Kendra Renee Hamby Bradley
Mrs. Kendra Renee Hamby Bradley, 32, of Casar, N.C., died August 4, 2005, at Carolinas Medical Center.
She was born Nov. 25, 1972 to Kenneth Roy Hamby and the late Katherine Melton Hamby.
Mrs. Bradley was a Media Center Specialist with Cleveland County Schools at Fallston Elementary School. She was a member of Casar Baptist Church; a graduate of Appalachian State University and was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa teachers sorority. She was awarded Teacher of the Year in 2002 at Fallston Elementary School and was active in the Relay for Life.
Survivors include her husband, Jeffrey Warren Bradley; a daughter, Mackenzie Ellen Bradley of the home; her father, Kenneth Roy Hamby of Casar, N.C.; a brother, Kenny Hamby and wife, Lisa, of Shelby, N.C.; her grandmother, Dora Hamby of Casar, N.C.; a great uncle, Jack Guarry Melton of the home; a brother-in-law, Evon Bradley and wife, Nancy, of Waco; three sister-in-laws, Peggy Bradley, Sandra Jenkins and husband, Nelson, and Janice Nencetti and husband, Tom, all of Gastonia, N.C.; numerous aunts and uncles; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Casar Baptist Church with the Rev. Travis Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Casar Baptist Church Cemetery. The body will lie in state from 1:30-2 p.m., prior to services.
The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Stamey Funeral Home.

Arlus Burton Glenn
Mr. Arlus Burton Glenn, 80, of 1028 Ward Branch Road, Sugar Grove, died Wednesday morning, August 3, 2005, at Watauga Medical Center.
He was born Oct. 6, 1924, in Sugar Grove, Watauga County, to the late Thomas and Lori Tester Glenn.
Mr. Glenn was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and retired from the Grounds Maintenance Department at Appalachian State University. He was a faithful member of Antioch Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Larry Glenn and wife, Barbara, and Lloyd Glenn and wife, Sarah, all of Sugar Grove; one grandson, Gary Glenn; two granddaughters, Amanda Wilson and Nechia Wilson; and three great-grandchildren, Selena Wilson, Dakota McCrary and Emily Wilson, all of Sugar Grove; one sister, Mrs. Floy Ward of Vilas. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Essie Potter Glenn; two sisters, Mrs. Gladys Matheson and Frankie Glenn; and four brothers, George Glenn, Frank Glenn, Charles Glenn and Will Glenn.
Services were conducted this morning (Friday) at 11 a.m. at Antioch Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Carl Wilson and the Rev. Ray Greene. Burial followed in the Glenn Family Cemetery in Sugar Grove.

Rev. Elige H. Greer
Rev. Elige Hamilton Greer, 90, of 562 Brown Hollow Road, Creston, died Thursday afternoon, August 4, 2005, at Watauga Medical Center.
He was born Jan. 12, 1915, in Todd, Watauga County, to the late Thomas Jefferson Greer and Zora Winebarger Greer.
Rev. Greer was a retired farmer and Baptist minister. He pastored churches for 40 years, including Prosperity Baptist Church in Ashe County, Sutherland Baptist Church and Rock Creek Baptist Church, where he was a member, for 27 years.
Survivors include one daughter, Ivalee Greer Vines of Creston; two sons, Clay Greer and wife, Phyllis, of Boomer and Joseph Greer of Creston; one granddaughter, Mary Ann Keller and husband, Tommy, of Boone; two grandsons, Dana Flannery and wife, Debbie, of Mountain City, Tenn. and Jerry Flannery and wife, Teresa, of Marion; two sisters, Mrs. Lula Graybeal of Boone and Mrs. Viola Trivette of Creston. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ola Miller Greer; a daughter, Anna Mae Flannery; a granddaughter, Brandy Main; three sisters, Mrs. Mattie Brown, Mrs. Allie Miller and Mrs. Beulah Miller; and three brothers, Roby Greer, Noah Greer and Frank Greer.
Services will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Rock Creek Baptist Church. The body will lie in state at the church from 1-2 p.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Charlie McCoy, the Rev. Glenn Woodie and the Rev. Derick Wilson. Burial will follow in the Greer Family Cemetery in Creston.
The body will be taken to the church Saturday afternoon where the family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6-9 p.m. At other times, friends may call at the Greer residence.

Lena Simmons Hodges
Mrs. Lena Simmons Hodges, 89, of 230 Stewart Simmons Road, Deep Gap (Triplett community), wife of the late Marion Larkin “Bob” Hodges, died Wednesday morning, August 3, 2005, at Blowing Rock Hospital Extended Care.
She was born Feb. 4, 1916, in Triplett, Watauga County, to the late Charles Todd Simmons and Lula Jane Harrison Simmons.
Mrs. Hodges attended Elk School and was a homemaker. She was an active member of Mount Ephriam Baptist Church for many years.
Survivors include one daughter, Wilma Hodges Hartley of Triplett; one son, Rick Hodges and wife, Vicki, of Gastonia; and a sister-in-law, Bina T. Simmons of Triplett. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Scottie Hodges Kelly; and a brother, Stewart Simmons.
Services were conducted this afternoon (Friday) at 2 p.m. at Mount Ephriam Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Rick Critcher and the Rev. Tim Dockery. Burial followed in the Simmons Cemetery.

Teresa Pitz Milford
Mrs. Teresa Pitz Milford, 96, of Crabapple Lane, Blowing Rock, died Wednesday evening, August 3, 2005, at her home.
She was born April 7, 1909 in Barberton, Ohio, a daughter of Joseph and Christina Angst.
Mrs. Milford was a resident of Barberton before moving to North Carolina in 1977. She was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church and was employed as a cashier at the Acme Grocery Store in Barberton. In Boone, she was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Ellen Milford and Paula Mahoney, both of Blowing Rock; two sons, Philip Milford and wife, Judi, of Vienna, Ohio and Lawrence Milford and wife, Mary, of Barberton, Ohio; and her daughter-in-law, Linda Milford of Akron, Ohio. Fifteen grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild also survive.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Black Milford; and two sons, Thomas and Fred Milford.
Graveside services will be held at a later date at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Akron, Ohio.

Roby Howard Swift
Mr. Roby Howard Swift, 83, of Lansing, died Friday, July 29, 2005, at his residence.
He was born June 29, 1922, in Butler, Tenn., the son of the late Joseph Dewey and Auriola Nicole Harmon.
Mr. Swift served in the United States Navy in World War II from May 26, 1944 to April 27, 1946. He was a self-employed electrician.
Survivors include his wife, Notra Richardson Swift; two sons, Rev. Carl Swift of Mountain City, Tenn. and David Swift of Charleston, S.C.; three step-sons, Tom Miller of Jefferson, Allen Miller and Michael Miller, both of Lansing; three step-daughters, Rita Farmer of Virginia, Sandy Beach of Jefferson and Sally Gentry of Kernersville; six brothers, Bill Swift and Henry Swift, both of Indiana, Ed Swift, Jim Swift and Charlie Swift, all of Georgia, and Norman Swift of Boone; a sister, Mary Norris of Boone; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were conducted August 1, at Smethport Baptist Church with the Rev. James Sechrest, the Rev. Lloyd Day and the Rev. Carl Swift officiating. Burial followed in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery with military rites.

Darrell Lee Combs
Mr. Darrell Lee Combs, 56, of Hwy. 194 North, Boone, died Sunday night, July 31, 2005, at Watauga Medical Center.
He was born in Ashe County, May 2, 1949, a son of the late Columbus Combs and Myrtle Jean Mullis Earp.
Mr. Combs was a member of Bairds Creek Baptist Church and had worked as a forklift operator for both Broyhill and Singer Furniture.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanette Richards Combs; two sons, Darren Combs of Boone and James Combs of Greensboro; one grandson, Dakota Johnson of Lenoir; his mother, Myrtle Earp of Vilas; three sisters, Marie Earp of Vilas, Rosa Lee Guy and Carolyn Beaver, both of Lenoir; one step-sister, Melinda Ward, and one step-brother, Charlie Arnette, both of Vilas.
He was preceded in death by his father, Columbus Combs; and his step-father, Clyde Arnette.
Services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be the Rev. Melvin Hodges and the Rev. Dan Church. Burial will follow in the Jont Brown Cemetery.
The family received friends Tuesday evening from 6-7:30 at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.

Dr. Thomas P. Dettbarn
Dr. Thomas P. Dettbarn, 46, of Adrian, Michigan, died suddenly at his home, Saturday, July 30, 2005.
He was born Oct. 31, 1958, in Suffern, N.Y., to Thomas and Marion McNulty Dettbarn.
On July 10, 1982, he married Vivian Robles in Santa Barbara, Calif. He graduated from John S. Burke Catholic High School in Goshen, N.Y. and received his Bachelors of Music Education from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, N.J. He then continued his education and received his MA in music from Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C. and his Doctorate of Sacred Music in organ performance from the Graduate Theological Foundation in South Bend, Ind. Tom received his Graduate Certificate in Theology and Liturgy from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. Tom did post graduate work in organ at the University of Memphis, Tenn. He was a Lifetime Fellow of the Graduate Theological Foundation, a Colleague of the American Guild of Organists and a member of the National Pastoral Musicians Association. He was a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia National Music Fraternity and was also the past advisor for the local chapter. Tom was a member of the Theta Alpha Phi Theatre Honorary and past director of the Lenawee Community Chorus.
Dr. Dettbarn taught music at both Siena Heights and Adrian College, and played at the following local churches: St. Joseph Shrine, First Presbyterian Church, St. Joseph Catholic Church, and currently was the Director of Music with the Adrian Dominican Sisters. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the education council for St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Guadalupe Society.
Survivors include his wife, Vivian Robles Dettbarn; one son, Ryan William Dettbarn; his mother, Marion Dettbarn of Boone N.C.; his siblings, Katherine (William) Gorr of Bloomington, Ind., Patricia (Colin) Begg of State College, Pa., Richard (Tina) Dettbarn of Virginia Beach, Va., Nancy (Henri-Paul) Sicsic of Vancouver, B.C., Susanne (Darren) Dailey of Boston, Mass., James Dettbarn of Greensboro, N.C., Stephen (Juleen) Dettbarn of Atlanta, Ga.; Vivian’s sister, Janet (David) Hagerty of Tehachapi, Calif.; nine nieces; six nephews; one grand-niece; one grand-nephew; several aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father Thomas Walter Dettbarn.
Visitation was held Monday, August 1, from 6 to 8 p.m. and will be held Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home, and Thursday from 9 to 10 a.m at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
A funeral Liturgy will be offered Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with Fr. David Hudgins as Celebrant. Cremation will follow the service.

Susie Hampton Flick
Mrs. Susie Hampton Flick, 64, of 140 Flick Drive, Boone, died Saturday, July 30, 2005, at Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta.
She was born Oct. 6, 1940, in Boone, Watauga County, to the late Jerry Dean and Della Triplett Hampton.
Mrs. Flick was a graduate of Appalachian High School and a retired legal secretary from Clement Law Office. She worked for the former Watauga Savings & Loan Association for a number of years and as a teller and receptionist at Centura Bank. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one son, Jimmy Allen Flick and wife, Sarah, and one daughter, Danna Sutherland Lyons and husband, Danny, all of Boone; three granddaughters, Hope Lyons of Boca Raton, Fla., Haley Lyons and Noelle Austin, both of Boone; one grandson, Grant Austin of Chapel Hill; a son-in-law, Robin Austin of Boone; one sister, Bonnie Restivo of Boone; three brothers, J.D. Hampton of Winston-Salem, Bill Hampton and wife, Mary, of Triplett, and Jerry Lee Smith and wife, Yvonne, of Sugar Grove; one step-daughter, Carolyn Keeler and husband, Kurt, and two step-sons, John Keeler and wife, Pam, and Jimmy Keeler, all of Wisconsin. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Dan G. Sutherland; her second husband, Jimmy Gordon Flick; her third husband, Edward Keeler; a daughter, Anne Sutherland Austin; a grandson, Jordan Gabrielle Austin; and a brother, Claude Hampton.
A Celebration of Life and memorial service will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 1 o’clock at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Gordon Noble officiating.
The family will greet friends at the funeral home, following the service.

Wallace Ives “Bud” Hayhurst
Mr. Wallace Ives "Bud" Hayhurst, 84, of 6130 Aloma Lane, Boca Raton, Fla. and Beech Mountain, died Monday, July 25, 2005, at Hospice By The Sea in Boca Raton. 
He was born Sept. 10, 1920, in Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio, to the the late Emery Roe and Jessie Ives Hayhurst.
Mr. Hayhurst was a graduate of Ohio State University and served in the U. S. Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a retired real estate broker, having retired in 1982.
Survivors include his wife, Josephine Moors Hayhurst; three daughters, Pamela Winters and husband, Dan, of Boynton Beach, Fla.; Leslie Hayhurst of Beech Mountain and Ms. Stacey Fuentes of Boca Raton; three grandsons, Eric Hirsch and Stephen Hirsch, both of Boynton Beach and Jonathan Fuentes of Boca Raton; one great-grandchild, Tristan Hirsch of Boynton Beach; two brothers, Bert Hayhurst of Toledo, Ohio and Dr. James Hayhurst of Scottsbluff, Nebraska; also, a number of nieces and nephews.
A private graveside service was conducted Friday, July 29, at the Hayhurst Family Cemetery in Beech Mountain.

Ruth Alma Hurley Lockhart
Mrs. Ruth Alma Hurley Lockhart, 94, of Boone, a former resident of Florida, died Sunday, July 31, 2005, at Glenbridge Health Care.
She was born March 24, 1911, in Scioto County, Ohio, to the late James Alfred and Wilhelmina Ellen Mershon Hurley.
Mrs. Lockhart was a homemaker and a member of Sciotoville Baptist Church, where she attended until moving to Florida in 1996. After becoming a resident of Boone, she was cared for by her niece, Vivien Duncan Hay.
In addition to Vivien, she is survived by eight nephews, ten nieces and a number of great-nieces and great-nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Garnet Lee Lockhart; a daughter, Barbara Lockhart; three brothers, Harley Hurley, Dennis Hurley and James Hurley, Jr.; and two sisters, Virginia Brannon and Alda Duncan.
Services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at Brant Funeral Home Chapel in Sciotoville, Ohio. Burial will follow in Scioto Memorial Cemetery.

Frances Canter Pardue
Mrs. Frances Canter Pardue, 89, of 864 Chestnut Drive, Mountain City, Tenn., died Sunday, July 31, 2005, at the Mountain City Care Center, following an extended illness.
She was born August 29, 1915, in Trade, Tenn., to the late Jonathan and Sarah Miller Canter.
Mrs. Pardue was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening and flowers. She was a member of the Mountain City Church of Christ.
Survivors include three daughters, Alma Sala and husband, Don, Janice Pardue and Carol Pardue, all of Mountain City, Tenn.; three sons, Edgar Pardue and wife, Georgia, of Zionville, N.C., Butler Pardue of Soddy Daisy, Tenn. and Jimmy Pardue and wife, Louise, of Mountain City, Tenn.; one sister, Pauline Reedy of Mountain City, Tenn.; one brother, Junior Canter of Trade, Tenn.; five grandchildren, David Pardue and wife, Wanda, of Mocksville, N.C., Donna Burgess and husband, Brent, Arlen Sala and wife, Sharon, Gary Sala, all of Mountain City, Tenn. and Melissa Pardue of Soddy Daisy, Tenn.; four great-grandchildren, Greta Burgess, Deidre Burgess, Shania Sala and Austin Sala, all of Mountain City, Tenn.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Pardue, who passed away in 1995; three sisters, Bessie Potter, Flora Tester and Hattie Snyder; three brothers, Flavil Canter, Earl Canter and Stacey Canter; and one daughter-in-law, Patsy Ann Pardue, who passed away July 24, 2005.
Services will be conducted Thursday evening at 8 p.m. from the Hux-Tetrick Funeral Home Chapel with Mr. Everette Morefield and Mr. Mike Taylor officiating. Graveside services and interment will be conducted Friday morning at 11 a.m. in the Sunset Memorial Park. Family, pallbearers and friends are asked to assemble by 10:30 a.m. on Friday at the Funeral Home to go in procession.

Iva Jean Harmon Parrish
Mrs. Iva Jean Harmon Parrish, 75, of 316 Carolina Street, Dobson, a native and former resident of Watauga County, died Monday, August 1, 2005, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem, after a long illness.
She was born July 24, 1930, in Sugar Grove, to the late George W. and Iva Lee Tester Harmon.
Mrs. Parrish graduated from Cove Creek High School and Appalachian State Teachers College. She worked as office manager for the State of New Jersey and other businesses until 1992, at which time she retired and moved from Hackettstown, New Jersey to Dobson. She was a member of Willow Valley Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Lewis T. Parrish; three sons, Major Lewis M. Parrish (USAF, Retired) and wife, Karen, of Melbourne, Fla.; M/Sgt. Eric H. Parrish and wife, Nancy, of Pope AFB in Fayetteville, and T/Sgt. George A. Parrish and wife, Stacie, of Seymour Johnson AFB in Goldsboro; one daughter, Tama Byrnes and husband, Steven, of Simpsonville, S.C.; a foster daughter, Michele Hatzis of Royersford, Pa.; four brothers, Raymond Harmon and wife, Sue, of Boone; Oscar Harmon and wife, Joanne, of Hixson, Tenn.; Albert Harmon and wife, Esther, of West Jefferson; and Len D. Harmon of Sugar Grove; one sister, Maxie Cooke and husband, Arthur, of Sugar Grove. She is also survived by two grandsons, five granddaughters, one foster granddaughter and seven nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey T. Parrish.

Freece “Peggy” Cline Richardson
Mrs. Freece “Peggy” Cline Richardson, 94, of 150 Edgewood Drive, Boone and Jupiter, Fla., died Sunday morning, July 31, 2005, at Watauga Medical Center after a brief illness.
She was born Jan. 23, 1911, in Crumpler, Ashe County, to the late Gordon David and Nora Virginia Vaught Sturgill.
Mrs. Richardson graduated from Virginia-Carolina High School and the Teacher Training School in Grassy Creek (Ashe County), after which she taught school in White Top, Va. Later she attended Beauty School in Roanoke, Va., to become a hairdresser. Mrs. Richardson was a member of Boone United Methodist Church for 64 years where she was a life member of the United Methodist Women. She was a former Sunday school teacher for many years and participated in many fund raising activities.
She loved flower gardening and was a lifetime member of the Blue Ridge Garden Club. She was an avid golfer and a charter member of the Boone Golf Club. Mrs. Richardson was a talented artist and won many awards both in North Carolina and Florida. Some of her paintings are displayed at Boone United Methodist Church. She was a member of various clubs and participated in the N.C. Senior Games in Raleigh and won many awards. Even at age 94, she continued to take art classes in North Carolina and Florida. She was an author of a book named “The River Keeps Flowing” and also loved writing poetry and jingles for all types of occasions. She had many interests but most of all she loved life and loved people of all ages. Her smile and positive attitude could lift the spirits of everyone around her and always made them feel very special. She will be missed very much by her family and friends.
Survivors include two sons, James Curtis “Jim” Cline, Jr. and wife, Linda, of Boone and Larry Cline and wife, Frances, of Greensboro; two daughters, Janie Cline Cape and husband, Randy, of Longview, Texas and Linda Cline Stevens and husband, Robert, of Jupiter, Fla.; one sister, Mrs. Gladys Osborne Kester of Jefferson. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, J.C. Cline, Sr.; her second husband, Dr. O.K. Richardson; a sister, Mrs. Zeffa Little; and two brothers, Bradley Sturgill and French Sturgill.
Services will be conducted Wednesday morning at 11 o’clock at Boone United Methodist Church, with Dr. Ronald L. Smith and Dr. George Naff officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens.
The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Hampton Funeral Service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund of Boone United Methodist Church, 471 New Market Blvd., Boone, N.C. 28607.

Roby Howard Swift
Roby Howard Swift, 83, of Lansing, died Friday morning, July 29, 2005, at home.
He was born in Butler, Carter County, Tenn., to the late Joseph Dewey and Auriola Harmon Swift.
Mr. Swift was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a retired self-employed electrician.
Survivors include his wife, Notra Richardson Swift; two sons, Rev. Carl Swift of Mountain City, Tenn. and David Swift of Charleston, S.C.; three step-sons, Tom Miller of Jefferson, Allen Miller and Michael Miller, both of Lansing; three step-daughters, Rita Farmer of Virginia, Sandy Beach of Jefferson and Sally Gentry of Kernersville; six brothers, Bill Swift and Henry Swift, both of Indiana; Ed Swift, Jim Swift and Charlie Swift, all of Georgia, and Norman Swift of Vilas; one sister, Mrs. Mary Norris of Zionville. He is also survived by three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Services were conducted this morning (Monday) at 11 a.m. at Smethport Baptist Church in West Jefferson, officiated by the Rev. James Sechrest, the Rev. Lloyd Day and the Rev. Carl Swift. Military graveside honors and burial followed in Ashelawn Memorial Gardens in Jefferson.
Boone Family Funeral Home in West Jefferson was in charge of arrangements.
