Helper dogs assist special needs customers
The Wilcox Emporium in downtown Boone is helping give people a new leash on life. Since 1996, the emporium has hosted a booth for New Life Mobility Assistance Dogs (NLMAD), a non-profit organization that rescues and trains assistance dogs. The dogs are adopted from animal shelters and then trained to help people whose mobility is limited in some way.

Boone Winn-Dixie will close
The “Beef People” are hitting the dusty trail. Yesterday, Winn-Dixie announced its store at 2575 N.C. 105 will soon be closed. “We found out yesterday,” said a local Winn-Dixie store manager, who wished to remain anonymous. “There’s been speculation for months, but it was around 10 o’ clock yesterday when we found out.”

Tweetsie hires firm to plan for possible relocation
CHARLOTTE (AP) — Facing an uncertain future in Blowing Rock, the landmark Tweetsie Railroad theme park has hired two companies to plan for a possible relocation. "Tweetsie's first choice is to continue to operate and welcome visitors in the same location where Tweetsie Railroad has been operating since 1957," park general manager Chris Robbins said Tuesday. "But in the event that our land situation cannot be resolved, we've retained very well-respected and valuable partners to help us make sure the park has options."

Hospital receives $150K grant for ER
Watauga Medical Center received a $150,000 grant from the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust of Winston-Salem to go towards expansion of its emergency department. According to Jerry Moretz, vice president of public relations with Watauga Medical Center (WMC), the hospital applied for the grant in February, and work is expected to begin any day now.
