Carl William Crump

Mr. Carl William Crump, 85, of Collettsville, N.C., died June 14, 2005, at his residence.

He was born May 10, 1920 in Avery County, to the late Theadore Crump and Cansadia Coffey Crump.

Mr. Crump was a member of Maple Grove Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He was  a retired furniture worker and loved to hunt and fish.

Survivors include his wife, Ethel Philyaw Crump; three sons, Ralph Crump of Collettsville, N.C., Roger Crump of Hudson, N.C. and Terry Crump of Lenoir, N.C.; three daughters, Jean Plunk of Hudson, N.C., and Frances Walker and Shirley Crump, both of Lenoir, N.C.; a sister, Margaret Phipps of Lenoir, N.C.; 20 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Roy Crump; six sisters, Edna Whisenant, Analea Whisenant, Louise Philyaw, Minnie Bowen, Mamie Crump, and Kate Jolly; and one grandson, Joe Walker.

Services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Pendry’s Chapel, with the Rev. Floyd Vines, the Rev. Brian Gragg, and the Rev. Boyd Coffey officiating. Burial will follow in the Greene Family Cemetery.

Marian Ward Simpson

Mrs. Marian Ward Simpson, 68, of U.S. Hwy. 321 North, Sugar Grove, died Tuesday morning, June 14, 2005, at Watauga Medical Center.

She was born in Avery County, July 26, 1936, a daughter of the late Rufus Marion and Bessie Ward.

Mrs. Simpson was a member of Perkinsville Baptist Church, and the Cove Creek Preservation and Development Society. She was a homemaker and an antique dealer for a number of years.

Survivors include her husband, Jack Simpson; one daughter, Jacquelyn Simpson Sink and husband, Daryl W. Sink, of Washington, D.C.; one son, James Gregory Simpson and wife, Amanda, of Minneapolis, Minn.; three grandchildren, Daulton, Ansley and Whitley Sink, all of Washington, D.C. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews, including Geraldine Johnson Carroll and husband, Johnny, of Morganton, N.C.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Mark Andrew Simpson; her parents; two sisters, Nell Matheson and Frankie Hodges; and one brother, Thomas Lucky “Cap” Ward.

Services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Perkinsville Baptist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. D. Harold Bennett. The body will lie in state at the church from 1-2 p.m. Burial will follow in the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mattie Carol Swift

Ms. Mattie Carol Swift, born Aug. 31, 1940, in Zionville, N.C., to George and Helen Ford Swift, died June 10, 2005, at Silver Bluff Nursing Home in Canton, N.C.

Ms. Swift was a graduate of Cove Creek High School and was a former manager of H&R Block of Boone.

Survivors include three sons, Jerry Hicks and wife, Margo, of Sugar Grove, N.C., Nelson Hicks and wife, Mercedes, of Kansas City, Mo., and Jonathan Hicks of Clyde, N.C.; and two grandchildren, Sarah and Elias Hicks of Clyde, N.C.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and one sister, Georgia Mast.

A memorial service was conducted June 16, at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church at 7 p.m.

Melba Lovill Tugman

Mrs. Melba Lovill Tugman, 84, of N. Jefferson Avenue, West Jefferson, and a former resident of Boone, died Tuesday evening, June 14, 2005 at home.

She was born in Coshocton, Ohio, July 1, 1920, a daughter of the late James Edward Lovill and Bina Moody Lovill Graham.

Mrs. Tugman was a member of Boone United Methodist Church. She was retired from ASU, where she had worked as the head cashier in the Business Affairs Office for 42 years.

Survivors include one daughter, Kyle Norris of Jefferson; one son, James Earl “Bo” Tugman and wife, B.J., of Boone; three grandchildren, Thomas Ryan Norris and wife, Erin, of Jefferson, Kera Norris Rumfelt and husband, Matthew, of West Jefferson, and Taylor Kyle Tugman of Boone; two great-grandchildren, Emerson and Cole Rumfelt of West Jefferson; one sister, Jimmie Graham Mast of Monmouth Junction, New Jersey; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Earl Tugman; and two sisters, Jennie Lovill Bumgarner and Joan Lovill Tolbert.

Memorial services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating will be the Rev. Lawrence Goodman. Burial will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Ashe County, P.O. Box 421, Jefferson, N.C. 28640.

The family will receive friends Friday afternoon from 1-2 p.m. at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home, one hour prior to the services.

Henry “Hank” Greene

Mr. Henry Lawrence “Hank” Greene, 73, of Mooresville, a former resident of Claremont, died Friday, June 10, 2005 at Genesis Health Care.

He was born August 5, 1931 in Watauga County, to the late Robert W. and Lillie Mae Dishman Greene.

Mr. Greene retired as a Master Sgt. from the U.S. Air Force after 22 years of service. Following retirement, he taught in the automotive department at Catawba Valley Community College. He was owner of Hank’s Auto Repair in Claremont for many years and also worked at Advance Auto Parts in Conover for 10 years.

Survivors include one son, the Rev. Hal David Greene and his wife, Sandra, of Mooresville; two grandchildren, Gloria and Noah, and a special friend, Janice McCoy; four sisters, Lucille Smith of Salisbury, Joyce Coffey of Mountain City, Tenn., Rachel Townsend and Lois Ann Hodges, both of Banner Elk; two brothers, Roy Lee Greene of Davidson and Willis R. Greene of Valdese. He was also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ellen Blaylock Greene.

Services were conducted Tuesday morning at Southside Baptist Church in Mooresville, with Dr. D. Steven Gouge and Dr. Ed Yount officiating. Graveside services and burial followed in the Bethel Cemetery in Canton, N.C.

Nellene Canter Grogan

Mrs. Nellene Canter Grogan, 75, of U.S. Highway 321 North, Sugar Grove, died Sunday evening, June 12, 2005, at the Watauga Medical Center.

She was born April 1, 1930 in the Todd community of Ashe County, a daughter of Orville and Lillie Hodgson Canter.

Mrs. Grogan was a homemaker. She was of the Baptist faith and attended Doe Ridge Baptist Church and Valley Home Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Judy Greer and husband, Gary, of Fleetwood and Brenda Combs and husband, Cecil, of Zionville; three sons, Gary Wayne Grogan and wife, Mary, of Boone, Roy Grogan and wife, Reba, of Meat Camp and Roger Grogan of Sugar Grove; five grandchildren, Kris Greer and wife, Kristy, of Fleetwood, Tony Grogan of Lenoir, Dena Grogan of Meat Camp, Brandy Cornett of Trade, Tenn. and James Combs of Zionville; ten great-grandchildren; two sisters, Veralee Calhoun and husband, G.C., of Trinity and Reba Stanley and husband, Stan, of Elkton, Md.; and two brothers, Fred Canter and James Canter and wife, Lisa, all of Wilkesboro. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer P. Grogan; a granddaughter, Misty Dawn Grogan; her granddaughters’ husband, Jason Cornett; three sisters, Pauline Eller, Emma Rash and Nancy Trivette; and one brother, Joe Canter.

Services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Robert Wiles and the Rev. Bruce Miller. The family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon from 12:30 until 2 p.m., prior to services, at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Beaver Creek Christian Church Cemetery.

Robert B. Lincks

Mr. Robert B. Lincks, 76, of Grandmother Mountain Road, Linville, died Monday afternoon, June 13, 2005, at home.

He was born March 22, 1929, in Indianapolis, Ind., to the late James and Clara Belle Burnett Lincks.

Mr. Lincks was a graduate of Shortridge High School and Butler University in Indianapolis where he was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity. He retired from Burlington Industries after 32 years of service as director of Human Resources and Development. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and a member of Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Valle Crucis.

He served on the Board of Directors of Avery County Hospice, Cannon Memorial Hospital, Crossnore School, Inc., Southern Appalachian Highland Conservancy, Mayland Community College, the Southern College Placement Association and was a founding member of Greensboro Day School.

Survivors include his wife, Judy Lincks; three sons, Robert B. “Robin” Lincks and wife, Susan, of Oak Ridge; Randy Lincks and wife, Joanne, of Pemberton, British Columbia and Steve Lincks of Vail, Colo.; one grandson, Robert B. Lincks, III, of Oak Ridge; and one granddaughter, Savannah Jean McKinney Lincks, of Pemberton.

A memorial service will be conducted Friday morning at 11:30 a.m. at Holy Cross Episcopal Church, with Dr. John Zellner officiating.

The family will receive friends, at the church, following the service.

Burial will be private at Tanglewood Cemetery in Linville.

Mattie Carol Swift

Ms. Mattie Carol Swift, 64, of Canton, N.C., and formerly of Zionville, died June 10, 2005, at Silver Bluff Rest Home.

Survivors include three sons, Jerry Hicks and wife, Margo, of Sugar Grove, N.C.; Nelson Hicks and wife, Mercedes, of Kansas City, Missouri, and Jonathon Hicks of Clyde, N.C.; and two grandchildren, Sarah Hicks and Elias Hicks, both of Clyde, N.C.

Memorial services will be held Thursday evening, June 16, at 7 p.m. in the Meadowview Room at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church.

James Grady Wilson, Jr.

Mr. James Grady Wilson, Jr., 76, of 311 Staples Drive, Rolesville, N.C., died Sunday, June 12, 2005, at Wake Medical Center.

He was born Oct. 8, 1928 in Watauga County, to the late James Grady Wilson, Sr. and Allie Dale Wilson Wilson.

Mr. Wilson graduated from Appalachian High School and began his law enforcement career in 1951 with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. In 1954, he transferred to the License and Theft Division of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. In 1954, he transferred to the License and Theft Division of the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles where he served the people of the state for 32 years. Mr. Wilson retired in 1985 as Director of the License and Theft Division. He enjoyed a second career with Clancy & Theys Construction Company where he served as fleet manager. Mr. Wilson was still employed part-time with Clancy & Theys at the time of his death. His life was centered on his family and New Hope Baptist Church where he was an active member and church leader. He served as a deacon and held numerous committee and leadership positions that helped shape the direction of New Hope Baptist Church. A committed father and husband, he guided his family with principle and gentleness. He lived his life exemplifying the words of the Prophet Micah by doing justice, loving mercy and walking humbly with his God.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Irene Weaver Wilson; a son, Brad Wilson and wife, Carole P. Wilson, of Cary, N.C.; a daughter, Jeannine W. Efting and husband, Alan Efting, of Wilmington, N.C.; and grandchildren, Anne Wilson, Alex Wilson, Allie Efting, Amie Efting and Abigail Efting.

Services will be conducted Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. at New Hope Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Raleigh Memorial Park.

Gladys Lee Brown Cheek

Mrs. Gladys Lee Brown Cheek, 85, of 118 Rainbow Trail, Boone, died Friday morning, June 10, 2005, at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory.

She was born Jan. 9, 1920, in Silverstone, Watauga County, to the late General Lee and Bessie Pearl Lawrence Richards.

Mrs. Cheek was a homemaker and well known quilt maker. In 1985, a commemorative quilt was pieced together with handmade squares in celebration of the 50th anniversary of electricity in rural areas by the North Carolina Electrical Co-ops. Gladys was asked to complete it and she hand-stitched the entire quilt. The quilt hangs in the state office in Raleigh. She was a member of Perkinsville Baptist Church for the past 55 years.

Survivors include her husband, Brady Cheek; one daughter, Dorothy Brown Horvath and husband, Mike, of Wilkesboro; three sons, Carlton Brown and J.B. Brown and wife, Joann, all of Hudson, and Eddie Brown and wife, Dianne, of Boone; one stepdaughter, Betty Causey and husband, Larry, of Stokesdale; and one stepson, Ricky Cheek of Lexington; three sisters, Ruby Jones and husband, Chester, and Suma Jones, all of Boone, and Bernice Grice and husband, James, of Concord; four brothers, Russell Richards and wife, Bunnie, Kenneth Richards and Johnny Richards and wife, Smitty, all of Boone, and Sanford Richards of Lynchburg, Va. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, John Smith Brown; three brothers, R.L. Richards, Bobby Lynn Richards and Odell Richards; and a step-son, Tommy Cheek.

Services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Perkinsville Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Harold Bennett, the Rev. Ernest Haddad and the Rev. Mark Chaney. Burial followed in Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens.

Daisy Brown Greene

Mrs. Daisy Brown Greene, 78, of Edmisten Road, Blowing Rock, died Saturday morning, June 11, 2005, at Blowing Rock Hospital.

She was born in Caldwell County, April 16, 1927, a daughter of the late William Richard and Nellie Kate Reid Brown.

Mrs. Greene was a member of Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church and was a homemaker.

Survivors include one daughter, Ella Fawley; one granddaughter, Laura Fawley; one grandson, Daniel Fawley; two sisters, Elsie Bodford and Maude White, both of Winston-Salem; and one brother, William “Bill” Oscar Brown of Lenoir.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rudolph C. Greene; one sister, Faye Mitchell; and two brothers, Rathna and Atwell Brown.

Services will be conducted Monday morning at 10 o’clock at Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Larry Lyon. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery.

Rev. James L. Isbell Jr.

Rev. James L. Isbell, Jr., 70, of Laura Lane, Lenoir, died Friday, June 10, 2005, at Caldwell Memorial Hospital.

He was born Nov. 26, 1934 in Watauga County, to the late James Lillard Isbell Sr. and Ada Horton Isbell.

Rev. Isbell was the pastor for Boone Mennonite Brethren Church for 20 years and served in the ministry for over 30 years. He worked as a supervisor for Singer Furniture  Angfor over 20 years.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille Isbell ; a son, Marshall James Isbell of Sacramento, Calif.; a daughter, Chant’e Isbell Stucky and fiance, Raymond McDowell of Lenoir; a daughter-in-law, Tammy Isbell of Lenoir; two brothers, Harold Isbell and wife, Linda, of Asheboro, George Isbell and wife, Carolyn, of Lenoir; one step-brother, Melvin Parker of Las Vegas, Nev.; four sisters, Betty Davis of Hampton, Va., Norma Harris and husband, Dean, of Lenoir, Jessie Pope and husband, Willie E. Pope, of Hampton, Va., Azalea Berry of Hampton, Va.; four grandchildren, Autumn, Derrick, Amara, Rae’anna; six great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Theodore and Phillip Isbell.

Services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Bushtown Mennonite Brethren Church with the Rev. Terry Hunt, the Rev. James Wilfong, the Rev. Eric Lipford and the Rev. Fred Howell officiating. The church will be open for the body to lie in state from 12:00 to 2 p.m.

Agnes Morgan Jeter

Miss Agnes Morgan Jeter, 97, of East Main Street, Union, S.C., died June 1, 2005 at her home.

She was born at the old Rice-Coleman-Jeter home in Union County on Feb. 22, 1908. She was the last remaining sibling of the late Dr. Robert Russell and Agnes Coleman Jeter.

Miss Jeter was a graduate of Union High School where she was inducted into the Union High School Athletic Hall of Fame. Upon graduation from High School she told her mother that she always knew what she would do in life. Commonly referred to as “Jete” since her high school days, Miss Jeter entered Winthrop College, Rock Hill, S.C., where she was presented The Distinguished Alumni Award. She also received her master’s degree from Peabody College, Nashville, Tenn.

In addition to public school teaching in North Carolina, she taught at Greensboro College and at the Out-of-Door School in Sarasota, Fla. She began her career at Camp Yonahlossee in 1927 as a college student counselor and never missed a summer until her retirement in 1982. During her career, after her start as a counselor, she became a full time director and eventually owner of one of the finest camps for girls in the nation. Upon her retirement, she returned to Union in 1982. She was a member of Grace Methodist Church and volunteer with Meals on Wheels.

Survivors include numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held  at 11 a.m., June 16, at Grace United Methodist Church. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Gary Byrd.

Coy Stines

Mr. Coy Stines, 81, of 1291 Joe Parlier Road, Elk Park, died Saturday, June 11, 2005, at home.

She was born Oct. 21, 1923, in Watauga County, a son of the late Rev. Charlie and Ida Brown Stines.

Mr. Stines was a member of Beech Creek Regular Baptist Church, a deacon and church clerk for 46 years. He was a retired carpenter.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 62 years, Faye Stines; three daughters, Gladys Guy and husband, Glenn, of Sugar Grove, Wanda Potter and husband, Dennis, and Glenda Roark and husband, Norman, all of Elk Park; five sons, Kelba Stines and wife, Betty, of Newland, Bill Stines and wife, Kathy, of Fleetwood, Carl Stines and wife, Tammie, of Butler, Tenn., Danny Stines and wife, Debbie, and Ronnie Stines, all of Elk Park; two sisters, Mrs. Viola Phillips of Vilas and Mrs. Ruth Estep, both of Elk Park. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Paul Stines, Floyd Stines and Clyde Stines; three sisters, Mrs. Eula Ward, Mrs. Vertie Whaley and Mrs. Addie Estep; and one great-grandchild, Trenton Cody Stines.

Services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Beech Creek Regular Baptist CHurch. The body will lie in state at the church from 1-2 p.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Dean Shephard. Burial will follow in the Stines Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Hampton Funeral Service.

Billie Sue Medley Ward

Mrs. Billie Sue Medley Ward, 71, of Gentry Street, North Wilkesboro, died Friday, June 10, 2005, at Villages of Wilkes.

She was born May 28, 1934, in White Top, Va., to the late Joseph and Virgie Weaver Medley.

Survivors include her husband, Chalmer Ward; two sons, Eddie Ward of North Wilkesboro and Richard Ward of Warrensville; and two daughters, Katie Frazier and Judy Reedy, both of North Wilkesboro; one brother, Donnie Medley of Wilkesboro; and two sisters, Lucille Dillard of North Wilkesboro and Joann Wood of Greensboro. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Deanna Anders; one brother, Rufus Weaver; and two sisters, Dorothy Brown and Mary Belle Curry.

Services were conducted this morning (Monday) at 11 a.m. at Miller Funeral Home Chapel in North Wilkesboro, officiated by the Rev. Jimmy Dean Dillard and the Rev. Jerry Adams. Burial followed in the North Wilkesboro City Cemetery.

Miller Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.
