaps of Portland, Oregon; her cousin, Bobbi Carson of Greensboro; one niece, Noel Fulcher of Greensboro; a grand nephew, Jay Fulcher of Charlotte; a grand niece, Kim Fulcher Swaim of Pfafftown; and Hugh Watts of Shelby.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Hayden R. Millsaps; and her second husband, Foy C. Watts.

Graveside services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 1 o’clock at the Stony Point Methodist Church Cemetery in Stony Point, N.C.
