Hobert Paul “Sonny” Hughes
Mr. Hobert Paul “Sonny” Hughes, 62, of Jerry’s Creek Road, Newland, died Tuesday evening, July 12, 2005, at his home.
He was born Nov. 30, 1942 in Avery County, a son of Hobert D. and Zona Mae Hughes.
Mr. Hughes attended the Avery County Revival Center. He was retired from Blue Ridge Wood Products.
Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Greene Hughes; one son, Mark Stout and his wife, Sherry, of Jerry’s Creek Road, Newland; five sisters, Jean Oakes and husband, Von, of Jerry’s Creek Road, Cathy Holiman and husband, Ivan, of Roaring Creek, Mildred Stafford and husband, Bill, of Crab Orchard Road, Vickie Young and husband, Roger, of Elk Park, and Alice Hughes of Jerry’s Creek Road; one brother, Lester Hughes and wife, Evelyn, of Jerry’s Creek Road, Newland.
Services were conducted Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Roaring Creek Free Will Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, officiated by the Rev. Willard Pless, the Rev. Robert Beers and the Rev. Steve Turbyfill. The family received friends Thursday afternoon from 12:30-2 p.m., prior to the services, at the church fellowship hall. Burial followed in the Hughes Cemetery.

Ted E. Jones
Mr. Teddy Eugene “Ted” Jones, 70, of Lenoir, a native and resident of Watauga County, died Monday, July 4, 2005, at Kindred Care Hospital in Greensboro.
He was born Jan. 19, 1935, in Boone, to the late William Harrison “Will” Jones and Frances Arnold Jones.
Mr. Jones was a graduate of Appalachian High School and retired from Broyhill Furniture Company in Lenoir. He was a member of Meat Camp Baptist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Kathy Michelle Smith and husband, Harvey, of Stockton Springs, Maine and Patty Edwards and husband, Rocky, of Bakersville; one son, Dr. Perry Jones and wife, Shirlene, of High Point; seven sisters, Mrs. Wilma Wilson, Gladys Greene and husband, Burl, Ms. Betty Austin, Wanda Proffitt and husband, Gary, and Sherry Pennell and husband, Teddy, all of Boone, Shirley Salas and husband, Boni, of Los Angeles, Calif. and Peggy Vannoy and husband, James, of Vero Beach, Fla.; one brother, Roy Jones and wife, Betty, of Boone. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Louise Ragan; and a brother, Harold Jones.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Pauline Greene Higgins
Mrs. Pauline Greene Higgins, 77, of Appalachian Brian Estates, Boone, died Tuesday morning, July 12, 2005.
She was born in Watauga County, August 19, 1927, a daughter of the late Benjamin Bruce and Bessie Barnes Greene.
Mrs. Higgins was retired from New River Light and Power where she had worked as a bookkeeper. She was a member of Meat Camp Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Bobby Higgins and wife, Laura, and Jimmy Higgins and wife, Jane, all of Boone; eight grandchildren, Holly Higgins Barker and husband, Jordan, and Rebecca Higgins and husband, Strother, all of Winston-Salem; Annette Higgins Laukaitis and husband, Ted, of Concord, Jackie Higgins O’Neil and husband, Paul, of Lumberton, N.C., Jennie Higgins Gadzia and husband, Joe, and Laura Olivia Higgins, all of Lawrence, Kansas; Robert Bruce Higgins II and wife, Nicole, and Chad Burgin Higgins, all of Boone; two sisters, Rachel Klutz and Martha Calloway and husband, C.P., all of Boone; and one brother, Warren Greene of Boone.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Estella Greene Shenk and Polly Greene Coffey.
Services will be conducted Thursday evening at 7 o’clock at Boone United Methodist Church. Officiating will be Dr. George Naff and the Rev. Harold Bennett. The family will receive friends prior the service Thursday evening at Boone United Methodist Church from 5:30-7 p.m. At other times the family will be at the home of Bobby and Laura Higgins, Harrison Road, Boone.
Graveside services and entombment will be conducted Friday morning at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens Mausoleum.

Christine Hovis Holcomb
Mrs. Christine Hovis Holcomb, 78, of Wiggins Rd., Mooresville, N.C., died Monday, July 11, 2005, at Brian Center Health & Retirement in Mooresville.
She was born August 6, 1926, in Gaston County, a daughter of the late George and Connie Abernethey Hovis.
Mrs. Holcomb was co-owner/operator, with her husband, of A&C Sanitation of Charlotte, N.C. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church in Mooresville, N.C., where she formerly served as secretary of the Sunshine Club and the Little Women Sunday School class. She was also a member of the choir. She was a former member of Greenway Baptist Church in Boone, N.C., Thrift Baptist Church and Shady Brook Baptist Church, both of Charlotte, N.C., and Mt. Paran Baptist Church, Blacksburg, S.C. She was also a volunteer for many years at Hebron Colony in Boone, N.C.
Survivors include her husband, James T. “Andy” Holcomb, whom she married Nov. 24, 1944; daughter, Carol Leathers and husband, Van, of Mooresville, N.C.; grandchildren, Dusty Dellinger and wife, Vanessa, and Candee Davis; great-grandchildren, Hunter Davis, Luke Davis, Jared Davis, Josh Dellinger and Gracie Dellinger; and favorite nephew and niece, Donald Bynum and Judy Casey.
She was precedcd in death by sisters, “Bill” Bynum and Viola Mingus.
Services will be conducted Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. at Southside Baptist Church in Mooresville, with Dr. D. Steven Gouge and the Rev. Hal D. Greene officiating. She will lie in state at the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn West, Charlotte, N.C.

Rosena Williams Kreahling
Mrs. Rosena Williams Kreahling, 90, of 537 Clay Hodges Road, Boone, wife of the late William Charles Kreahling II, died Monday morning, July 11, 2005, at Watauga Medical Center.
She was born April 2, 1915, in Braddock, Allegheny County, Pa., to the late Thomas and Mary Catherine McDougald Williams. Mrs. Kreahling was a homemaker and attended St. Elizabeth Catholic Church since moving to Boone.
Survivors include two sons, William C. “Bill” Kreahling III and wife, Mary, of Boone and Ray Kreahling and wife, Rita, of Sarasota, Fla.; four daughters, Jean Moore and husband, Don, of Greensburg, Pa., Mary Rauhecker and husband, Lew, of Pittsburg, Pa., Mrs. Janet Sweitzer of Marietta, Ga., and Mrs. Terri McCrosson of Murphy, N.C.; one nephew, Fred Williams of Brandenton, Fla. She is also survived by 22 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in Pennsylvania. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Church Cemetery in North Versailles, Pa.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 332 North Lauderdale Street, Memphis, Tenn. 38105.

Georgia Dishman Lawrence
Mrs. Georgia Etta Dishman Lawrence, 88, of Trade, Tenn., died Monday, July 4, 2005, at the Mountain City Medical Center.
She was born August 18, 1916, to the late Spencer and Maggie Smitherman Dishman.
Mrs. Lawrence was a homemaker and a member of Trade United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her son, Thomas Lynn Lawrence of Trade, Tenn.; three sisters, Dora Eggers and Dare Brown of Zionville, and Helen Dotson of Boone; one brother, Mack Dishman of Zionville; two aunts, Sarah Jane “Girlie” Palmer of Boone, Mary Ann Stamps of Akron, Ohio; and one sister-in-law, Ruth Oliver, of Trade, Tenn. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Wright Lawrence; and one brother, Glenn Dishman.
Services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Trade United Methodist Church, officiated by the Rev. LArry Rye and the Rev. Doug Ranshaw. Burial followed in the Trade United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Timothy Joseph McKiernan
Mr. Timothy Joseph McKiernan, 47, of 195 Jaynes Road, Apt. 17, Newland, N.C., died Thursday, July 7, 2005, at his residence.
He was born July 25, 1957, in Chicago, Ill., to Kathryn Pipp McKiernan and the late David Thomas McKiernan.
Mr. McKiernan was a former chef at the Holiday Inn restaurant in Sanford, Fla. He was of the Catholic faith.
Survivors include three sons, Michael McKiernan, U.S. Air Force, Boulder Creek, Calif., Joey McKiernan and Tommy McKiernan, both of Jefferson; his former wife, Kim Meyers McKiernan, of Jefferson; his mother, Mrs. Kathryn McKiernan, of De Bary, Fla.; two sisters, Debbie Pall and Patti Lasziac and husband, Anthony; and one brother, David T. McKiernan, Jr., all of Deltona, Fla.; his former father-in-law and mother-in-law, Charles and Nancy Meyers; and two former sisters-in-law, Kathy Meyers and Kelly Meyers, all of Mountain City, Tenn.; and a former brother-in-law, Kurt Meyers and wife, Christine, of Melbourne, Fla. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
A memorial Mass will be conducted Friday, July 15, at St. Ann Roman Catholic Church in De Bary, Fla. Burial will be in Deltona Memorial Gardens in Deltona, Fla.

Ray Dickey Ollis
Mr. Ray Dickey Ollis, 80, of 366 Chestnut Drive, Blowing Rock, and a former resident of Nebo, died Saturday night, July 9, 2005 at the Davant Extended Care Facility.
He was born in Burke County, Sept. 20, 1924, a son of the late Stancil David and Addie Franklin Ollis.
Mr. Ollis was retired from A&P Grocery Store, where he worked in the warehouse. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, and a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Raleigh.
Survivors include two sisters, Dorothy “Tot” Cook and husband, J.D., of Boone, and Anne Denton of Morganton; a number of nieces and nephews, including John Cook and wife, Carol; and a great-nephew, Daniel Cook, all of Boone.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Stancil D. and Addie Franklin Ollis; his step-mother, Ailene Ollis; three sisters, Lena Mace, Georgia Health, and Margaret Ramsey; and four brothers, Allen, Junior, Colin and Bill Ollis.
Services will be private.

Eddus Shomaker VonCannon
Mrs. Eddus Shomaker VonCannon, 86, of the Sloop Care Center, Newland, formerly of Banner Elk, died Monday, July 11, 2005, at the Life Care Center in Banner Elk.
A native of Avery County, she was a daughter of the late James and Jette Gwaltney Shomaker.
Mrs. VonCannon was a hairdresser and had worked for Lees-McRae College and Cannon Memorial Hospital and was a member of the Banner Elk Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include a granddaughter, Katie VonC annon of Nashville, Tenn.; a brother, James Shomaker of Banner Elk; and a host of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Chester “Ted” VonCannon; a son, Fred VonCannon; a daughter-in-law, Jerri VonCannon; and a grandson, Tripp VonCannon.
Services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Mount Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Ken Chivers, the Rev. O’Dell Smith and the Rev. George Wright officiating. Interment will follow in the Mount Calvary Cemetery. She will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the services.

Mrs. Louise Norris Smith
Mrs. Louise Norris Smith, 74, of Fairview Heights, Boone, died Friday evening, July 8, 2005 at the Roan Highlands Nursing Center in Roan Mountain, Tenn.
She was born Oct. 5, 1930 in Watauga County, a daughter of Norman Cicero and Francis Matilda Moretz Norris.
Mrs. Smith was a homemaker and attended Howard’s Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include five daughters, Sharon Young of Mt. Airy, Tanya Ward of Phoenix, Ariz., Cheryl Jones and husband, Mike, and Heidi Smith, all of Todd; and Deborah Keller and husband, Ed, of Boone; two sons, Stephen Smith and wife, Karen, of Bremerton, Wash. and Robert Smith and wife, Shellie, of Todd; seven granddaughters, Emily Jones of Todd, Leslie Miller of West Palm Beach, Fla., Jessica Miller of Boone, Sierra and Chelsea Smith, both of Todd, Sarah Smith of Vilas, and Megan Smith of Bremerton, Wash.; six grandsons, Joseph Toliver of Mt. Airy, Brandon Smith of Phoenix, Ariz., Michael Smith of Todd, Zachary Smith of Bremerton, Wash., and Aaron and Justin Winebarger, both of Todd; three great-grandchildren; three brothers, David Norris and wife, Juanita, of Deep Gap, Elwin Norris and wife, Leonda of Chicago, Ill., and John Norris and wife, Nancy, of Detroit, Mich.; and three sisters, Carolyn Kitts of Fayetteville, Ann Berger and husband, Lee, of Shelby and Ruth Wilcox and husband, Conley, of Boone.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Ray Smith; one daughter, Rebekah Jean Smith; three sisters, Emily Norris, Mary Price and Pearl Kerr; one brother, Ralph Norris; and her stepmother, Lily Yount Norris.
Services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Howard’s Creek Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Ben Cox and the Rev. Joe London. The body will lie in state at the church from 1-2 p.m. Burial will follow in the Old Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7-8:30 at the Austin and Barnes Funeral Home.
