Bob Cole given top state award

A Todd man has won one of the state’s highest awards for public service.

Bob Cole was given the “Order of the Long Leaf Pine” award for his work in promoting the importance of bees to the world’s food supply. Cole has been raising bees since the age of three, and both his grandparents were beekeepers. He was born in the Rockingham area but moved to the mountains in 1967.

The Boone Area Planning Commission denied recommendation of a town of Boone initiated amendment to the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) that would affect storm water retention.

Storm water makes a splash with town council

Though the town of Boone is carefully monitoring its water usage, the Boone Town Council is now turning its eyes to a different, though equally wet, subject — storm water. Storm water was the topic of a March public hearing, with the town initiating a zoning amendment to Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) section 316, regarding off-line storm water retention requirements.

Boone Police Reports

March 17:  The Winn Dixie on N.C. 105 complained of receiving a worthless check.

Lowe’s Hardware on Blowing Rock Road was the location of a theft involving a small, brown leather purse containing a credit card, an unspecified number of $20 bills, and a state employee’s check book.

Troops returning home

The eagle has landed.

On Monday at 3:30 a.m., members of the  National Guard 1451st Transportation Company based in Boone have returned from their tour of duty in Iraq, landing at Pope Air Force Base at Ft. Bragg in Fayetteville. Members of the 1451st were attached to the 1450th based in West Jefferson. The were activated in the fall of 2003, underwent training at Ft. Stewart in Georgia, and were deployed overseas in March of last year.
