Gladys Campbell Adams

Ms. Gladys Campbell Adams, 67, of 7073 Highway 421 North, Vilas, died Wednesday night, May 11, 2005, at Watauga Medical Center.

She was born March 6, 1938, in Vilas, Watauga County, to the late Raymond and Addie Muriel Horton Campbell.

Ms. Adams was a homemaker and a member of Vanderpool Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Teresa "Toot" Dandy of Boone and Ellen Dotson and husband, Keith, of Vilas; two sons, Willie Dandy and wife, Diane, of Zionville and Allen Adams and wife, Cathy, of Mountain City, Tenn.; three granddaughters, Kortni Hollars and husband, Johnny, and Lea Dotson, all of Vilas, and Brandy Dotson, of Mountain City, Tenn.; three grandsons, Joel Keith Cook and Andrew Adams and wife,  Marlana, all of Mountain City, Tenn., and Tyler Dandy of Zionville; four sisters, Mary Bell Lawrence and husband, Clayton, of Zionville, Dorothy Yates and husband, Henry, of Matney, Nellie Mitchell and husband, Buddy, and Frankie Potter and special friend, Jim Miller, all of Zionville; and Dorothy Yates and husband, Henry, of Matney (Banner Elk); three brothers, David "Red" Campbell and wife, Jean,  and Willard Campbell and wife, Peggy, all of Zionville, and Blaine Campbell and wife, Jean, of Sugar Grove. She is also survived by three great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Katherine Campbell; and a brother, Tommy Campbell.

Services will be conducted Saturday morning at 11:00 o'clock at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state from 10-11 a.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Derick Wilson and the Rev. Lynn Shook. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Silverstone.

The family will receive friends this evening (Friday) from 6-8 p.m. at Hampton Funeral Service. At other times, friends may call at the home of Frankie Potter, 138 Blueberry Hill in Zionville.

Owen Harvey “Sonny” Greer, Jr.

Mr. Owen Harvey “Sonny” Greer, Jr., 47, of Elgin, S.C., died Monday, May 9, 2005.

He was born in Boone, N.C., the son of Owen Harvey Greer, Sr. and Ruby Hodges Hornsby.

Mr. Greer was the owner of Palmetto Paving & Grading and also the owner of Greer Motorsports. He was a member of St. Andrews Baptist Church, Columbia, S.C. and also a member of Palmetto Drag Racer Association and was named “Outstanding Young Man of America” in 1998.

Survivors include his wife, Rebecca Peek Greer and their daughter, Rebecca Greer; his parents, Ruby and Joe Hornsby of Camden, S.C.; his father, Owen Greer, Sr. of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; his sister, Ginger Moss and husband, Burley, of Charlotte, N.C.; two nephews, Dylan and Cole Moss; his maternal grandmother, Eulala Hodges of Vilas.

Services will be conducted Saturday morning at 11 o’clock at the First Baptist Church of Camden, officiated by the Rev. Fred Miller, Jr. and James Howard Hodges, Jr. Burial will follow in the Quaker Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7-8:30 at the Kornegay Funeral Home in Camden.

The family suggests memorials be made to Special Olympics or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Lena Grace Jones

Miss Lena Grace Jones, 80, of 418 Chestnut Grove Road, Boone, died Wednesday morning, May 11, 2005, at Blowing Rock Hospital Extended Care.

She was born March 10, 1925, in the Meat Camp community of Watauga County. Miss Jomes was a self-employed caregiver and sitter and a member of Meat Camp Baptist Church.

Survivors include one brother, Chester Jones and wife, Ruby, of Boone; one niece, Nell Fletcher and husband, Max, of Boone; and two nephews, Robert Jones and wife, Linda, of Fleetwood and Ned Jones and wife, Judy, of Boone; two great-nieces, Kristina Jones and husband, Scott, and Kim Jones, and two great-nephews, Tim Jones and wife, Natalie, and Mark Jones and wife, Angel. She is also survived by a number of special cousins, Margaret Miller, Ernest Miller and wife, Darline, Lloyd Miller and wife, Josephine, Luna Faye Auton and husband, Lewis, and Nellie Jean Beach and husband, Danny.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Sally Bertha Jones.

Services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock at Meat Camp Baptist Church. The body will lie in state at the church from 1-2 p.m. Officiating will be Rev. David Clippard. Burial will follow in in the Meat Camp Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon from 1-2 p.m. at the church, prior to the service. At other times, friends may call at the home of Chester and Ruby Jones, 388 Chestnut Grove Road, Boone.

Flowers are appreciated, or memorial contributions may be made to the Meat Camp Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, in care of Margaret H. Norris, 117 Panoramic Lane, Boone, N.C. 28607.

James Lozano

Mr. James Lozano, 78, of Aberdeen, N.C., died Wednesday, May 11, 2005, at the First Health Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

He was born April 9, 1927, in Layland, West Virginia.

Mr. Lozano retired from Great Lakes Steel Corporation in Ecorse, Mich. After retiring to North Carolina, he worked part-time at the Country Club of North Carolina as a security guard. A long-time member of Gethesemane Baptist Church in Michigan, he was proud to be a Shriner and a 32nd Degree Mason.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Mary Rosalie Tester Lozano; one daughter, Pamela McElreath and husband, Jimmy, of Southern Pines; two sons, Ray Charles Lozano and Kim Travis Lozano and his wife, Claudette, all of Grand Rapids, Mich.; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and three step-grandchildren; one sister, Adela Szakaly of Michigan; and his sister-in-law, Doris Tester of Aberdeen.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Nina Davis Garcia; and his grandparents, Lucy and Charley Davis.

Services will be conducted Monday morning at 11 o’clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state at the chapel from 10-11 a.m. Masonic graveside services and burial will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens.

All Masons are asked to meet Monday morning at 10 o’clock at Snow Lodge #363 in Boone.

The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Boles Funeral Home in Pinehurst.

Ruth Elizabeth “Pat”  Cook Blue 

Mrs. Ruth Elizabeth “Pat” Cook Blue, 89, Charlotte native and longtime resident of Boone, N.C., died May 7, 2005, at her residence in Charlotte. 

Mrs. Blue was a member and elder of First Presbyterian Church in Boone, N.C., and associated with Sugaw Creek Presbyterian Church in Charlotte.  She was a director of the Aberdeen & Rockfish Railroad, a member of the Lions Club in Foscoe, N.C., and a member at Hound Ears Club in Blowing Rock.  Prior to her retirement, she was an executive assistant for J. A. Jones Construction Company in Charlotte.

Mrs. Blue is survived by her brother, Wilbur F. Cook; a sister, Sarah C. Isaacs;  brother-in-law, John S. Isaacs; sister-in-law, Phyllis L. Cook; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her husband of 60 years, John Angier Blue; daughters Frances Catherine Blue Juett and Sarah Duke Blue; parents Chalmers Worth Cook and Mary Allison Cook; sisters Eloise Cook Dale and Martha Ann Cook; and brother William Chalmers Cook. 

A graveside service was held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, May 10th at  Bethesda Cemetery in Aberdeen, N.C., with the Rev. Ron Bowie officiating.  A memorial service will also be held on Wednesday, May 11, ay 3 p.m. at Sugaw Creek Presbyterian Church in Charlotte with the Rev. Ron Bowie and the Rev. Keith Copeland officiating. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to her favorite charities, Holy Angels Nursery, Belmont, N.C.; Special Olympics; or Hospice at Charlotte.  The family wishes to express their gratitude to Donna Wilfong and the staff at The Cove at Wilora Lake Lodge for their excellent and loving care of Ruth.

Paul Leon Miller

Mr. Paul Leon Miller, 73, of Enid, Oklahoma, died Saturday, May 7, 2005, in Highland Park Manor.

He was born June 23, 1931 in Brownville, N.C. to Balma Reese and Hazel Crete Cooke Miller.

Mr. Miller was a graduate of Boone High School in Boone, N.C. He married Loretta Colleen Ryan on Sept. 25, 1954 at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1950. He served during the Korean War, retiring in 1970 as a Master Sergeant. He went to work for the U.S. Postal Department in 1971 and retired after 20 years service.

Mr. Miller was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. He enjoyed golfing, gardening, visiting with family and was an avid Oklahoma State University fan.

Survivors include his wife of over 50 years, Colleen Ryan Miller; one son, Randy Miller of Tampa, Fla.; a daughter, Pam Summers and husband, David, of Valdosta, Ga.; his mother, Hazel Miller of Todd, N.C.; one brother, Ronald Miller of Todd, N.C.; two sisters, Peggy Greer and Janelle Miller of Boone; and grandchildren, Brian, Katie, Adam and Stephanie Miller, and Sarah and Jared Summers.

He was preceded in death by his father; and one granddaughter, Stephanie Miller.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted Thursday at 12:00 noon, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with the Rev. Kevin Ratterman officiating. There will be a Recitation of the Rosary at 7 p.m. Wednesday, in the Ladusau-Evans Chapel with Deacon Tony Crispo officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Circle of Love or American Cancer Society with Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home, P.O. Box 3501 Enid, OK 73702, serving as custodians of the fund.

Theodore “Ted” Orville Peoples, Jr.

Mr. Theodore “Ted” Orville Peoples, Jr., 63, of Winston-Salem, died Monday, May 9, 2005, surrounded by family, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.

He was born May 28, 1941 in Forsyth County to Theodore Orville Peoples, Sr. and Grace Ball Peoples.

Mr. Peoples was a member of New Philadelphia Moravian Church, a 1960 graduate of Northwest High School and had retired after many years as a long haul truck driver.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda Williams Peoples; two sons, Theodore O. Peoples, III and wife, Laura, of Kernersville and Thad W. Peoples and wife, Brenda, of Clemmons; four daughters, Wenona Vistoso of Pasadena, Md., Denise Fulton and husband, George, of Lexington, Monique Peoples and husband, Eddie, of Conover and April Bostian and husband, Steve, of Boone; his mother, Grace Ball Peoples of Holden Beach; and 12 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Theodore Orville Peoples, Sr.

A memorial service will be conducted Thursday afternoon, May 12, at 2:30 p.m. at New Philadelphia Moravian Church, officiated by the Rev. Arkon Stewart. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the church parlor.

Mary Jane Quickenton

Mrs. Mary Jane Quickenton, 77, of 235 Meadow Hill Drive, Boone, wife of the late Arthur F. Quickenton, died Monday night, May 9, 2005, at Watauga Medical Center.

She was born March 23, 1928, in Albany, New York, to the late George and Margaret Kaiser Quackenbush.

Mrs. Quickenton was a retired claims adjuster from the Unemployment Insurance Division of the State of New York. She was of the Catholic faith.

Survivors include one son, Arthur J. Quickenton of Boone; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Anna Mae Beardsley, Dolly Gerhart and Sis Bernardi; and one brother, George Quackenbush.

A memorial service will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 12:15 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, with Father John Schneider officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Quickenton Scholarship Fund, Appalachian State University Foundation, Inc., Campus Box 32064, Boone, N.C. 28608.

Clarence Edward Dean Jr.

Mr. Clarence Edward Dean, Jr., 84, of Poplar Hill Drive, Boone, died Saturday afternoon, May 7, 2005, at home.

He was born April 12, 1921, in El Paso, Texas, the son of the late Clarence Edward and Chloe Bryan Dean, Sr.

Mr. Dean was a World War II veteran and served as a Captain in the infantry. He was a supervising engineer at White Sands Missile Range in White Sands, New Mexico. He was retired from El Paso Natural Gas Company, where he had worked for twenty-five years as a comptroller. He married Frances Kelley Jan. 7, 1966.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Kelley Dean; one daughter, Rebecca Augustine and husband, Michael, of Blowing Rock; and two granddaughters, Alyssa and Elaina Frieberg of Blowing Rock.

Services will be conducted Wednesday morning at the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel in Abilene, Texas. Burial will follow in the Elmwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Boone United Methodist Church, 471 New Market Boulevard, Boone, N.C. 28607 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Murriel Harmon Glenn

Mrs. Murriel Harmon Glenn, 92, died Sunday, May 8, 2005, at the Presbyterian Home in High Point.

A native of Watauga County, Mrs. Glenn was the wife of the late Curtis Nading Glenn, and the daughter of the late Dallas B. and Margaret Pauline Ingram Harmon.

After graduating from Cove Creek High School in Watauga County in 1932, Mrs. Glenn obtained her teaching degree from Appalachian State Teachers College in 1939. She was a beloved teacher at Cove Creek Elementary until her retirement in 1976.

As a charter member of the First Presbyterian Church of Boone, Mrs. Glenn sang in the choir and served as an elder and deacon and enjoyed the seniors “Friday Club”. She was recognized as an Honorary Life Member of the Womens’ Organization of the Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Glenn was a revered member of the Boone community where she took great joy in participating in many ways. She was a member of the N.C. Retired Teachers Association, Alpha Delta Kappa, the Business & Professional Womans’ Club, and the Garden Club. Consistent with her giving and caring nature, she was a regular volunteer at Watauga County Hospital until moving to the Presbyterian Home in High Point, N.C., where she was an active resident for over 10 years playing in the Home’s band and sharing her sharp wit and sense of humor. In High Point she joined the Presbyterian Church of that city.

Survivors include one daughter, Margaret C. Glenn of Winston-Salem; one granddaughter, Meribeth Manterfield VanDorp and husband, Craig, of San Jose, Calif.; one grandson, Michael Glenn Edwards of Winston-Salem and a number of nieces, nephews and special cousins.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Lena Jones, Tina Greer and Mary Odena Harmon; and two brothers, Ed and Vilas Harmon.

Services will be conducted Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Boone with Dr. Ron Bowie officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens, Wednesday morning at 10:15, prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church in Boone, 663 Howard St., Boone, N.C. 28607.

Florence Edna Harmon

Miss Florence Edna Harmon, 80, of Mountain Care Facilities, Boone, N.C., died Friday morning, May 6, 2005 at Cannon Memorial Hospital in Linville.

She was born Oct. 1, 1924 in Watauga County, a daughter of Henry and Martha Ward Harmon.

Survivors include a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Lula Ward and Ruby Presnell; and three brothers, Riley, Elbert and Grady Harmon.

Graveside services will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Ward-Glenn Cemetery, officiated by the Rev. James D. Hagaman.

John Henry “Pedro” Hodges

Mr. John Henry “Pedro” Hodges, 78, of Little Laurel Road, Boone, died Saturday afternoon, May 7, 2005, at the Davant Rehab and Extended Care Facility in Blowing Rock.

He was born in Watauga County, April 10, 1927, a son of the late Charles Newland and Mary Anna Roark Hodges.

Mr. Hodges was retired, and had previously worked at Appalachian State University and English Gardens.

Survivors include five nieces, Wanda Yount of Granite Falls, Mary Ann Perry of Silverstone, Tammy Bentley, Linda Debbs and Jerrie Dampman, all of Boone; one nephew, Clyde Burleson of Boone; and a number of great-nieces and nephews.

Services will be conducted Monday morning at 11 o’clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiating will be the Rev. James D. Hagaman. The family will receive friends Monday morning from 10-11 a.m., one hour prior to the services, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice of Watauga County, 136 Furman Road, Boone, N.C. 28607.

Donley Ray (Don) Isaacs

Donley Ray (Don) Isaacs, 79, of Youngtown, Arizona, passed away on Wednesday, May 4, 2005. 

He was born in Vilas, N.C. on October 13, 1925 and was the son of the late Noah Alvin and Callie Stout Isaacs. 

He was a long-time member of West Valley Family Church in Glendale, Arizona, where, among all his friends, Pastor Mike and Kristen Foley were two of his dearest friends. 

Surviving are his wife of 36 years, Mabel Isaacs; one daughter, Diane Pendergrass and husband, Doug, of Abingdon, Va.; one step-daughter, Karen Bell of Pisgah Forest, N.C.; grandchildren, David Pendergrass of Abingdon, Va., Tommy Pendergrass and wife, Deborah, and great-granddaughters Keesha and Paige Pendergrass of Dobson, N.C., and granddaughter, Mary Michelle McQuaid and husband, Howard James, of Washington; and four sisters, Edith Arnold of Mountain City, Tenn., Blanche Rominger of Vilas, N.C., Dell McGuire and husband, France, of Vilas, N.C. and Ruth Parks of Roanoke, Va.  He had fifteen siblings, therefore, he had a lot of nieces and nephews, too numerous to mention.  

He was preceded in death by five brothers, Clay Isaacs (which was his twin brother), Ed Isaacs, Boone Isaacs, Lawson Isaacs, and Robert Isaacs, six sisters, Jane Isaacs Norris, Mary Isaacs Greene, Sally Isaacs Holliman, Grace Isaacs Reed, Bessie Isaacs Anderson, and Earl Isaacs Adkins and step-son, Jack Fisher.

Everyone who knew Ray (Don) loved him and when he found out he had cancer he  called one of his nieces and said "Don’t shed any tears, tears won’t help, but prayers will".  With this in mind, please pray for all his friends, family and loved ones.  We all need prayers – all of the time.

Funeral services are being handled by Schaeffers Funeral Home in Petersburg, West Virginia.

 

Maggie Shelton Miller

Mrs. Maggie Shelton Miller, 96, of 4428 Meat Camp Road, Todd, died Saturday morning, May 7, 2005, at her home.

She was born July 29, 1908, in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Benjamin Harrison and Mary Ellen Trivette Shelton.

Mrs. Miller was a homemaker and a member of Proffitt’s Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Grace Proffitt, Mrs. Evaglee Winebarger and husband, Worth, Miss Lola Miller, all of Todd; Mrs. Lucy Eggers and husband, Curtis, of Boone; a son, Charles Miller of Boone; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Diane Miller of Todd; a former daughter-in-law, Verlee Miller of Boone; one sister, Mrs. Gladys Roark of Hudson; and a brother, Vernon Shelton and wife, Geneva, of Vilas; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Osie Miller of Mountain City, Tenn. and Mrs. Ann Miller of Todd. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Donley Miller; two sons, Jeff Miller and L.H. Miller; and a son-in-law, Odell Proffitt; and two sisters and one brother.

Services were conducted Monday morning at 11 a.m. at Proffitt’s Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Delmar James officiating. Burial followed in Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Todd.

Hampton Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.

 

Ruth Beeson Pugh

Mrs. Ruth Beeson Pugh, 74, of 1639 Orchard Lane, Boone, and Murrells Inlet, S.C., died Thursday, May 5, 2005, at her home in Boone.

She was born Dec. 9, 1930, in Randolph County, to the late Garland Blair and Lela Kemp Beeson.

Mrs. Pugh was a graduate of Asheboro High School and Guilford College. She worked in library research at Purdue University and N.C. State University. Prior to retirement, she served as a secretary in the North Carolina Legislature. She was a member of Bethel Friends Meeting in Asheboro.

Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Charles Pugh of Boone and Murrells Inlet; three daughters, Barbara Marsh of Port Royal, S.C., Joyce Morgan of Harrisburg and Susan Hash of Winston-Salem; one son, David Charles Pugh of Raleigh; and one sister, Mary Ella Beeson Pugh of Asheboro. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Services were conducted this afternoon (Monday) at 2 p.m. at Bethel Friends Meeting, officiated by the Rev. Terry Kersey and the Rev. Darrin Allen. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bethel Friends Meeting Cemetery Fund, 2519 Bethel Friends Road, Asheboro, N.C. 27205 or Hospice of Watauga County, 136 Furman Road, Boone, N.C. 28607.

Lennie Earl Trivette

Mr. Lennie Earl Trivette, 79, of Rominger Road, Banner Elk, died Sunday morning, May 8, 2005, at his home.

He was born Sept. 24, 1925 in Watauga County, a son of Maston and Nettie Mast Trivette.

Mr. Trivette was a member of Antioch Baptist Church. He retired from food services at ASU and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Glenn Trivette; three daughters, Faye Watson and husband, Roy, of Fleetwood, Mary Stines and husband, Johnny, of Banner Elk and Della Trivette of Roan Mountain, Tenn.; three sons, Bennie Trivette and wife, Connie, Wayne Trivette and Paul Trivette and wife, Ruth, all of Banner Elk; one sister, Ruby Trivette of Wilkesboro; and twelve grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren and three step great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Floy Warren; and five brothers, Victor, Raymond, George, Conley and Don Trivette.

Services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Antioch Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Carl Wilson and the Rev. David Testerman. The body will lie in state at the church from 1-2 p.m. Military graveside rites and burial will follow at the Ward-Glenn Cemetery.

Flowers are appreciated or the family suggests memorials to Hospice of Avery County, P.O. Box 1357, Newland, N.C. 28657 or to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 1903, Boone, N.C. 28607.

The family will receive friends Monday evening from 7-8:30 at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.
