Mr. Fred Winebarger

Mr. Fred Worth Winebarger, age 80, of Meat Camp Road, Todd, died Thursday morning, August 11, 2005, at Watauga Medical Center, following a short illness.

Born in Watauga County March 17, 1925, he was a son of the late Olen G. and Emma Rogers Winebarger. Mr. Winebarger was an Army veteran of World War II, and was retired as a maintenance mechanic with Appalachian State University. He was a member of Hopewell United Methodist Church.

Surviving are: his wife, Martha Evaglee Winebarger; three sons, Fred Gerald Winebarger, Donald Olen Winebarger and wife Mary, all of Todd, and Calvin Wayne Winebarger and wife Phyllis of Boone; one daughter, Zola Winebarger Ward and husband Jim of Zionville; three grandchildren, Amanda Foley and husband Tyler, William Worth Winebarger and Monica Marie Winebarger; one brother, Rev. Woodrow Winebarger of Boone; and one sister, Gertrude Winebarger Proffit of Todd.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Dayton Winebarger, one sister, Gladys Winebarger Moretz, and one infant brother.

Graveside services and burial for Mr. Fred Worth Winebarger will be conducted Saturday morning at 11 o’clock at Pleasant Valley Cemetery. Officiating will be Rev. Mike Howard and Rev. Jim Wells. Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to the Pleasant Valley Cemetery Fund, in care of Murial Winebarger, 2547 Meat Camp Rd., Boone, N.C. 28607.

Friends may call at the Winebarger residence at 4771 Meat Camp Rd., Todd. Austin and Barnes Funeral Home is serving the Winebarger family.

 

Ruby Castle Fox

Ruby Castle Fox, age 91, formerly of 404 Carter Blvd., Elizabethton, died Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2005, in Hermitage Health Center, following a brief illness. A native of Watauga County, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Cordelia Castle and the late C.P. Watts. Mrs. Fox was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church, where she was an active member of the Lunch Bunch. She was a graduate of Appalachian State Teachers College, having received her teacher’s certificate and taught elementary schools in North Carolina before moving to Elizabethton. Mrs. Fox was the previous owner/operator of Hillview Health Center and Hermitage Health Center. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul W. Fox.

Survivors are three daughters and sons-in-law, Jeanette and James “Sam” Bradshaw, Carol and Randall Hutchins, all of Elizabethton, Jane and Steve Blevins, Gray, seven grandchildren and their spouses, David and Janet Blevins, Elizabethton, Mark and Jenny Blevins, Pedasi, Panama, John and Pam Hutchins, Melanie Davis and fiance Mark Honeycutt, Diane and Mark Hyatt, all of Elizabethton, Donna and Randy Dumas, Knoxville, Jeannie and Terry Barker, Elizabethton, ten great-grandchildren, Cody Blevins, Cheanna Blevins, Joshua Hutchins, Michael Hutchins, Taylor Davis, Jacob Davis, Drew Barker, Brad Barker, Meagan Hyatt and Lauren Hyatt. Several nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service for Mrs. Fox will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, August 12, in the Tetrick Funeral Home Riverside Chapel with Pastor Tim Tapp officiating. Music will be under the direction of Jerry Barnett and Mary Lou O’Quinn. The committal and entombment service will follow in the Mausoleum of Hope at Happy Valley Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2 p.m. Friday, prior to the service in the chapel.

Mrs. Ruth Elizabeth Greene Miller

Mrs. Ruth Elizabeth Greene Miller, age 82, of 13395 Highway 221 South, Fleetwood, wife of the late Howard Stanley Miller, died Tuesday night, Aug. 9, 2005, at home. She was born Oct. 7, 1922, in the Old Fields community in Ashe County to the late James Conley and Anna Watson Greene. Mrs. Miller was a graduate of Fleetwood High School and retired from the former Vermont American Corporation in Boone. She was a member of Gap Creek Baptist Church. Survivors include one daughter, Loretta Gentry and husband, Leslie, of Deep Gap; three sons, Clyde Miller and wife Pansy of Deep Gap, Kermit Miller and wife Jane, and Jimmy Miller, all of Fleetwood; six granddaughters, Kaye Burdiss of Purlear, Pamela Cook of Cummings, Georgia, Bronda Cothran of West Jefferson, Kim Miller of Boone, Veronica Hill of Sugar Grove, and Susan Coffey of Fleetwood; three grandsons, Sonny Miller of Vilas, Eric Miller of West Jefferson, and Timothy Miller of Boone; two sisters, Mrs. Bertie Blackburn of Winston-Salem and Mrs. Eula Laurence of West Jefferson; and one brother, J.C. Greene and wife Frankie of Greensboro. She is also survived by 16 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews, including two special nieces, Lucy Lee Brown of Fleetwood and Rebecca West of Virginia Beach, Virginia.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Lucy Clarke, and four brothers, Herbert Greene, Kermit Greene, Perry Greene and Ira Greene. Funeral services were conducted Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. at Gap Creek Baptist Church in Deep Gap, officiated by Rev. Kenny Price, Rev. Paul Coffey and Rev. John Elledge. Burial followed in the Gap Creek Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Gap Creek Cemetery Fund, in care of Bill Moretz, PO Box 575, Deep Gap, NC 28618. Ms. Shannon Mynes

Ms. Shannon Mynes, age 27, of Phillips Road, Elk Park, died Wednesday morning at Watauga Medical Center. Born in Asheville, North Carolina, October 20, 1977, she was a daughter of Sandra Parlier. Ms. Mynes was a painter and a member of the Beech Mountain Baptist Church. Ms. Mynes is survived by one son, Brandon Mynes; her mother, Sandra Parlier; one sister, Sarah Brewer, all of Elk Park; one brother, Darren Norris, U.S. Army, Iraq; her maternal grandparents, Sanford and Joan Parlier of Elk Park; three nephews, Christopher, Michael and Nathaniel Brewer; and by a number of aunts, uncles and cousins. She was preceded in death by her sister, Donna Kay Mynes. Services for Shannon Lee Mynes will be conducted Sunday, Aug. 14, 2005, at 3 p.m. at Beech Mountain Baptist Church, officiated by Rev. David Burnip and Rev. Dennis Church. Burial will follow in the Beech Mountain Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 until 3 p.m. prior to the service at Beech Mountain Baptist Church.

Glenn E. Teams

Glenn E. Teams, 84 ,of Knoxville, Tenn., died on Aug. 1, 2005 at Ridgeview Terrace in Rutledge. He was a member of the Fairmont Presbyterian Church.

Glenn was born on Feb. 12, 1921 to Bub and Ethel Gragg Teams of Boone. He was a member of the first graduating class at the new stone Appalachian High School. He worked with a shipping company in Knoxville and retired from Plasti-Line. Glenn is survived by his wife of 58 years, the former Patricia Julian, and two sons, Gary (wife Glenda) and Danny (wife Janie) Teams of Knoxville, and grandchildren, Danielle, Chuckie, William and Katie. He is also survived by three sisters, Edith (husband Emery) Sylvester of Middleton, Wis., Mamie Trivette of Boone and Frances "Frankie" (husband James C.) Greene of Greensboro, seven nieces and two nephews. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery in Knoxville.

Nancy Bruening Bumbaugh

Nancy Bruening Bumbaugh, 79, of 147 Dogwood Lane, Blowing Rock, died unexpectedly Sunday, Aug. 7, at the Watauga Medical Center in Boone.

Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Joseph Herbert Bruening Sr. and Margaret Easton Liggett Bruening.

Mrs. Bumbaugh lovingly served the Blowing Rock community for more than 50 years, involving herself in many worthwhile projects, including countless hours at the Blowing Rock Library. She was an active member of Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church and a member of Circle 3, and was a comfort to many through her gentle and kind spirit.

Mrs. Bumbaugh is survived by her beloved husband and friend, Robert M. Bumbaugh of the home; a daughter, Margaret Liggett McEachern Cato of Blowing Rock; a son, Andrew “Drew” McEachern III of San Anselmo, Calif.;  grandchildren, Alexander and Eliza Cato of Blowing Rock; a brother, Dr. Joseph Herbert “Pete” Bruening Jr. of Oxford, Miss.; a stepson, Jerry Bumbaugh and his wife, Nanette; step-grandchildren, Felicia Bumbaugh Yarboro and her husband, the Rev. Jonathan Yarboro, and Kristen Bumbaugh Espinosa and her husband, Santiago Espinoso, Phyllis Bumbaugh; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service and celebration of the life of Nancy Bruening Bumbaugh will be held Friday, Aug. 12, at noon at Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church in Blowing Rock. The family will receive friends at the Rumple House, next to the church, at 10:30 a.m.

Memorials may be directed to the James Stuart College Scholarship Fund of Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 393, Blowing Rock, N.C., Blowing Rock Rescue Squad or Blowing Rock Fire Department.

Ola Elizabeth Camp Johnson

Mrs. Ola Elizabeth Camp Johnson, age 81, of 150 Blue Ridge Ave., Boone, wife of the late Hal G. Johnson, died Tuesday morning, Aug. 9, 2005, at Methodist medical Center in Oak Ridge, Tenn.

She was born Aug. 19, 1923, in Rutherfordton, Rutherford County, to the late Robert Carl and Sallie Ann Frady Camp. Mrs. Johnson was a homemaker and a member of Greenway Baptist Church.

Survivors include on daughter, Ms. Sharron Johnson, of Boone; four sons, Eddie Johnson, of Boone, D. H. Johnson and wife, Barbara, of Kingston, Tenn.; Thurman Johnson and wife, Robin, of Blowing Rock and Alton Johnson and wife, Christina, of Melbourne, Fl.; three granddaughters, Kathryn Johnson of Coconut Creek, Fl.; Hope Johnson of Lorton, Va., and Kerri Hodgson of Boone; six grandsons, Christopher Johnson and wife, Jennifer, of Livingston, N.J., Brian Johnson and wife, Amy, of Albermarle; Matthew Johnson of Troy; Brad Hodgson of Kernersville; Justin Hodgson and wife, Melisa, of Boone, and Dane Johnson of Blowing rock; two sisters, Mrs. Ann Frady and Mrs. Ruth Conner, both of Rutherfordton and three sisters-in-law, Madge Phillips and husband, Monk, of Columbus; Mrs. Dorcus Morrow of Rutherfordton and Wanda Moose and husband, Hall, of Taylorsville. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, John Nick Camp.

Services will be conducted Friday morning at 10, at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens Mausoleum Chapel, with Pastor Tim Smith officiating. Entombment will follow in Mount Lawn Mausoleum.

The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6:30 until 8 p.m. at Hampton Funeral Service. At other times, friends may call at the Johnson residence.

Mary Irene Klostermeyer

Mrs. Mary Irene Klostermeyer, age 80, of Monroe, Wisconsin, a former resident of Boone, died Saturday, August 6, 2005 at home.

She was born December 16, 1924, in South Wayne, Wisconsin, to the late John and Lela Stites Gage. Mrs. Klostermeyer graduated from Winslow (Illinois) High School and the University of Wisconsin School of Nursing.

Survivors include her husband of 33 years, Roy C. Klostermeyer of the home; six sons, Pat Hasley, Roy Klostermeyer, III; Bill Klostermeyer, Bob Klostermeyer, James Klostermeyer and Thomas Klostermeyer; one daughter, Kathryn Marie Bender; a brother, Avery Gage and two sisters, Mrs. Arabelle Mitchell and Mrs. Susan Spencer. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son, Michael Hasley, and a daughter, Kim Hasley.

A memorial service will be in Mount Vernon Baptist church Cemetery in Boone.

The family will receive friends Saturday morning from 10 until 11 a.m., at the church, prior to the service.

Shriner Funeral Home in Monroe, Wisconsin, is in charge of the services.

Helen Lee McCoy Morgan

Mrs. Helen Lee McCoy Morgan, age 90, of Oak Ridge, Tenn., died Friday, August 5, 2005, at National Health Care in Oak Ridge.

She was born August 2, 1915, in charlotte, Mecklenburg County, to the late William Thomas and Verdie Lee Hovis McCoy. Mrs. Morgan moved to Oak Ridge with her late husband, Dr. Karl Ziegler Morgan, in 1943. She was a homemaker and a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Oak Ridge.

Survivors include two sons, Karl Z. Morgan, Jr. and wife, Rebecca, of Indian Shores, Fl. and Dr. Eric Morgan of Cookeville, Tenn.; two daughters, Joan Morgan of Indian Rocks Beach, Fl. and Diana Matthews of Tuskegee, Ala.; four grandsons, Matthew Dean Morgan of Clearwater, Fl., and Joseph Morgan of Los Alamos, New Mexico; Sean Morgan of Olympia, Wash., and Brian Matthews of Auburn, Ala.; one brother, John Patrick McCoy, of Simpsonville, S.C., and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Holy Communion Lutheran Church in Foscoe (Banner Elk), with Rev. Larry Campbell officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Martin-Oak Ridge Funeral Home in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Was in charge of arrangements.

Dennie W. Parks

Mr. Dennie W. Parks, age 78, of Toledo, Ohio, died Monday, August 8, 2005, at home, after a lengthy illness.

He was born January 13, 1927, in Saltville, Virginia, to the late V. Whittington Parks and Myrtle Tester Parks. The Parks family moved to the Beaver Dam community in Watauga County, where he grew up and graduated from Bethel High School. Mr. Parks was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and retired from Acklin Stamping Company in Toledo, Ohio, after 47 years of service. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Julia Millsaps Parks, of the home; four sisters, Helen Waters Midema, of York, Maine; Vivian Parks Ward www.newcomerfamily.com. of Vilas; Evelyn Parks Ward and Betty Parks Presnell, both of Toledo, Ohio; one brother, Edmond Guy, of Kittery, Maine; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Mance Guy and Marvin Parks, and a sister, Iva Dean Eggers.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home Chapel in Toledo. Burial will follow in Toledo Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends Friday afternoon and evening from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home. At other times, friends may call at the Parks residence, 315 Montroyal Drive in Toledo.

In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorial contributions to Timbered Ridge Baptist Church and Cemetery Fund, in care of Phyllis Harmon, 287 Dishman Road, Sugar Grove, N.C. 28679.

Frank Benjamin Proffitt

Mr. Frank Benjamin Proffitt, 56, of Meat Camp Road, Todd, died Sunday evening, Aug. 7, 2005, at home.

Born in Watauga County Sept. 8, 1946, he was a son of the late Frank Noah and Bessie Mae Hicks Proffitt. Mr. Proffitt was an accomplished musician, playing the banjo, guitar and dulcimer. Frank played throughout North Carolina with the Visiting Artists Program.

Surviving are his wife, Sue Nell Potter Proffitt; one son, Jimmy Proffitt and wife, Jackie, of Newland; four grandchildren, Ashley Proffitt, Chase South, and Benjamin and Sidney Proffitt; three brothers, Ed Proffitt and wife, Paulette, of Vilas, Oliver Proffitt and wife, Rita, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Gerald Proffitt and wife, Joyce, of Granite Falls; and one sister, Phillis Guy and husband, J.D., of Trap Hill, N.C.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Timmy Proffitt, and one brother, Dr. Ronald Proffitt.

Services will be conducted Wednesday evening at 8 at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be the Rev. Kenneth Phipps.

The family will receive friends Wednesday evening prior to the service from 6 until 8 at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.

Grave side services and burial will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 2 at the Millsaps Cemetery.

Paul W. Trivette

Mr. Paul William Trivette, 90, of Sugar Grove and Greensboro, died Friday, Aug. 5, 2005, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro.

He was born Sept. 14, 1914, in Sugar Grove, Watauga County, to the late Joe Franklin and Mary Elizabeth Rominger Trivette.

Mr. Trivette graduated with a degree in vocational education. He served four years in the U.S. Army during World War II and attained the rank of staff sergeant.

He retired from the Greensboro school system after teaching and coaching for 34 years. He was also a cattle farmer.

Survivors include one son, Nelson Trivette, and wife, Marilyn, of Greensboro; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Mary Trivette, of Banner Elk; and a number of nieces and nephews, including Sandra Shook and Orbie Ward and husband, Linville, all of Boone, and Gary Ward of Vilas.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Julia Kendall Trivette; four brothers, Roy Trivette, Dewey Trivette, Charlie Trivette and Smithey Trivette, and two sisters, Ms. Vertie Trivette and Mrs. Della Mae “Pat” Shook.

Graveside services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2 at Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens, with the Rev. Quincy Norris officiating.

The family will receive friends Friday afternoon from 12:30 until 1:30 at Hampton Funeral Service, prior to the graveside service.

Denver Lee Cheek

Mr. Denver Lee Cheek, 79, of 4063 Pine Swamp Road, Fleetwood, died Saturday night, Aug. 6, 2005, at Blowing Rock Hospital Extended Care.

He was born Oct. 10, 1925 in Pine Swamp, Ashe County, to the late Levi Martin and Helen Shirley Cheek. Mr. Cheek was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and retired owner and operator of Denver Cheek Trucking Company.

After moving back to Fleetwood in 1988, he was an antiques dealer and had a booth at Wildcat Flea Market in Deep Gap. He was a member of Old Fields Baptist Church in Fleetwood.

Survivors include four sons, Jerry Cheek and wife, Donna, of Boone; Ron Cheek of Nashville, Tenn., Rick Cheek and wife, Debbie, of Durham, and Steven Cheek of Tucson, Ariz.; four granddaughters, Rayna Cheek of Charlotte, Kelly Cheek and Allie Cheek, both of Durham, and Nicole Cheek of Tucson; five grandsons, Rich Cheek of Boone, Scott Cheek and wife, Christie, of Zionville, Riley Cheek of Durham, Jonathan Cheek of Charlotte and Ryan Cheek of Tucson; four sisters, Della Glover and husband, Harold, of Pensacola, Fla., Mrs. Louise O’Shields of Great Falls, S.C., Mrs. Avalee Walker of Amarillo, Texas, and Grace Gentry and husband, Ed, of Lenoir; and three brothers, Dwight Cheek and wife, Linda, and Edwin Cheek and wife, Fody, all of Amarillo, Texas, and Shirrell Cheek and wife, Barbara, of Fleetwood.

He is also survived by four great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Keepers Cheek; a sister, Mrs. Ola Kincaid, and two brothers, Leslie Cheek and Dallas Cheek.

Services will be conducted Tuesday morning at 11 at Old Fields Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jack Miller and the Rev. Bill Burchett officiating. Military grave side honors and burial will follow in Old Fields Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends this evening (Monday) from 7 until 8:30 at Hampton Funeral Service.

Clyde Lance Hamby

Mr. Clyde Lance Hamby, 33, of Smith Road, Deep Gap, died Saturday afternoon, Aug. 6, 2005, at home.

Born in Watauga County Sept. 27, 1971, he was a son of Joyce Phillips Hamby and the late Bill Russell Hamby. He was employed at Hospitality Mints and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving are his mother, Joyce Phillips Hamby of Deep Gap, a brother, Dwayne Hamby and finance, Ann Moretz, of Deep Gap, and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services were conducted today (Monday) at 2 p.m. at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating were the Rev. Harvey Presnell, the Rev. Mike Barfoot and the Rev. Rick Cornejo. Burial followed in the Mt. Paran Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family received friends Monday afternoon from 12:30 until 2 prior to the service at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.

Deatrice Goldie Storie McLean

Deatrice Goldie Storie McLean, 82, of Granite Falls, died Saturday, Aug. 6, 2005, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital.

She was born May 2, 1923 in Washington County, Va., to the late Charlie and Allie Lowrance Storie.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hewie McDonald McLean, three brothers and four sisters.

Mrs. McLean was a loving mother, homemaker and a member of Sunrise Baptist Church.

She is survived by one son, Thomas “Eddie” McLean and his wife, Judy, of Hudson; two sisters, Celia Jones of Boone and Polly Rule of Winston-Salem; one grandson, Jerry McLean and wife, Amanda, of Lenoir; one granddaughter, Jennifer Carver and husband, Robert, of Newton; and three great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Elijah and Jonah McLean.

Services will be conducted Tuesday, Aug. 9, at 2 p.m. at Sunrise Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. David Woods. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 12:45 until 1:45 p.m. at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sunrise Baptist Church at 2643 Mission Road, Hudson, N.C. 28638.

Teresa Pitz Milford, 96, of Crabapple Lane, Blowing Rock, died Wednesday evening, Aug. 3, 2005, at her home.

She was born April 7, 1909 in Barberton, Ohio, a daughter of Joseph and Christina Angst Pitz.

Mrs. Milford was a resident of Barberton before moving to North Carolina in 1977. She was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church and was employed as a cashier at the Acme Grocery Store in Barberton. Many days, after work as a cashier, she would volunteer at St. Edward’s Home. She also volunteered for the Red Cross.

In Boone, she was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, active in the RSVP (Retired Seniors Volunteer program), delivered Meals on Wheels and worked with adults through ESL (English as a Second Language programs.

Survivors include two daughters, Ellen Milford and Paula Mahoney, both of Blowing Rock; two sons, Philip Milford and wife, Judi, of Vienna, Ohio, and Lawrence Milford and wife, Mary, of Barberton, Ohio; and her daughter-in-law, Linda Milford of Akron, Ohio. Fifteen grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild also survive.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Black Milford; and two sons, Thomas and Fred Milford.

Grave side services will be held Saturday, Aug. 13,  at 11 a.m. at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Akron, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Hospice of Watauga County, 136 Furman Road, Boone, N.C. 28607.
