Democrat delivery will change

Subscribers will soon get newspaper through the mail

Something new will soon show up in the mailboxes of Watauga Democrat subscribers.

Beginning Oct. 5, the Watauga Democrat will be delivered to all subscribers by the U.S. Postal Service.

The Midweek edition of the Democrat will be delivered on Wednesday; the Weekend edition will be delivered on Friday and the first-of-the-week paper will be put in the racks and dropped at the local post offices that afternoon, which means the first edition of the week will be in the mailbox on Tuesday and in the racks and stores on Monday.

“The rising cost of gasoline and the low unemployment rate in Watauga County has put us in a position to make a decision concerning the delivery of the Watauga Democrat to our subscribers,” publisher Tommy Wilson said.

“We’ve found the local post office offers great service for the large volume of mail we send out every week and we are certain they will offer dependable and prompt service to our subscribers,” Wilson said.

The Democrat will likely be delivered earlier to most customers with home delivery.

“I know, at my home, the mail comes at 11 a.m. and the paper is now delivered between 5-6 p.m.” Wilson said.

Several of the carriers delivering the Democrat have been with the paper for many years but Wilson said that, while most carriers did an excellent job, many routes created distribution problems.

“It is a part-time job for the carriers unless they deliver for other newspapers in the region and there are a limited number of folks in this area in need of part-time positions,” Wilson said.

“That leaves us with very few applicants for carrier positions.”

Some independent carriers will continue to deliver papers to local stores, racks and newspaper boxes.

The Democrat will also be focusing on breaking news through its Web site at www.wataugademocrat.com.

“We will update our coverage immediately as news happens so those who have Internet access will have instant access to the latest Watauga County stories,” editor Jason Reagan said. “We hope readers will check out the site daily to see what’s happening.”

Wilson also announced the Democrat weekly TV listings will be increased to a larger tabloid size at the end of September and that it would be delivered in the Midweek (Wednesday) Democrat for the week starting that following Friday.

Readers with questions about the improvements in delivery can call circulation manager Randy Feimster at 264-3612.
