Mrs. Shirley A. Carter

Mrs. Shirley A. Carter, 74, of 9458 Hwy. 321, Butler, Tenn., died Monday, Aug. 29, 2005, at the Watauga Medical Center.

She was born Aug. 13, 1931 in Cutler, Ind. to the late Bruce Cresse and Lela Baker.

Mrs. Carter was a member of the Elk Mills Christian Church. She was very active in the Friends of the Western Watauga Library and enjoyed painting and gardening.

Survivors include one daughter, Debbie Carter and husband, P.J. Ollis, of Boone; two sons, Dudley Carter and wife, Sandi, of Augusta, Ga. and Dale Carter and wife, Pat, of Clearwater, Fla.; one sister, Betty Hilliard of Melbourne, Fla.; two brothers, Bill Cresse of Hollywood, Fla. and Joe Cresse of Tallahassee, Fla.; seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby D. Carter.

Services were conducted Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. from the Hux-Tetrick Funeral Home Chapel with Mr. Andy Lunceford officiating.

Nova Dean Reece Eller

Ms. Nova Dean Reece Eller, 72, of 4158 Smokey Creek Road, Lenoir, a native and former resident of Watauga County, died Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital.

She was born March 21, 1933, in Zionville, to the late Clifford Archie and Mae Greer Reece.

Ms. Eller was a retired pharmacist’s assistant from Lenoir Drug Company and formerly attended Zionville Baptist Church.

Survivors include a brother, J.D. Reece of Zionville; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Alonzo Reece; and a sister, Mrs. Mabel Hodge.

Graveside services were conducted Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Zionville Baptist Church Cemetery, officiated by the Rev. Carl Johnson.

Laverne P. Heidenfeldt

Mrs. Laverne P. Heidenfeldt, 91, a resident of 600 Fayetteville Rd., died Wednesday morning. 

She was born in Chicago, Illionois, daughter of the late Emil and Minnie Olsen Petersen. 

Surviving is a daughter, Gail H. Lund and husband, Frank, of Boone; a son, Dennis A. Heidenfeldt and wife, Alma, of Mt. Morris, MI; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, August Carl Heidenfeldt; a sister, Alice; and a brother, Henry.

A funeral service will be conducted Sunday morning at 10:00  a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church by Pastor Thomas Colley.

Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 1200 W. Cornwallis Rd., Durham, NC 27705.  Burial will be at Arlington Cemetery in Illinois. 

Clements Funeral Service in Durham is assisting the family.

 

James Willie Laing

Mr. James Willie Laing, 91, of South Road, Todd, died Thursday morning, Sept. 1, 2005 at the Watauga Medical Center.

He was born Feb. 14, 1914 in Tumwater, Wash., a son of Benjamin Franklin and Eliza South Laing.

Mr. Laing was a member of Elk Knob Baptist Church and was a farmer and a school bus driver for the Watauga County School System.

Survivors include two sons, Larry Laing and wife, Josephine, and James Laing, all of Todd; one grandson, Chris Laing and wife, Jessie, and one great-grandson, C.J. Laing, all of Butler, Tenn.; and one sister, Wyoma Blackburn of Jarrettsville, Md. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Daisy Reece Laing; and two sisters, Laura Potter and Margaret Blackburn.

Services will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Elk Knob Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Mike Warren and the Rev. Herbert McCoy. The body will lie in state at the church from 1-2 p.m. Burial will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens.

The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 7-8:30 at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.

Austin & Barnes Funeral Home is serving the Laing family.

 

Myrtle Robbins Setzer

Mrs. Myrtle Marie Robbins Setzer, 81, of 286 Perkinsville Drive, Boone, wife of the late Robert Lee Setzer, died Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2005, at home.

She was born March 14, 1924, in Caldwell County, to the late John Franklin and Arlie Rosetta Bradshaw Robbins.

Mrs. Setzer was a homemaker and a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Karen Setzer Prothero of Boone; two sons, Keith Setzer and wife, Debbie, and Warren Setzer and wife, Mary, all of Creston; two sisters, Mrs. Opal Cox of Lenoir and Mrs. Christine Carswell of Hickory; three brothers, Maynard Robbins and wife, Dot, of Lenoir; Carl Robbins and wife, Cecilia, and John “Jay” Robbins and wife, Donna, all of Jacksonville, Fla. She is also survived by five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Leslie Owen Setzer; a sister, Mrs. Dessie Smith; two brothers, Vilas Robbins and Luther Robbins; and a great-granddaughter, Janie Nicole Seekins.

Services were conducted this morning (Friday) at 11 a.m. at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Herbert McCoy. Burial followed at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens.

R.H. Phillips Jr.

Mr. R.H. Phillips Jr., 68, of 151 Phillips Drive, Deep Gap, died Sunday afternoon, August 28, 2005, at home.

He was born March 4, 1937, in the Meat Camp community of Watauga County, to the late Robert Hill and Martha P. Phillips.

Mr. Phillips served in the U.S. Army, was a former mechanic at Mack Brown, Inc., and was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Rose Weber Phillips; six daughters, June Clemons and husband, Randy, and Ms. Debbie Paugh, all of High Point; Dawn Cornelius and husband, Bill, of Crumpton, Md.; Ms. Tammy Guilford of Boone; Charlotte Hodges and husband, Dennis, of Blowing Rock; and Theresa Myers and husband, Jeff, of Charlotte; two sons, Bruce Phillips and wife, Wanda, of High Point and Bobby Phillips III and wife, Donna, of Zionville; three sisters, Mrs. Opal Norris of Boone, Mrs. Viola Greene and Mrs. Joyce Hamby, both of Deep Gap; two brothers, Howard Phillips and wife, Clara, of Boone and Willard Phillips and wife, Lee, of Baltimore, Md. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Mabel Miller and Mrs. Virgie Bowles; and two brothers, Russell and J.D. Phillips.

Services were conducted Tuesday, August 30, at 2 o’clock at Cornerstone Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. Harvey Presnell and the Rev. Mike Barfoot. Burial followed in the Cornerstone Baptist Church Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Watauga County, 136 Furman Road, Boone, N.C. 28607.

Preacher Clyde Albert Cornett

Preacher Clyde Albert Cornett, 93, of 438 Clyde Cornett Road, Vilas, died Friday night, August 26, 2005, at Life Care Center of Banner Elk.

He was born Jan. 28, 1912, in the Reese community of Watauga County, to the late Charlie and Lillie Pearl Millsaps Cornett.

Rev. Cornett was a retired Baptist minister and a carpenter. He pastored a total of 17 churches during is long ministry, including Cool Springs, Sandy Flat, Timbered Ridge, Beaver Dam, Bethel, Willow Valley, Beech Valley and Watauga Baptist (27 years) in Watauga County; Mount Gilead and Flat Springs (17 years) in Avery County; John’s River and Bailey’s Camp in Caldwell County; Meadow View, Stone Mountain Antioch and Friendship in Tennessee and Robert’s Chapel in Virginia. He was a charter member of Mtn. Dale Baptist Church.

Survivors include six daughters, Opal Hampton and husband, Allen, of Boone; Johnsie Stevens and husband, Wesley, and Grace Ward and husband, Harley, all of Zionville; Julie Icard and husband, Yates, of Connelly Springs; Merle Adams and husband, Kent, of Vilas and Ms. Jodie Cornett of Mountain City, Tenn.; three sons, Clint Cornett and wife, Ruth, and Blaine Cornett and wife, Leta, all of Vilas and Len Cornett and wife, Betty, of Boone; two brothers, Troy Cornett and wife, Bertha, of Elizabethton, Tenn. and Earl Cornett of Bend, Oregon; one sister, Mabel Guy and husband, Ernest, of Mount Airy, Md. He is also survived by 24 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Blanche Phillips Cornett; a grandson, Danny Cornett; two great-granddaughters, Christa Dawn Cornett and Hannah Mae Greer; four sisters, Mrs. Pansy Greene, Mrs. Mamie Waters, Mrs. Lena Mae Harmon and infant Loy May Cornett; and three brothers, Claude Cornett, Roy Cornett and infant Edgar Cornett.

Services were conducted this afternoon (Monday) at 2 p.m. at Mtn. Dale Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Eric Cornett, the Rev. Ray Greene and the Rev. Wynn Greer. Burial followed in the Mtn. Dale Church Cemetery.
