He taught world history and physical education at Beaver Creek High School in West Jefferson, N.C., for nine years. He was named Ashe County’s Outstanding Young Educator in 1967. While he was a dedicated and demanding teacher and women’s basketball coach, his greatest interest and love was coaching football. His teams enjoyed 3 undefeated seasons, culminating with a NCHSAA, Class AA Western Division Runner-up Trophy in 1968. The young men on those teams were like sons to him before and after his own sons were born.

After leaving teaching and coaching in 1970, Edwin went into business with his father and brother, Charles, and, later, he became sole owner of Boone Auto Exchange. For over 34 years, he prided himself upon dealing with people fairly and honestly.

Second only to his family was Edwin’s love of golf. He was an avid golfer, and among his closest friends were the men with whom he played at Boone Golf Club in the summer and wherever they could find a warm day in winter. He also  participated in many club and charity tournaments.

Edwin was a member of Grace Lutheran Church of Boone, having served on the Church Council when plans were made for the new sanctuary. The Church’s rose window was a source of great joy and comfort to him.

He was a strong supporter of ASU basketball and football and the Yosef Club.

Edwin was a loving husband, father, brother, and uncle and proud Pop to his grandchildren. He was a loyal and generous friend, and he had great appreciation of nature, particularly rainbows, spring, and the sunsets of the North Carolina mountains.

A number of nieces, nephews, and cousins, including Katherine Taylor of Valle Crucis, N.C., also survive.

Pastor Tim Smith officiated at private graveside services at the Taylor-Mast Cemetery in Valle Crucis on Monday, March 21, 2005. The service concluded with the exalting sounds of a Scottish bagpiper playing Edwin’s favorite hymn “Amazing Grace.”

Memorial contributions may be made to the Troutman Foundation, Grace Lutheran Church, 115 East King Street, Boone, N.C. 28607, or a charity of one’s choice.

Edwin’s family wishes to acknowledge each act of kindness shown to him and to them during his long illness and following his death. They are particularly grateful to T. Flynt Gray, III, who was Edwin’s doctor and friend, and the nurses and doctors of Watauga Medical Center who cared for him in a most professional manner, yet with such kindness and gentleness. The family is so very appreciative to Mr. Barney Hampton for his guidance and concern. They also wish to thank Pastor Tim Smith for his compassionate vigil with Edwin in his final illness and his comforting words to Edwin’s family before and after his death. The numerous phone calls, prayers, and beautiful cards have been such a welcome source of solace to his family.

Cancer Is Limited

It cannot cripple love.

It cannot shatter hope.

It cannot corrode faith.

It cannot eat away at peace.

It cannot destroy confidence.

It cannot kill friendship.

It cannot shut out memories.

It cannot invade the soul.

It cannot reduce eternal life.

It cannot quench the spirit.

It cannot lessen the power of the Resurrection.
