Rosemary Laughran Grady
Mrs. Rosemary Laughran Grady, 89, of Milton Brown Heirs Road, died Wednesday afternoon, August 17, 2005 at Watauga Medical Center.
She was born Oct. 6, 1915 in New York, N.Y., a daughter of the late John and Catherine O'Keefe Laughran.
Mrs. Grady was a former fashion model, and an executive secretary at Emory University Medical School. She was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church.
Survivors include three sons, Dennis Grady and wife, Martha Stephenson of Boone, Thomas Grady and wife, Louise, of Chapel Hill, and Kevin Grady and wife, Mary Beth, of Atlanta, Ga.; one granddaughter, Virginia Purcell of Rowayton, Conn.; five grandsons, Ryan and Conor Grady, both of Boone; Thomas Grady III of New York, and Martin and Donald Grady of Atlanta, Ga.; and two great-granddaughters, Grady and Mason Purcell of Rowayton, Conn.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Francis Grady.
A funeral mass will be conducted Monday morning at 10 o'clock at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Atlanta, Ga. Burial will follow in Atlanta's Floral Hills Memory Gardens.

Dr. Francis Angelo Montaldi
Dr.
Francis Angelo Montaldi, 76, of 428 Wake Robin Lane, Boone, died
Monday afternoon, August 15, 2005, at Blowing Rock Hospital Extended
Care, after a lengthy illness. He was born Sept. 8, 1928, in
Buffalo, New York, to the late Francis Saveria (Frank) and Marie
Antoinette (Nellie J.) Telesco Montaldi. An alumnus of the New
York State Agricultural & Technical School at Alfred (R. Engineering
1948), Manatee Junior College (A.A. 1960), Appalachian State Teachers
College (B.S. 1962; M.A. 1963) and the University of Georgia (Ed.D.
1970), Dr. Montaldi was a professor of Microbiology and Bacteriology
at Appalachian State University from 1970 until his retirement
in 1994, at which time he was awarded the distinction of Faculty
Emeritus. He has been professionally affiliated with the Southeastern
Electron Microscopy Society, the American Society for Microbiology
and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He
was a U.S. Army veteran and a long-standing member of Grace Lutheran
Church in Boone. Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Barbara
Lees Montaldi; three sons, Dr. Daniel Francis Montaldi of Phoenix,
Ariz., Dr. Stephen Howard Montaldi of Hollywood, Fla., and Peter
Angelo Montaldi of Boone; three brothers, Ralph Montaldi of Buffalo,
N.Y., Paul Montaldi of North Collins, N.Y. and Dr. David Montaldi
of Marietta, Ga.; one sister, Rose Marie Montaldi Osgood of Port
Huron, Mich. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister,
Ann Marie Montaldi; and a brother, Dr. Dominic Montaldi. Plans
for a memorial service are not available at this time. Arrangements

Robert Howard "Bob" Shirley
Mr.
Robert Howard "Bob" Shirley, 85, formerly of Hickory, died Monday,
Aug. 15, 2005, at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs,
Calif., after a period of declining health. He was born Dec. 13,
1919, in Hopkins N.C. to the late Robert Lewis and Ethel Ora Cheek
Shirley of West Pine Swamp, Ashe Co., N.C. He was the former owner/operator
of Mitchell's Marina, which was located on Lake Hickory. He served
six years in the Army during World War II. He was stationed at
Camp Callan, Torrey Pines, Calif., then transferred to Hawaii
where he served as an MP. He served his country well during the
attack on Pearl Harbor, was awarded a Good Conduct Medal, and
he was discharged on Aug. 30, 1945. Survivors include his daughter,
Barbara Ann Shirley Rogerson, of Palm Springs Calif.; two grandsons,
Charles Anthony Rogerson of South Carolina, and David Michael
Rogerson of Palm Springs, Calif.; two great-granddaughters, Sarah
Maria Rogerson, of Granite Falls, N.C., and Joanna Rachel Rogerson,
of Granite Falls, N.C.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Guy and
Edna Brown Shirley of Boone, N.C., and Joseph Marion and Ellen
Campbell Shirley of Del Mar, Calif.; one sister, Goldie Lucille
Fischbein of Palm Springs, Calif.; several aunts, uncles, cousins,
neices and nephews in California, Florida, Ohio, North Carolina,
and Texas. Mr. Shirley was preceded in death by his wife of 35
years, Rhoda Lillian Blackburn Shirley; a brother Ray, of California;
and a sister, Nancy Norine Hydle, also of California. Mr. Shirley
chose to donate his body to Loma Linda University in Loma Linda,
California for research purposes, so no services were held. Memorials
may be made to any Diabetes Foundation in Mr. Shirley's name.
Clifford Dowell White
Mr. Clifford Dowell White, 77, of Orchard Road, Deep Gap, died Tuesday evening, August 16, 2005, at Watauga Medical Center.
He was born July 21, 1928, in Wilkes County, a son of the late Elisha and Sarah Moretz White.
Mr. White was a member of Stony Fork Baptist Church and was a farmer.
Survivors include five daughters, Dorothy White, Brenda White, and Debra Jordan, all of Deep Gap; Annie Huffman and Jean Holman of Wilkesboro; three sisters, Ella Hamby, Della Mae Shatley and Georgie Shatley, all of Lenoir; four brothers, James and Oscar White of Ferguson, Ernest White of Wilkesboro, and Bobby White of Reidsville; 11 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Belvia Greene White; one sister, Gertrude Church; and two brothers, George and Roger White.
Services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Stony Fork Baptist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Vernon Eller. The body will lie in state from 1-2 p.m. Burial will follow in the Mt. View Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family received friends Thursday evening from 7-8:30 at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.

Shirley Rich Bolick
Mrs. Shirley Jean Rich Bolick, 62, of 4429 Bolick Road, Lenoir, died Sunday morning, August 14, 2005, at Blowing Rock Hospital.
She was born July 8, 1943, in Tipton County, Indiana, to the late Robert Lee and Alma Mae Meadows Rich.
Mrs. Bolick earned her LPN degree from Hazard (Ky.) Vocational School and was a retired nurse from St. Claire Medical Center in Morehead, Ky. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her husband, Boyd Bolick; one son, Charles Bolick and wife, Cindy; two granddaughters, Crystal Bolick and River Bolick, and two grandsons, Matt Bolick and Forest Bolick, all of Boone; two sisters, Margaret Cooper and husband, Edward, of Clarksville, Tenn. and Beatrice Cooper and husband, Eddie, of Scottsville, Ky.; two brothers, Johnny Lee Rich and wife, Patricia, and James Rich and wife, Wanda, all of Scottsville, Ky. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Edward Lee Bolick.
Services were conducted this morning (Wednesday) at 11 a.m. at Bailey's Camp Baptist Church in Lenoir, officiated by the Rev. Brent Bolick. Burial followed in the Bolick Cemetery.

Louise "Bebe" Denton
Mrs.
Louise "Bebe" Hargrove Davis Denton, 82, of Canton, Ga., died
Sunday, August 14, 2005. She was born Oct. 7, 1922, and was raised
in Vienna, Ga. Mrs. Denton attended Wesleyan College and was awarded
her Bachelors and Master's degrees in Sociology from UNC-Chapel
Hill. She was a lifelong advocate of justice. Her Master's thesis
included photographing and researching the appalling conditions
at poor black schools in rural Georgia long before Brown vs. School
Board. After graduating, she worked for the YWCA and led a group
of college students overseas in the rebuilding of Europe after
World War II. She married A.M. Denton in 1951. They moved to Boone,
N.C. in 1962 for Mr. Denton to chair the Sociology Department
at Appalachian State University. In addition to raising a family,
she worked tirelessly for the elderly and loved animals. She helped
establish the Project on Aging in Boone, was a member of the nursing
home advisory committee, worked for the Retired Senior Volunteer
Program (RSVP), delivered meals on wheels, was a member of numerous
organizations and clubs including the League of Women Voters,
AAUW, bridge and book clubs. She was a devoted member of the First
Baptist Church in Boone. Mrs. Denton loved to walk among the wooded
paths near her home in Boone and worked generously in this community.
Due to declining health she moved back to Georgia in 2002 to be
closer to family. Survivors include one son, Davis Denton of
San Diego, Calif.; one daughter, Mary Leigh Denton of Jasper,
Ga.; one brother, Thomas Hoyt Davis and his wife, MaryAnn, of
Vienna, Ga.; sisters, Eugenia Ash of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. and
Madie Harvard of Vienna, Ga.; and three grandchildren, Chris,
Rose and Skyler. A memorial service will be held Saturday, August
20, at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Boone. Huey Funeral
Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Kathryn Louise Murray Feimster
Mrs.
Kathryn Louise Murray Feimster, died Sunday afternoon, August
14, 2005, at her home in Crumpler, N.C. She was the wife of the
Andrew Davis Feimster and the daughter-in-law of Jack and Rose
Marie Feimster. Mrs. Feimster was born in Durham, N.C., on May
19, 1959, to LeGrande and Clara McCullers Murray. She was a graduate
of Chatham Hall and had attended the University of Oregon before
coming to Appalachian State University as a student in the Earth
Studies Program. It was there that she met and married Andy Feimster
in 1983. They had established a home and business in Crumpler
when in 1996, Kathryn was diagnosed with an extremely rare lung
disease known as Lymphangioleiomyomatosis or LAM which afflicts
only women of child bearing age. In June of that year, she became
the 100th person and the second with her condition to receive
a double lung transplant at Duke University Medical Center. At
her death, she was one of the five of that hundred who had survived.
Always optimistic, she lived her life with zest and without self-pity.
With the aid of the caring individuals at Duke and the unwavering
support of her husband and her mother, she continued to enjoy
the people and things she loved. Their home and the business she
and her husband built together are lasting symbols of the life
they lived in spite of overwhelming odds. At her request, there
will be no funeral. A private celebration of her life will be
held at a later date. Survivors include her husband, Andrew Davis
Feimster; her mother, Clara McCullers Murray; a sister, Suzanne
M. Howe and her husband, Peter; a niece, Britt L. Burns and her
husband, Chad; and a nephew, Scott Little. She was preceded in
death by her father, LeGrande Murray. Memorials may be made in

Gladys Glenn Mast
Mrs.
Gladys Glenn Mast, 93, of Willowdale Church Road, Vilas, died
Monday morning, August 15, 2005, at her home. She was born March
18, 1912, in Watauga County, a daughter of Dalton and Myrtle Mast
Glenn. Mrs. Mast was a graduate of Cove Creek High School and
received her teaching degree from Appalachian State University.
She taught public school for a brief period in the Blackberry
community. Mrs. Mast was a life long member of the Willowdale
Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for more than 50
years. Survivors include one daughter, Leslie Mast Humphreys of
Daytona Beach, Fla. and Vilas; two granddaughters, Kimberly Fischer
of Port Orange, Fla. and Kelly Ingraham and husband, Mark, of
Deltona, Fla.; three great-grandchildren, Danielle Heisley and
Lindsay and Caleb Ingraham; one sister, Mrs. Lucy Lawrence; and
one brother, D.M. Glenn, all of Vilas. She was preceded in death
by her husband, Clint Mast; and her parents, Dalton and Myrtle
Mast Glenn. Services will be conducted Thursday morning at 11
o'clock at the Willowdale Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev.
Chuck Edmondson. The body will lie in state at the church from
10-11 a.m. Burial will follow in the Adams Cemetery. Flowers are
appreciated or the family suggests memorials to the Moldovia Orphanage
Fund, in care of Willowdale Baptist Church, 133 Westside Drive,
Vilas, N.C. 28692. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening
from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home. Austin &
Barnes Funeral Home is serving the Mast family.
Conrad William Storie
Mr. Conrad William Storie, 95, of Blowing Rock Blvd., Lenoir, N.C., died Sunday, August 14, 2005 at Caldwell Memorial Hospital.
He was born Jan. 21, 1910 in Watauga County to the late Nathan William and Nellie Elizabeth Triplette Storie.
Mr. Storie retired from Singer Furniture Industries and was a member of Setzer Creek Baptist Church where he was a trustee.
Survivors include two sons, Hershel Storie and wife, Linda, of Blowing Rock and Claude Storie and wife, Faye, of Lenoir; a daughter, JoAnn Nichols and husband, Lloyd, of Lenoir; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Nathan William and Nellie Elizabeth Triplette Storie; his wife of 66 years, Ida Greer Storie; six brothers, Clinard, Jasper, Leonard, Arnold, Shannon and Charlie Storie; four sisters, Effie Robbins, Roenai Church, Della Hardy and Maquettie Church; and one grandson, Joel Paeton Nichols.
Services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Setzer Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Mashburn and the Rev. Herbert McCoy officiating. Interment followed at the Watson Family Cemetery in Deep Gap.

Glenn E. Teams
Mr.
Glenn E. Teams, 84, died Monday, August 1, 2005 at Ridgeview Terrace
in Rutledge, Tennessee. He was born on Feb. 12, 1921 to Bub and
Ethel Gragg Teams. Mr. Teams was a member of the first graduating
class from the new stone Appalachian High School in Boone. He
married Patricia Julian in Knoxville. He was a member of Fairmont
Presbyterian Church. Survivors include his wife of 58 years Patricia
Julian "Patty" Teams; two sons, Gary Teams and his wife, Glenda,
and Danny Teams and his wife, Janie; and four grandchildren, Danielle,
Chuckie, William and Katie. He is also survived by three sisters,
Edith Sylvester and husband, Emery, of Middleton, Wisconsin, Mamie
Trivette of Boone, and Frances "Frankie" Greene and husband, James,
of Greensboro; seven nieces and two nephews. Burial was at Greenwood
Cemetary in Knoxville, Tn. on Friday, August 5, 2005.
James David "Jim" Townsend
Mr. James David "Jim" Townsend, died August 6, 2005.
He was born March 14, 1941 in Watauga County, to Arthur and Pearl White Townsend.
Survivors include his wife, Nadine Townsend; one son, David "Tater" Townsend and son William of Lenoir; three daughters, Darlene Smith and husband, Mark, and children Lauren, Brandon, Derek and Lily of Valle Crucis, N.C.; Anita Sutton and husband, John, and son Isaiah of Hickory, N.C.; Linda Wiseman and husband, Louie, and children Jessica, Lindsay and Jacob of Linville, N.C.; brother, Roy Townsend and wife, Freida, of Lake Norman, N.C.; Juanita Harmon and husband, Dean, of Miamisburg, Ohio; Paul Townsend and wife, Nita, of Florala, Ala.; Sarah Green Baumann and husband, Doug, of Hamilton, Ohio; Ed Townsend and wife, Rose, of Lenoir, N.C., Pat Powell and husband, Sonny, of Lenoir, N.C., and Ken Townsend and wife, Grace, of Lenoir, N.C.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Arthur and Pearl Townsend; three brothers, Earl, Howard and Jack; and one sister, Mayme Dotson.
A graveside service was held Friday, August 12, at 3 p.m. at the Townsend Family Cemetery off Calico Road in Gamewell.

Mr. Edward Dare Sperry III
Mr.
Edward Dare Sperry III, 60, of Marion Street, Pilot Mountain,
died August 7, 2005, at his residence. He was born May 29, 1945,
in Forsyth County, to the late E.D. Sperry, Jr. and Carol Beasley
Sperry. Mr. Sperry was a member of First Baptist. He served stateside
with a Medical Care unit during his Vietnam service period in
1966. After his military service he worked for the Miramar Seaside
Resort in Montecito where he excelled in Customer Service. He
left to work for his father in the family's business Specialty
Tool & Bolt on Aero Camino, Santa Barbara from 1975-1994. Shortly
after his mother's death he moved back to Pilot Mountain to be
closer to his sister and Beasley cousins, and to live in his mother's
hybrid log cabin/conventional house. Reflecting his mother's passion,
Eddie became an accomplished equestrian. He attended the annual
seasonal polo matches at the Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club
of Santa Barbara. He trained his cutting horse and competed in
regional rodeos. Survivors include one sister, Patricia Dare Sperry
of Boone, N.C.; three aunts, Florence B. Brannon of Pilot Mountain,
Rachel B. Rook of Richmond, Va. and Dorothy (Dottie) Sperry Reynolds
McClellan and husband, Jack, of Santa Barbara, Calif.; cousins,
John Sperry Reynolds, Courtney Reynolds Chapman, Sharon Dare Reynolds,
Monica Carr Gardner, Pierce Butler Reynolds and their 16 progeny;
Betty Shackelford, Kenny Glace, Jr., Norma Ann R. Ryan, Dean Glace,
Dr. Gene Glace, Beverly Worley, Lynn Powell, Doug Brannon, Wendy
Glace and Richard Brannon. He was preceded in death by his maternal
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John E. Beasley, former owner of Pilot
Mountain and Mr. and Mrs. Edward Dare Sperry, Sr. of Santa Barbara,
Calif., formerly of Battle Creek, Michigan; and his parents, E.D.
Sperry Jr. and Carol Beasley Sperry. Services will be conducted
Monday afternoon at 7:30 p.m. at Cox-Needham Chapel. The family
will receive friends frpm 6:30-7:30, prior to the service, at
Cox-Needham Funeral Home. Cox-Needham Funeral Home in Pilot Mountain,
is serving the Sperry family.
Mr. Paul W. Trivett
Mr. Paul W. Trivett, 90, of Sugar Grove and Greensboro, died Friday, Aug. 5, 2005, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro.
He was born on Sept. 14, 1914, in Watauga County, to the late Joe Franklin and Mary Elizabeth Rominger Trivett.
Mr. Trivett graduated from Cove Creek High School and Appalachian State Teachers College with a degree in vocational education. He served four years in the U.S. Army during World War II and attained the rank of staff sergeant. He retired after teaching and coaching for 34 years in the Greensboro school system.
Survivors include one son, Nelson Trivett and wife Marilyn of Greensboro; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Mary Trivett of Banner Elk; and a number of nieces and nephews, including Sandra Shook and Orbie Ward and husband Linville, all of Boone and Gary Ward of Vilas.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Julia Kendall Trivett; four brothers, Roy, Dewey, Charlie and Smithey Trivett and two sisters, Ms. Vertie Trivett and Mrs. Della Mae "Pat" Shook.
A graveside service was conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens in Boone, with the Rev. Quincy Norris officiating.
The family received friends Friday at Hampton Funeral Service in Boone, prior to the service.
