Faye Weaver Bolick
Mrs. Ella Faye Weaver Bolick, 85, of 8775 Fairgrounds Road, Bel Alton, Md., a native and former resident of Watauga County, died Saturday, July 16, 2005, in Hampshire, Ill.
She was born May 11, 1920, in Blowing Rock, to the late Thomas Asbury and Malinda Elizabeth Ward Weaver.
Mrs. Bolick was a graduate of Blowing Rock High School and a former hairdresser and homemaker. She was a member of First Baptist Church in La Plata, Md. and G.F.W.C. Charles County Woman’s Club and a charter member of La Plata Lioness. She was a former member of Three Forks Baptist Church in Boone.
Survivors include two daughters, Mildred Bolick Havrilla and husband, Andrew, of La Plata, Md., Judy Bolick Magura and husband, James, of Hampshire, Ill.; six grandchildren, Andrew Victor Havrilla, II and wife, Stacey, Elizabeth Faye Havrilla and Andrea Elizabeth Havrilla, all of La Plata, Md.; Joseph Magura of Raleigh; Jason Magura of Asheville; and Julie Rene Magura of Syracuse, New York; three great-grandchildren, Kelly Rene Havrilla, Joseph Clyde Bolick Havrilla and Adam Quicktree Havrilla, all of La Plata, Md.; two sisters, Anna Mae Herrington of Perry, Fla., and Dorothea Cannon and husband, Douglas, of Seattle, Wash. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends in the Boone and Blowing Rock areas.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Clyde Bolick; and a sister, Ruth Arlene Weaver.
Services will be conducted Saturday morning at 11:00 o'clock at Three Forks Baptist Church, with the Rec. Homer F. Greene officiating. Burial will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens in Boone.
The family will receive friends this evening (Friday) from 7-8:30 p.m. at Hampton Funeral Service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, a Hospice Unit or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Edward James Hayes
Mr. Edward James Hayes, 71, of Adams Road, Mountain City, Tenn., died Wednesday evening, July 20, 2005, at the Johnson City Medical Center in Tennessee.
He was born Sept. 12, 1933 in Watauga County, a son of Lloyd Lafayette and Nell Edmisten Hayes.
Mr. Hayes was a member of Greenway Baptist Church in Boone. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean Conflict. For more than 20 years he served as a volunteer fireman for the Boone Fire Department and served as a Disaster Relief Volunteer with the Baptist Men and with Samaritans Purse. Mr. Hayes was a retired self-employed carpenter.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Hodges Hayes; three daughters, Teresa Greene and husband, Keith, of Boone, Dara Kisselburg and husband, Eric, of Boiling Springs and Cynthia Church and husband, Ricky, of Vilas; one son, Humphrey Hayes and wife, Sherry, of Zionville; two granddaughters, Heather Michelle and Laura Megan Kisselburg; and four grandsons, Tyler Gray Greene, Seth, Lucas and Zachary Church; two sisters, Margaret Norris and husband, Kenneth, and Ruby Carson and husband, Don; and one brother, Farthing Hayes and wife, Mary, all of Boone.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Helen.
Services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 4 o’clock at Greenway Baptist Church, officiated by Dr. David Luster and the Rev. Harold Bennett. Graveside services will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens, officiated by the Rev. Paxton Parrish.

Marlene Isaacs Shull
Mrs. Marlene Isaacs Shull, 79, of U.S. 321 North, Vilas, died Thursday morning, July 21, 2005, at Johnson City Medical Center.
She was born March 2, 1926 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Conley and Nora Tester Isaacs.
Mrs. Shull was an active member of Willow Valley Baptist Church, where she was a former Sunday School teacher and a member of the choir. She was retired from TRW.
Survivors include her husband, Simon Shull; one daughter, Tammy Ward and husband, Keith; one grandson, Travis Ward, all of Vilas; and one sister, Bertha Simcox and husband, Marndeen, of Mountain City, Tenn.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Ivalee Shell, Floy Holbrook, Mabel Brown, and Myrtle Isaacs; five brothers, Rod, Butler, Lloyd, Raleigh, and Ray Isaacs; and two infant sisters.
Services will be conducted Sunday morning at 11 o’clock at Willow Valley Baptist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Ray Greene. Burial will follow in the Willow Valley Baptist Church Cemetery.

Erie Storie Triplett
Mrs. Erie Storie Triplett, 89, of 460 Jake Storie Road, Boone, wife of the late Don M. Triplett, died Tuesday, July 19, 2005, at home.
She was born Nov. 8, 1915, in the Aho community of Watauga County, to the late Jather and Nora Moore Storie.
Mrs. Triplett was a graduate of Blowing Rock High School and attended Appalachian State Teachers College. She was a homemaker and a member of Friendship United Methodist Church.
Survivors include four sons, Steve Triplett and wife, Jenny, of Mount Airy; Harold Triplett of Hampstead; J.C. Triplett and wife, Caren, of Clayton; and Melvin Triplett of the home; five daughters, Coleen Bush of North Wilkesboro; Marlene “Molly” Bentley and husband, Charles, of Wingate; Arlene Frye and husband, Jim, of Manassas, Va.; Kathleen Triplett of the home; and Eleanor Holford of Murphy; one sister, Pearl Day and husband, Virgil; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Lois Triplett, all of Boone; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a number of nieces and nephews; and her caregivers, Regina Derr and Cathy Purcell.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Allen Triplett and Kenneth Triplett; three grandchildren, Cathy Kitchen, Angie Kilby and Hugh Kilby; a sister, Mrs. Illa Yates; and two brothers, Conley Storie and Charlie Storie.
Services were conducted this morning (Friday) at 11 a.m. at Friendship United Methodist Church, officiated by the Rev. Mike Howard. Burial followed in the Moore Family Cemetery in Blowing Rock.

Carolyn Cox Anderson
Mrs. Carolyn Cox Anderson, 96, of 894 Fairway Drive, Boone, a former resident of Greensboro and Lansing, Mich., died Monday, July 18, 2005, at Glenbridge Health Care in Boone.
She was born May 11, 1909, in Catherine Lake, Onslow County, to the late Romulus and Denie Bryan Cox.
Mrs. Anderson moved to Sneads Ferry with her mother, brother and sister when she was a child, to live with a special uncle and aunt, Dr. Lorenzo “Cooter” Bryan and Frances Bryan. She graduated from high school in Mars Hill, after which she enrolled in the School of Pharmacy at UNC-Chapel Hill. She graduated in 1930 and was one of the first female pharmacists in North Carolina. Her first job was with Bobbitt’s Pharmacy in Winston-Salem. After three years, she was wooed by the owners of McDuffie-Eubanks Pharmacy in Greensboro, where she worked until she and her husband moved to Lansing, Mich., in 1943.
She became involved in many organizations as a volunteer, including Sparrow Hospital Auxiliary & Escorts, St. Lawrence Hospital Assissium League, March of Dimes and the Legal Aid Society. Mrs. Anderson was actively involved in her children’s school activities, serving as a scout leader, on P.T.A. committees and as a “room mother” for many years.
She was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church in Lansing. Developing friendships through her kind, sweet, generous spirit, she enjoyed life and accepted all circumstances with peace and gratitude.
Retirement brought them back to Greensboro where they enjoyed many happy years with wonderful neighbors and relatives, sharing garden vegetables, taking care of each other and nurturing their grandchildren. For the past year and a half, the shining star in her life has been her great-grandson, Jackson Allen Roper. She will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew her.
Survivors include two daughters, Cynthia "Cindy" Anderson Taylor and husband, Tom, of Boone and Diana Anderson Wieczorek of Okemos, Mich.; her former son-in-law, Tom Wieczoreck of Grand Ledge, Mich.; two granddaughters, Jodie Taylor Roper and husband, Jake, of Concord and Heather Wieczorek Hudenko and husband, Bill, of Ithaca, New York; two grandsons, Kevin Taylor and wife, Brandi, of Mocksville and Bryan Wieczorek and his fiance, Erin, of Lansing, Mich.; one great-grandson, Jackson Roper of Concord; one sister, Charlotte Cox Ross of Charlottesville, Va.; and four sisters-in-law, Louise Anderson Lowe and husband, Fred, of Newport News, Va., Sarah Anderson King and husband, Jack, of Greensboro; Jean Anderson Moore and husband, Bob, of Charlotte; and Mrs. Irene Anderson of Eden. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Francis Irving Anderson; a grandson, Christopher Lee Taylor; and a brother, John Franklin Cox.
Graveside services were conducted Tuesday, July 19, at 3 p.m. at Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery in Eden, N.C., officiated by Dr. Ronald L. Bowie of Boone.

Miriam Roberts Toepel
Mrs. Miriam Roberts Toepel, 91, formerly of Hialeah, Fla., and part-time resident of Sugar Grove, N.C., peacefully passed away July 8, 2005, at Northeast Community Hospice in Jacksonville, Fla.
She had been an active member of Miami Friends Meeting in Miami, Fla., and has a life long membership in Plymouth Friends Meeting and Boone, N.C. Friends Meeting.
Mrs. Toepel spent her whole life working and giving to others as an elementary school teacher, a girl scout leader and a community volunteer. In recognition of her exceptional teaching ability, she received the Valley Forge Classroom Teachers Medal in 1959.
After retiring from Dade County School System, Miriam spent Spring through Fall in Boone, N.C. Volunteering was in her blood as she tutored disabled adults at Watauga Opportunities Center and did volunteer work at the Watauga Library. She was always opening her mind to new learning and ideas and was very active with the Senior Scholars program of Appalachian State University, as well as a member of the Boone Book Club. She twice received the Watauga County Volunteer of the Year award for her community service.
She was very vivacious with an enormous range of interests. She was extremely generous with her time and talents. She will truly be missed by all who knew and loved her.
Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth Vino of Jacksonville, Fla. and Louise Stark of Decatur, Ga.; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Stark of Washington, D.C.; and son-in-laws, Douglas Stark of Decatur, Ga. and Louis Vino of Jacksonville, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Walter Charles Toepel; and her grandson, David Neal Stark.
Memorial services will be held at Decatur Presbyterian Church in Decatur, Ga., with burial at Decatur Cemetery at a time to be announced.

Jo Ann Arthurs U’Ren
Mrs. Jo Ann Arthurs U’Ren, 67, of Gastonia, died July 17, 2005, in Flat Rock, N.C.
She was the daughter of the late Hope and Nancy Green Arthurs.
Mrs. U’Ren was a member of Parkwood Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Stacy Newman U’Ren; a daughter, Stacy Ann Wray and husband, Jack, of Asheville, N.C.; a brother, Andy Arthurs of Wilmington, N.C.; two sisters, Betty Green of Greenville, S.C. and Jean Champion of Gastonia, N.C.; and six grandchildren, Katie Convery, Ashley Convery, Matt Convery, Alyce Wray, Nick Wray and Jack Wray, Jr.
Services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. at Founders Chapel of McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia with Father Kenneth of Belmont Abbey officiating.
Interment will follow the service at Gaston Memorial Park.
A visitation will be held from 1:30-2:45 at McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia and following the service at the home of Jean Champion.

Pauline Greene Higgins
Mrs. Pauline Greene Higgins, 77, of Appalachian Brian Estates, Boone, died Tuesday morning, July 12, 2005.
She was born in Watauga County, August 19, 1927, a daughter of the late Benjamin Burgin and Bessie Barnes Greene.
Mrs. Higgins was retired from New River Light and Power where she had worked as a bookkeeper. She was a member of Meat Camp Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Bobby Higgins and wife, Laura, and Jimmy Higgins and wife, Jane, all of Boone; eight grandchildren, Holly Higgins Barker and husband, Jordan, and Rebecca Higgins Bullins and husband, Strother, all of Winston-Salem; Annette Higgins Laukaitis and husband, Ted, of Concord, Jackie Higgins O’Neil and husband, Paul, of Lumberton, N.C., Jennie Higgins Gadzia and husband, Joe, and Laura Olivia Higgins, all of Lawrence, Kansas; Robert Bruce Higgins II and wife, Nicole, and Chad Burgin Higgins, all of Boone; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Rachel Klutz and Martha Calloway and husband, C.P., all of Boone; and one brother, Warren Greene of Boone.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Estella Greene Shenk and Polly Greene Coffey.
Services were conducted Thursday evening at 7 o’clock at Boone United Methodist Church with Dr. George Naff and the Rev. Harold Bennett officiating. Graveside services and entombment followed Friday morning at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens Mausoleum.

Paul Harold Johnson
Paul Harold Johnson, age 66, of 176 Claude Johnson Lane, Mountain City, Tenn., passed away on Monday, July 11, 2005. 
He was born in Johnson County, Tenn. on June 1, 1939 to the late Claude and Lillian Price Johnson.
Mr. Johnson was a member of the Sutherland Baptist Church of Creston. He loved spending time with his family and friends and playing the guitar.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Katie Sluder Johnson; one daughter, Linda Johnson Canter and husband, Carter, of Creston; two granddaughters, Allison Canter and Heather Canter, both of West Jefferson; four brothers, Thomas Johnson of Lenoir, Earl Johnson, Jim Johnson and Claude Johnson Jr., all of Mountain City, Tenn.; five sisters, Carolyn Rash of Todd, Helen Rash of Creston, Geneva Woodard of Mountain City, Tenn., Sue Carroll of Hickory and Mary Carroll of Conover; special sister-in-law, Vada Lewis of Todd; special family friend, Bettie Moose; and a host of other friends. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by three sisters.
Funeral services for Paul H. Johnson were conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, July 15, from the Hux-Tetrick Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charles McCoy and the Rev. Denton Hart officiating. Graveside services and interment followed in the Sunset Memorial Park.
