Eugene E. Fancher
Mr. Eugene E. Fancher, 80, of Newport, Tenn., died Wednesday, June 29, 2005, at Baptist Hospital of East Tennessee.
He was a member of the First Methodist Church and a member of the church choir. He was also a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Dean Fancher; sons and daughters-in-law, Ray and Brenda Fancher of Newport, Tenn., Terry and Beth Fancher of Newport, Tenn., Jeff and Velva Fancher of Vilas, N.C., and Houston and Cathy Fancher of Boone, N.C.; step-brother, Paul Hammond, Jr. and his wife, Lora, of White Pine, Tenn.; grandchildren, Josh, Rayanne, Megan, Malerie, Murphy, Morgan, Hayden and Ethan; and one great-grandchild, Steele.
Services will be conducted Friday evening at 8 p.m. in Manes Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Freddrick Long officiating. Burial will be held Saturday morning at 11 a.m. in Resthaven Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Friday evening at Manes Funeral Home, prior to the funeral services.

William Christian “Bill” Schlichting, Jr.
Mr. William Christian “Bill” Schlichting, Jr., 63, of Odes Wilson Road, Zionville, died Tuesday night, June 28, 2005, at home.
He was born in Kings County, New York, Oct. 3, 1941, a son of the late William Christian and Myrtle Nielsen Schlichting.
Mr. Schlichting graduated from Columbia College of Columbia, New York, with a BA in Government, and was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity. He was a resident of Watauga County for the past 30 years; was a member of Grace Lutheran Church; served as a member of the Watauga County High School Advisory Board for five years; and was a building contractor.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Schlichting; three sons, Erik Kristian Schlichting and wife, Vickie, of Conover, Brian Scott Schlichting and wife, Jeanne, of Morganton, and Kurt Schlichting and special friend, Ingrid Hayes, of Zionville; one granddaughter, Kristian Schlichting of Conover; two sisters, Kristie Junior and Lori Vintaloro and husband, Tom, all of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Richard Schlichting.
Services will be conducted Friday evening at 6 o’clock at Grace Lutheran Church. Officiating will be Pastor Becca Pivetta. The family will receive friends Friday afternoon prior to the service from 4:30-6 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church.
Graveside services and burial will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Woodlawn Cemetery in Blowing Rock, officiated by Pastor Becca Pivetta.

Eleaner Hannah “Lena” Storie
Mrs. Eleaner Hannah “Lena” Storie, 93, of 1811 Aho Road, Boone, wife of the late Carnie H. Storie, died Wednesday morning, June 29, 2005.
She was born Nov. 26, 1911, in Boone, Watauga County, to the late William Calvin and Betty Harrison Storie.
Mrs. Storie was a homemaker and retired from the former Carolina Pharmacy in 1980, after 35 years of service as a server and cook. She was a member of Laurel Fork Baptist Church where she sang in the original “singing class” and choir.
Survivors include four daughters, Suma Aldridge and husband, Jay, Tommie Hampton and husband, Barney, and Ms. Melba Watson, all of Boone; and Edith Miller and husband, Ralph, of North Wilkesboro; two sons, Dwight Story and wife, Sally, of High Point and Keith Story of Easley, S.C.; six granddaughters, Rita Priddy and husband, Kent; Kathy Cottrell and husband, David, and Anna Maria Wallace and husband, Darren, all of Boone; Tina Gray and husband, Robert, of Burlington; Amy Burns and husband, John, of Archdale and Cynthia Tobin and husband, Keith, of Thomasville; four grandsons, Gregg Hampton and wife, Donna, and Jeff Aldridge, all of Boone; Robert Story and friend, Stephanie, of Jensen Beach, Fla. and David Miller of North Wilkesboro; 15 great-grandchildren, Melissa Mock and husband, Jon; Wes Priddy and wife, Jackie; Molly Zimmer and husband, Daniel; Betsy and Sam Cottrell; Anna and Seth Walsh; Laura and Carol Burns; Tyler and Cory Tobin; Stephanie, Samantha and Caroline Hampton and Carnie Wallace; five great-great-grandchildren, Lily, Jay and Bonnie Mock and Clara and Will Priddy; one sister, Mrs. Angeline Edmisten of Boone; and a brother-in-law, Coman Storie, of Blowing Rock. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews and a special friend and caregiver, Effie Hampton, of Boone.
She was preceded in death by eight brothers, Ralph, Grayson, Jesse, Ronald, Carson, Alvin, Spencer and Olin Storie; and a daughter-in-law, Barbara Story.
Services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Laurel Fork Baptist Church. The body will lie in state at the church from 1-2 p.m. Officiating will be Dr. Daniel Featherstone, the Rev. Gordon Noble and the Rev. Dean Coffey. Burial will follow in the Laurel Fork Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends this evening (Friday) from 7-9 p.m. at Hampton Funeral Service. At other times, friends may call at the Storie residence.

Susie Louise Walser Underwood
Mrs. Susie Louise Walser Underwood, 89, of Vilas, a former resident of Blowing Rock, wife of the late Cline Underwood, died Thursday morning, June 30, 2005, at her residence.
Survivors include one son, Carl Underwood and wife, Michelle, of Vilas; two grandchildren, Paula Wilcox and husband, Tom, and Robbie Underwood, all of Blowing Rock; three great-grandchildren, Dustin Wilcox, Liley Widener and Lanie Widener; one step-granddaughter, Madison Winebarger; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Robert and Dovie Earp Walser; two brothers, John and Paul Walser; and two sisters, Mrs. Lois Greene and Mrs. Grace Greene.

James Madison Monroe
Mr. James Madison Monroe, 91, formerly of Salisbury, N.C., died Monday, June 27, 2005, at Five Oaks Manor in Concord, N.C., where he had been a resident for three years.
He was born May 4, 1914 in Salisbury to the late Reid Stafford Monroe and Sallie Marie Shoaf.
Mr. Monroe graduated from Boyden High School in 1932 where he was class president each year and student body president his senior year. He was presented the Rotary Service CUp for his leadership. He was a graduate of Salisbury Business College and International Correspondence School of Textiles.
Mr. Monroe, regarded as one of Salisbury’s best amateur golfers, won the American Legion Country Club Tournament five consecutive times beginning at age sixteen. He won numerous local and area golf tournaments. He was one of the first area golfers to break 30 for nine holes, scoring a 28 at McCanless Golf Club where he still holds the course record of 60. He founded the popular Rowan County Amateur Tournament held annually at Corbin Hills. In 1997, Corbin Hills Golf Club’s Memorial Tournament committee placed a permanent marker on the course to honor Mr. Monroe for making significant contributions to the game of golf in Rowan County.
During World War II, Mr. Monroe served in the U.S. Army with the 83rd Infantry Thunderbolt Division. He was chosen to play on Gen. George Patton’s Third Army golf team and qualified to participate in the United States Forces European Theater Golf Championship at the St. Cloud Country Club in Paris, France.
He served as superintendent of Cannon Mills Plant 7, Salisbury until 1971 where he had been employed since 1934. He was an early advocate for the textile firm’s safety program and served as president of the Southern Piedmont Safety Council. Mr. Monroe retired from the North Carolina State Department of Labor.
His civic activities included serving on the board of directors at the Kannapolis Country Club, and as a member of the Salisbury Chamber of Commerce and the Industrial Management Club of Salisbury.
Mr. Monroe was a life-long member of First Presbyterian Church, Salisbury, where he was a member of the board of deacons, served as president of the men of the church and was secretary of the Everyman’s Bible Class.
Survivors include a son, James M. Monroe, Jr. and wife, Dorothy, of Concord; a daughter, Linda Monroe Steen and husband, Kemp, of Blowing Rock; a brother, Kenneth E. Monroe of Salisbury, N.C.; grandson, Jeffrey Deal Monroe of Concord; granddaughters, Meredith Monroe Patton of Beech Mountain, Laura Marie Steen and Lana Teresa Steen of Blowing Rock; and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by step-daughters, Janice Mull and husband, Gary, of Statesville, N.C. and Linda Altman and husband, Eddie, of Lexington, S.C. and their families.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Cecil Monroe (Pete); and step-brother, William Reid Monroe; the mother of his children, Louise Deal Monroe; and by his second wife, Daisy Teague Monroe.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m. in the Summersett Chapel, followed by burial at 2 p.m. in the U.S. National Cemetery, Statesville Boulevard location with military honors by the Rowan County Veterans Council. The family will receive friends at noon, prior to the memorial service.

Carson Watson
Mr. Carson Watson, 85, of Sheely Road, Lenoir, N.C., died Sunday, June 26, 2005, at Gateway Nursing Center.
He was born August 5, 1919, in Watauga County, to the late Avery and Cora Watson Watson.
Mr. Watson was a retired furniture worker and was a member of East Flat Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Caroleen Suddreth Watson; two sons, Charles Edward Watson and wife, Paula, of Lehigh Acres, Fla. and Michael Douglas Watson of Morganton, N.C.; nine daughters, Lola W. Aiken and husband, Barry, of Lenoir, N.C., Joann W. Lutz and husband, Melvin, of Boiling Springs, N.C., Carla W. Hampton of Lenoir, N.C., Phyllis W. Nellis, Debra W. Ammons and husband, Glenn, and Elaine W. Woodruff and husband, Carroll, all of Taylorsville, N.C.; and Carol W. Worthen of Leesburg, Va.; Cathy W. Paul and Beverly W. Shook and husband, Steve, all of Lenoir, N.C.; 17 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Joyce Watson of Lenoir.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Larry S. Watson; two brothers, and three sisters.
Services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. at East Flat Baptist Church, with Dr. Claude B. Suddreth officiating. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m., prior to the services. Burial will follow in the Kincaid Cemetery.

Eleanore Mae Wright Manley
Mrs. Eleanore Mae Wright Manley, 73, of Leatherwood Road, Banner Elk, died Thursday evening, June 23, 2005, at home.
She was born in Goshen, New York, May 23, 1932, a daughter of the late Stuart Leroy and Frances Helene Wright.
Mrs. Manley was a member and assistant music director at Holy Cross Episcopal Church. She was an accomplished pianist, and had worked at Appalachian State University for the past 11 years, accompanying various students and artists.
Survivors include her children, Catherine E. Manley of Des Moines, Iowa, Nathaniel E. and Beverly Manley of Cookeville, Tenn., Ronald R. and Ola Manley, Jr. of Manlius, New York; eight grandchildren, Ronald R. Manley, III, Evelyn E. Manley, Andrew E. Manley, Jon Fagan, Ryan Fagan, Erik N. Brown, Krystal L. Brown and Luke J. Manley; two sisters, Nancy H. Wright and Evelyn S. Wright; one brother, Stuart L. Wright; her former husband, Ronald R. Manley; and a sister-in-law, Marilyn P. Lesser.

Betty Main Moody
Mrs. Betty Carolyn Main Moody, 61, of 5669 Silverbell Lane, Granite Falls, a former resident of Vilas, died Thursday, June 23, 2005, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital in Lenoir.
She was born May 1, 1944, in Tamarack, Watauga County, to the late Wise and Florence Miller Main.
Mrs. Moody was a graduate of Cove Creek High School and a homemaker. She was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include her husband, Norman Nelson Moody; two sons, Wilbert Nelson “Bert” Moody and wife, Beth, of Hickory and Kevin Todd Moody of Granite Falls; one granddaughter, Alexis Nicole Moody of Hickory; four sisters, Della South and husband, Preston, of Blountville, Tenn., Ella Mae Davis and husband, Kermit, of Mountain City, Tenn., Virginia Rhea and husband, Randall, of Bristol, Tenn. and Georgia Cornett and husband, Bob, of Lenoir; three brothers, Squire Main and wife, Shirley, of Bristol, Tenn., Arlie Main and wife, Rosa, of Trade, Tenn. and Alvin Main and wife, Beth, of Gray, Tenn.; her mother-in-law, Mrs. Sarah Harmon of North Wilkesboro; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Boyd Main; and an infant sister, Elizabeth Main.
Services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Delmar James. Burial followed in the Potter-Main Cemetery in Tamarack.
