Watauga girls win conference meet
MORGANTON — Watauga’s girls’ cross country team came into Wednesday’s Northwestern 4-A Conference championship meet held together with athletic tape and shoe laces, but still held off a charging Freedom team to win the conference title.

Not a second time
For the Watauga boys’ soccer team, payback against A.C. Reynolds was as easy as 1, 2, 3 ... 4? A 4-0 win over the Rockets at Jack Groce Stadium Monday not only avenged their previous 4-1 loss in Asheville, but moved the Pioneers one step closer to the playoffs, now one win away from a berth.

App State to retire Hackett’s number
Last spring, Dexter Coakley became just the second Appalachian State football player to have his number retired. Dino Hackett, who played at Appalachian State from 1982-85, will have his number retired at the Appalachian State-Chattanooga game Oct. 29. Hackett is the third football player to receive the honor. Coakley and running back John Settle are the others.

O-line earns redemption from last year
Appalachian State’s offensive line had a year to remember what happened in Statesboro, Ga., last season. A young group that had three freshman starters took on a Georgia Southern defensive line that had four seniors. Predictably, the Eagles overwhelmed Appalachian State’s young line and helped produce a 54-7 Southern victory.

Will Davis could only take so much of Stuart Scott. So after enduring 18 excruciatingly boring days of sitting in bed watching SportsCenter, Davis returned to his Pioneer brethren last week and could be seen at Friday’s game against A.C. Reynolds cheering for his teammates.

A.C. Reynolds continued its bid for a Northwest 4-A Conference title Friday night as the Rockets defeated Watauga 42-15. Reynolds (6-2, 4-0), led by running back Willie Harper, has almost assured itself a title.

MORGANTON — For the first time in a few years, Watauga’s tennis team was able to get in and out of the Northwestern 4-A Conference tournament relatively quickly. All six Pioneers qualified for the Western Regional after winning their first match.

Pioneers fall twice in home tri-match
Two of the top teams in the state dropped by Lentz-Eggers Gym to play a tri-match with Watauga’s volleyball team Saturday, with Northwest Guilford beating both the Pioneers and Chapel Hill. Chapel Hill beat Watauga in the final match of the day, but took five games to do it.
