Irene Farthing

Miss Irene Farthing, 82, of Bethel Road, Vilas, died Thursday morning, July 28, 2005, at Glenbridge Health Care in Boone. She was born Sept. 27, 1922 in the Bethel community, a daughter of Carl Howell and Clara Greene Farthing. For more than 40 years, Miss Farthing was a Beauty Shop Operator for H.P. King Company in Bristol, Tenn. She was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church. Survivors include two sisters, Carrie Lou Farthing Stump and husband, Earl, of Bristol, Tenn., and Mary Nell Farthing Vines and husband, Brownie, of Burlington; her sister-in-law, Marie Farthing of Boone; three nieces, Sharon Harbin of Vilas, Diane Beach and husband, Terry, of Boone and Norma Jean Vines of Burlington; and one nephew, Tommy Farthing and wife, Ann, of Woodlawn, Va. One great-nephew and a number of great-nieces also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Clara Greene Farthing; and one brother, Harold Farthing. Services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Bethel Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Charles McKnight.

The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon from noon until 2 o’clock, prior to services, at the Bethel Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery. Flowers are appreciated or the family suggests memorials to the Bethel Baptist Church, 123 Mountain Dale Road, Vilas, N.C. 28692. Austin & Barnes Funeral Home is serving the Farthing family.

Mr. Wallace Ives "Bud" Hayhurst

Mr. Wallace Ives “Bud” Hayhurst, 84, of Boca Raton, Fla. and Beech Mountain, died Monday, July 25, 2005, at Hospice By The Sea in Boca Raton. He was born Sept. 10, 1920, in Columbus, Ohio, to the late Emery and Jessie Ives Hayhurst. Mr. Hayhurst was a graduate of Ohio State University and served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a retired real estate broker, having retired in 1982. Survivors include his wife, Josephine Moors Hayhurst; three daughters, Pamela Winters and husband, Dan, of Boynton Beach, Fla., Leslie Hayhurst of Beech Mountain and Stacey Fuentes of Boca Raton, Fla.; three grandsons, Eric Hirsch and Stephen Hirsch, both of Boynton Beach and Jonathan Fuentes of Boca Raton; one great-grandchild, Tristan Hirsch of Boynton Beach; two brothers, Bert Hayhurst of Toledo, Ohio and Dr. James Hayhurst of Scottsbluff, Nebraska. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews. A private graveside service was conducted today (Friday) at the Hayhurst Family Cemetery in Beech Mtn. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a Hospice Unit or to the Alzheimer’s Association, Western North Carolina Chapter, 3 Louisiana Avenue, Asheville, N.C. 28806-3419. Hampton Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.

Ruby Woodring Idol

Mrs. Ruby Faye Woodring Idol, 65, of 7043 Old Highway 421 South, Deep Gap, died Monday morning, July 25, 2005, at home.

She was born August 10, 1939, in Todd, Watauga County, to Bina Lewis Woodring and the late Glenn Howard Woodring.

Mrs. Idol was a graduate of Appalachian High School and retired from Shadowline, Inc. after 27 years of service as a seamstress. She was a member and former Sunday school teacher at Laurel Springs Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Bill Idol; one son, Larry Idol and wife, Karen; and her mother, Mrs. Bina Woodring, all of Boone; three sisters, Pearl Watson and husband, Nulan, Thelma Taylor and husband, Rabon, and Ms. Wilma Sutherland, all of Boone; and three brothers, Odell Woodring and wife, Lona, of Boone, Rhonda Woodring and wife, Carol, of Hudson; and Earl Woodring and wife, Rachel, of Zionville. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

Services were conducted this morning (Wednesday) at 11 a.m. at Laurel Springs Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Brent Bolick. Burial followed in the Laurel Springs Church Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Laurel Springs Baptist Church Building Fund, 174 Brown Farm Road, Boone, N.C. 28607.

Hampton Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.

 

Mary Frances “Boots” Klutz Walker

Mrs. Mary Frances “Boots” Klutz Walker, 73, of Oak Street, Boone, died Sunday evening, July 24, 2005, at her home.

She was born August 31, 1931, in Wilkes County, a daughter of William Harry and Jacqueline Welborne Klutz.

Mrs. Walker and her husband, Mitch, were residents of Rowland for more than 40 years. She was an active member of the Rowland United Methodist Church as well as the Rowland Garden Club and the Rowland Book Club. Mrs. Walker retired from BB&T in Rowland as a service representative.

Survivors include two daughters, Deborah Walker of Boone and Michelle Harris Walker of Asheboro.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Mitch Harris Walker; and her sister, Peggy Klutz Triplett.

Graveside services will be conducted Thursday morning at 11:30 at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens in Boone, officiated by the Rev. Joe Browde. The family will receive friends Thursday morning from 10-11 a.m., prior to services, at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.

Flowers are appreciated or the family suggests memorials to the Duke Alzheimer’s Foundation, Duke Medical Center, P.O. Box 2914, Durham, N.C. 27710; to the Watauga Humane Society, 200 Casey Lane, Boone, N.C. 28607; or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Iris Vannoy Watson

Mrs. Iris Vannoy Watson, 85, of Fleetwood, died Monday, July 25, 2005, at Watauga Medical Center.

She was born Jan. 23, 1920, in Ashe County, to the late Elton and Vera Moretz Vannoy.

Mrs. Watson was a homemaker and a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Deep Gap. She and her husband owned and operated 221 Grocery for 16 years.

Survivors include her husband of 66 years, Eugene “Genie” Watson; five sons, Rev. Dean Watson and wife, Shirley, Jack Watson and wife, Wilma, Lavern Watson and wife, Martha, and Terry Watson, all of Fleetwood; and Tom Watson and wife, Joyce, of Zionville; two brothers, Jay Vannoy and wife, Jane, and Leonard Vannoy and wife, Nellie, all of Winston-Salem; and two sisters, Miss Violet Vannoy and Mrs. Dawn Houck, both of Fleetwood. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services will be conducted Thursday morning at 11 a.m. at Badger Funeral Home Chapel in West Jefferson, with the Rev. Nathan Caparolie and the Rev. Dean Watson officiating. Burial will follow in Gap Creek Cemetery in Deep Gap.

The family will receive friends this evening (Wednesday) from 7-9 p.m. at Badger Funeral Home in West Jefferson.

Badger Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Edna Mae Walker Bollinger

Mrs. Edna Mae Walker Bollinger, 76, of Hickory, N.C., died July 21, 2005, at Lutheran Home West.

She was born Dec. 7, 1928, in Catawba County, to the late Jefferson Walker and Josephine Brown Walker.

She was a member of Penelope Baptist Church and was employed in the office at  Century Furniture. She was a very loving person to her husband, family and friends.

Survivors include her husband, Paul Bud Bollinger; four sisters, Rachel Decker and Mary Lou Decker, both of Hildebran; Myrtle Dale of Morganton; and Eleanor Shook of Hickory; one brother, Atwell Walker of Charlotte; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Jerry and Lloyd Sipe of Hickory; and a sister-in-law, Helen Black. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Hershel Walker; and a sister, Kathleen Christopher.

Services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. at Penelope Baptist Church, with the Rev. Larry McCracken officiating. Burial followed in Catawba Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to The Air Condition Fund, Penelope Baptist Church, 3310 Main Avenue, N.W., Hickory, N.C. 28601; or memorials to Palliative Care Hospice of Burke County, 1729 Enon Rd., Valdese, N.C. 28690.

Marion Margaret Gaffney

Mrs. Marion Margaret Gaffney, 96, of Silver Spring, Md., wife of the late John Patrick Gaffney, died Thursday, July 21, 2005, at Brooke Grove Nursing Home in Sandy Ridge, Md.

She was born in Scranton, Pa., to the late Martin and Margaret Cullen Gallagher.

Mrs. Gaffney attended Powell Business School and worked at Scranton Dry Goods and Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company before moving to Washington, D.C. in 1939. There she worked initially for the Railroad Retirement Board and the U.S. Treasury Department until 1945.

From 1963 until 1976 she worked for the Prince George County School System in Mount Rainier, Md. After becoming a member of the Leisure World Retirement Community in Silver Spring, she was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Smith and husband, Kent, of Olney, Md. and Catherine G. Pinson of Boone; two grandsons, Brian Higgins and wife, Laura, and Michael J. Higgins and wife, Anthea; one great-grandson, Sean Higgins; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial was conducted this morning (Monday) at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Grace Church in Silver Spring, officiated by the Rev. Peter J. Sweeney. Burial followed in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring.

Memorial contributions may be made to Children’s Inn at NIH, 7 West Drive, Bethesda, Md. 20814.

Lonnie Curtis Harrison

Mr. Lonnie Curtis Harrison, 93, of Richland Road, Lenoir, died Friday, July 22, 2005, at his residence.

He was born June 10, 1912 in Watauga County, to the late Shuford E. and Sarah Bradshaw Harrison.

Mr. Harrison was a self-employed farmer, a member of The Grange and Farm Bureau. He was a former Forest Warden, and Conservationist. He was awarded a distinguished member certificate of the Alumni Body at Rutherford College by the President and Trustees at Brevard College. He was a member of Unity Baptist Church and was a former church clerk at Bethany Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Mrs. Julia Ella Ford Harrison; two sons, Eric Anthony Harrison of Granite Falls and Shuford Edward Harrison of Wilkesboro; three daughters, Ms. Adrian Elaine Harrison of Hickory, Mrs. Joe (Evelyn Annette) Snyder of Hudson and Mrs. Gwyn (A. Elizabeth) Icenhour of Lenoir; a sistrer, Mrs. Ruby Day of Blowing Rock; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Aleda Eva Harrison Burress; one grandson, Curtis Snyder; a brother, Millard Harrison; and three sisters, Mrs. Dosia Harrison Bolick, Mrs. Vinia Harrison Hodge and Mrs. Annie Harrison Goins.

Services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Hugh Kincaid, the Rev. Paul Dula, and the Rev. Billy Greene officiating. Interment followed at Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care, 902 Kirkwood Street, Lenoir, N.C. 28645; Unity Baptist Church, 3025 Blowing Rock Blvd., Lenoir, N.C. 28645; or to Bethany Baptist Church, 6777 Richland Road, Lenoir, N.C. 28645.
