George M. Davies
Mr. George M. Davies of Rock Island, Tenn., the Midway community, died Tuesday, March 15, 2005, at Saint Thomas Hospital, in Nashville, Tenn.
He was a native of Bowling Green, Fla., and was a retired electrical engineer supervisor. Mr. Davies was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, and served his country with the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict.
Survivors include his wife, Carol Davies, RN; a brother, Fred I. Davies, Jr. of Rock Island, Tenn.; a sister-in-law and husband, Nancy and Hank Beuttel of Boone, N.C.; a nephew, John Beuttel of Boone; and a great-niece, Lauren Beuttel of Gastonia, N.C. Several cousins also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Edith Zimmerman Davies.
Private memorial services were held.

Hazel Elizabeth Eller Hartley
Mrs. Hazel Elizabeth Eller Hartley, 92, of Farthing Street, Boone, died Wednesday afternoon, March 16, 2005, at the Watauga Medical Center.
She was born in Watauga County, March 17, 1912, a daughter of the late Joseph N. and Florence Fletcher Eller.
Known affectionately as “Mama Hazel”, she was a homemaker and a member of Perkinsville Baptist Church.
Survivors include one son, Bill Edward Hartley, Sr. and his wife, Debbie, of Vilas; and three daughters, Joann Hartley and Ruby Lee West and her husband, Jim, both of Boone, and Barbara Sue Waldrep and her husband, Steve, of Marietta, Ga. Sixteen grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren also survive.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gray Edward Hartley; one son, Bobby Hartley; one grandson, Kelly Grey West; and eleven brothers and sisters, Spencer and William Eller, Ollie Blackburn, Oscar, Bill, Donald, Neut and Grady Eller, Carrie Hartley, Irene Winebarger and Arnie Mae Proffitt.
Services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 3 at the Perkinsville Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. D. Harold Bennett and the Rev. Bill E. Hartley, Jr. The body will lie in state at the church from 1-3 p.m. The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon from 1-3 p.m., two hours prior to services, at the Perkinsville Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. Burial will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens.

Robert Wilson “Bobby” Stokes III
Mr. Robert Wilson “Bobby” Stokes III, 66, died Wednesday evening, March 16, 2005, at his home in Blowing Rock, surrounded by family.
He was born Nov. 9, 1938 in Charlotte, to Robert Wilson Stokes, Jr. and Julia Jackson Stinson Stokes. After retiring from Johnson Mills Company, he spent a number of seasons in Myrtle Beach where he enjoyed playing golf with friends at Wachesaw Plantation. In 1999 he and his wife, Joy, moved to Blowing Rock where they became permanent residents. Bobby’s love for the game of golf afforded him many friends wherever he went. He was always “up” for another round.
Survivors include his loving wife of 43 years, Joyce Williams Stokes; a daughter, Gay Stieber and husband, Jeff; and a son, Robert Wilson “Bobby” Stokes IV and his wife, Nikki, all of Charlotte. He was very proud of his three grandsons, Tyler, Christopher and Turner Stieber, who fondly called him “Pappy.” Also surviving is a sister, Nona Stokes of Columbia, S.C.; and two brothers-in-law, R. Gaylord Williams, Jr. of New Smyrna Beach, Fla. and Reed Williams II of Richmond, Va.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Everet Williams.
Memorial services will be conducted Saturday afternoon, March 18, at 1 o’clock at St. Mary of the Hills Episcopal Church in Blowing Rock, officiated by Father Rick Lawler. Friends are invited to the home, 346 Mistletoe Lane, Misty Mountain on Friday, March 18, after 6 p.m.

Edgar Augusta Thomas Sr.
Mr. Edgar Augusta Thomas Sr., 87, of Lexington, died Thursday, March 10, 2005, at Wake Forest University Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
He was born Dec. 8, 1917, in Jackson Springs to William Donaldson Thomas and Dovie Ann Luck Thomas.
Mr. Thomas retired as executive vice president of manufacturing for Frank Ix and Sons. He served in the U.S. Air Corps, was a lifetime member of the International Management Council, served as trustee and was on the board of directors of Lexington Memorial Hospital, was a former Rotarian, and served as a director of the Lexington United Way and J. Smith Young YMCA. He was a Scoutmaster and also served on the executive council of the state 4-H. Mr. Thomas was deacon and a Sunday school teacher at his church.
He was a member of the Campbell University Board of Trustees since 1969, having served twice as chairman. He was the recipient of the Campbell University Presidential Medallion Award and the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award. He was presented the honorary doctorate of laws by the university in 2002. Mr. Thomas also served on the Davidson County Community College Foundation.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Davis Thomas; three children, Ann T. Cole and her husband, Robert, of Welcome, Martha T. Wetmore and her husband, Warren, of Boone and Edgar A. Thomas Jr. and his wife, Belinda, of Lexington; five grandchildren, Chalk P. Wetmore, Cammey E. Cole, Zarah C. Wetmore, Katrina C. Romblad and Edgar A. Thomas III; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, James Gurney Thomas and his wife, Edna, of Lowell.
A memorial service will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon at First Baptist Church on West Third Avenue, where he was an active member. The family will receive friends at the church immediately following the service.

Ronnie Dean Brown
Mr. Ronnie Dean Brown, 36, of 9694 Highway 421 North, Zionville, died Thursday, March 10, 2005, in Laurel Bloomery, Tenn.
He was born July 19, 1968, in Boone, Watauga County, to Grady Dean and Susie Knight Brown.
Mr. Brown was a salesman for Dean’s Auto Sales in Vilas and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include two sons, Matt Brown and Corey Brown, both of Zionville; one daughter, Brooke Brown, of Laurel Bloomery; his father and mother, Dean and Susie Brown of Vilas; one sister, Donna Keller and husband, David, and two nieces, Britni Keller and Felicia Keller, all of Vilas; and his companion, Kristi Thompson of Laurel Bloomery.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Olan and Lillie Brown; and maternal grandparents, Willet and Vica Knight.
Services will be conducted Thursday morning at 11 o’clock at Vanderpool Baptist Church. The body will lie in state at the church from 10-11 a.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Zane Tester and Wayne Carpenter. Burial will follow in the Vanderpool Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends this evening (Wednesday) from 7-9 p.m. at Hampton Funeral Service. At other times, friends may call at the home of Dean and Susie Brown, 253 Will Perry Road, Vilas.

Hassell Hicks
Mr. Sylvester Hassell Hicks, 75, of Charlie Hicks Road, Banner Elk, died Sunday night, March 13, 2005, at Blowing Rock Hospital Extended Care.
He was born March 22, 1929, in Banner Elk, Watauga County, to the late Gold Gilbert and Sarah Ann Harmon Hicks.
Mr. Hicks was a retired farmer and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include four sons, Ronald Hicks and wife, Shirley, of Lenoir, Sylvester Hicks of Raleigh, Monte Hicks, Sr. and wife, Rosie, of Midway, Tenn. and Leslie Hicks and wife, Freda, of Boone; three sisters, Hattie Presnell and husband, Benny, of Banner Elk, Frances Presnell of Claremont and Nancy Austin and husband, Gary, of Hudson; four brothers, Charlie Hicks and wife, Alice, of Banner Elk, Willis Hicks of Taylorsville, Jerry Hicks and wife, Nancy, and Orville Hicks and wife, Sylvia, all of Boone. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Services were conducted this morning (Wednesday) at 11 a.m. at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Gilbert Ward. Burial followed in the Liberty-Matney Cemetery.

R.D. Hodges
Mr. R.D. Hodges, 83, of 310 Delmar Street, Boone, died Friday, March 11, 2005, at Leesburg Regional Medical Center in Leesburg, Fla.
He was born August 3, 1921, in Zionville, Watauga County, to the late Russell D. and Faye Greer Hodges.
Mr. Hodges graduated from Boone High School and attended Appalachian State Teachers College for one year and Roanoke (Va.) Business College for two years. He was a U.S. Air Corps veteran of World War II and retired owner and president of R.D. Hodges Oil Company. He was a member of the Boone Fire Department for 30 years and served as fire chief for 20 years. He was a member of Perkinsville Baptist Church, Snow Lodge No. 363, the American Legion and the Moose Lodge. He was a former member of the Boone Jaycees, a former Scout Master and served on the board of directors of Watauga County Hospital.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Winborne Hodges; one son, Jeff Hodges of Chicago, Ill.; one brother, Mark Hodges and wife, Dottie, of Boone and Sarasota, Fla.; one niece, Tina Cook and daughter, Linzy, of Boone; and two nephews, Carl Smith and wife, Julie, and sons, Aaron and Elijah; and Shawn Smith, all of Sarasota, Fla.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Greer Hodges.
Services were conducted this afternoon (Wednesday) at 3 p.m. at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Harold Bennett and Dr. Wayne Brown. Burial followed in Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens.

Elena Ana Pereux Klepak
Mrs. Elena Ana Pereux Klepak, 67, died Wednesday, March 9, 2005.
She lived in the area for the last 10 1/2 years. She was born Jan. 12, 1938 to Elena Blanco Uztariz and Luis Silva y Guerra in Havana, Cuba. She married Robert Pereux and had five natural children and also had the pleasure of helping to raise for several years three more wonderful daughters with the help of her sister Maruca and her grandmother Madrina. Prior to the Castro revolution in Cuba Mrs Klepak and her husband Mr. Pereux owned the beach resort in Pinar del Rio, Cuba named “Cabanas.”
Survivors include her brother Luis Silva; nephew, Alejandro; and niece, Alicia. Her children are as follow: daughter Elena Maria and husband, Don Shaffer, and their children: Caleb, Lisa, Dave and granddaughter Mya; daughter, Michelle and husband, Greg Johnson, and their sons: Robert, Gregory and Andrew; daughter, Brigitte (Bibi) Pereux; Robert Pereux, Jr. ; his son, Robert Pereux III; daughter, Edith (Edie) and husband, Jeff Chandler, and heir daughters: Rachel, Justine and Michelle and husband, Chris Filley; daughter, Rosa Gago, and her daughter, Tania, and son, Alex; daughter Lena and husband, Anthony Allongo, and their sons: Jose Antonio (Joey) and Andrew (Andy); daughter Joselyn and husband, Oresetes (Tico) Perez, and their children: Giovanni, Gian’Carlo, Gianni, Geneieve; very close cousins Lourdes Solis Jarval, Jose Antonio and wife, Lillian Solis, and their daughter Lily and husband, Javier Fiveroa. She is also survived by many more nieces, nephews and friends that loved her.
Memorial services will be held at Faith Fellowship and Harvest Ministries in W. Jeffereson on Wednesday March 16, 2005 at 6 p.m.

Betty Jo Culler Sheffield
Mrs. Betty Jo Culler Sheffield, 72, of Edgewood Drive, Granite Falls, wife of the late Roscoe Russell Sheffield, died Monday, March 14, 2005, at Caldwell County Hospice.
She was born Jan. 23, 1928, in Tennessee, to the late Everett and Effie Roten Culler.
Mrs. Sheffield attended Sunrise Baptist Church in Sawmills and was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Zionville.
Survivors include two daughters, Carol Pritchard and husband, Marvin, of Collettsville and Barbara Sue Clark and husband, Fred, of Connelly Springs; two sons, William Everett Sheffield of Rhodhiss and Ben Harold Sheffield of Sawmills; three sisters, Nancy Perry of Hudson, Ella Wood of Lenoir and Della Brown of Zionville. She is also survived by 12 grandchildren, Jimmy Jones, Sharon Beard, Mark Jones, Linda Campbell, Susan Truesdale, Crystal Wilson, Partica Hodge, Marion Bales, David Truesdale, Lisa Pritchard, Morgan Snyder and Brittany Sheffield; 13 great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Faye Brown of Boone, Dollie Byrd of Mountain City, Tenn. and Ruth Church Sheffield of Corpus Christi, Texas; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley Jean Jones; and a son, Russell Roscoe Sheffield.

She was born April 2, 1918, in Ashe County, to the late John Robert and Mary Alice Johnson Miller.
Survivors include one son, Bill Underwood of Ferguson; two daughters, Mary Jane Snyder Church of Roaring River and JoAnn Burke of Millers Creek; one stepson, Hobart Spicer of Wilkesboro; five stepdaughters, Eloise Miraglia of Baltimore, Md., Mildred Hodge, Peggy Miller and Frances Baugess, all of Millers Creek; and Lena Coldiron of North Wilkesboro; one sister, Belle Moretz of Boone. She is also survived by five grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Commodore Underwood; and her second husband, Ira Watkins.
Services were conducted this morning (Wednesday) at 11 a.m. at Miller Funeral Home Chapel in North Wilkesboro, officiated by the Rev. Farrell Shepherd and the Rev. John Burke. Burial followed in the Laurel Fork Baptist Church Cemetery in the Aho community of Watauga County.

Ford Odell Arnett, Sr.
Mr. Ford Odell Arnett, Sr., 71, of 100 Sugar Maintenance Lane, Banner Elk, died Friday morning, March 11, 2005, at Cannon Memorial Hospital in Linville.
He was born May 4, 1933, in Banner Elk, Avery County, to the late Wesley Benjamin and Ruth Coles Arnett.
Mr. Arnett was a retired mechanic from Doug Coffey Gas Station and a sawmiller. He was a member of Banner Elk Seventh Day Adventist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Norwood Arnett; two daughters, Bonnie Norwood and husband, Rick, and Elizabeth “Missy” Miller and husband, Wayne, of Banner Elk; one son, Ford “Junior” Arnett and wife, Cherri, of Banner Elk; two granddaughters, Heather Miller and Catie Arnett; and one grandson, Ryan Arnett, all of Banner Elk; three brothers, Buster Arnett and wife, Jane, and Eugene Arnett, all of Banner Elk, and Rhonda Arnett and wife, Ruth, of Sawmills; four sisters, Edna Townsend and husband, Paul, Floy Arnett and Mae Arnett, all of Banner Elk; and Evelyn Bailey and husband, Robert, of Crossnore. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Lizzie Tester, Annie Arnett and Lillian Arnett.
Services were conducted Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Banner Elk Seventh Day Adventist Church, officiated by Pastor Tony Cirigliano. Burial followed in the White Rock Baptist Church Cemetery.

Paul Allen Brooks
Mr. Paul Allen Brooks, 84, of 8979 Valley Boulevard, Fairway Villas, Blowing Rock, died Saturday night, March 12, 2005, at Blowing Rock Hospital.
He was born Dec. 2, 1920, in Albemarle, Stanly County, to the late Paul and Pansy Misenheimer Brooks.
Mr. Brooks graduated from North Carolina State University in 1941 with a degree in chemical engineering. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was sent to the European Theatre. There he fought in the “Battle of the Bulge” and became a prisoner of war. He was released at the end of World War II with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. In the late 1940’s, Mr. Brooks joined Celanese Corporation in Rock Hill, S.C. where he worked in diverse areas until the early 1960’s when he moved his family to Blowing Rock. He built the Cliff Dwellers Motel, the only four star motel in the area, which he operated until 1989. During this time, he rejoined Celanese Corporation for a period of time and was assigned to open and operate their chemical plant in Guadalajara, Mexico. He was a member of St. Mary Of The Hills Episcopal Church and the Blowing Rock Country Club, where he formerly served on the Board of Directors and as treasurer.
Survivors include his wife, Lena Robbins Brooks; one son, David Alan Brooks of Baton Rouge, La.; one daughter, Mary Anne Conn and husband, Gary, of Cleveland, Ohio; one granddaughter, Cynthia Wade of Greenville, S.C.; two brothers-in-law, Harry Robbins and wife, Barbara, of Seven Devils, and Spencer Robbins and wife, Grace, of Boone; two sisters-in-law, Ruth Robbins Botzis of Greenville, S.C. and Peggy Robbins Sellers of Blowing Rock. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Julian Throneburg.
A memorial service will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. at St. Mary Of The Hills Episcopal Church, with Father Rick Lawler officiating.
The family will receive friends Tuesday afternoon from 2:30-3 p.m., in the church fellowship hall, prior to the service.

Mr. Joel Lynn Hicks, 28, of 125 Wilson Hicks Road, Vilas, died Thursday evening, March 10, 2005, at Johnson City (Tenn.) Medical Center.
He was born Nov. 24, 1976, in Boone, Watauga County, to Johnny Delbert and Judy Wilson Hicks. Joel was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include his father and mother, Johnny and Judy Hicks; two brothers, Steve Hicks and wife, Selena, and Jimmy Hicks and wife, Janet, all of Vilas; three nieces, Sierra Hicks, Amanda Hicks and Brandy Hicks; and two nephews, Dustin Hicks and Tyler Hicks, all of Vilas. He is also survived by a number of aunts, uncles, cousins and special friends.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Woodrow and Carrie Lee Wilson; paternal grandparents, James and Rita Hicks; and two uncles, Jimmy Wilson and Bill Hicks.
Services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Quincy Norris, the Rev. Bill Warren and the Rev. James Hagaman. Burial followed in the Harmon Cemetery in Sugar Grove.

Virginia Ruth Miller
Mrs. Virginia Ruth Miller, 78, of Hilltop Street, Hudson, N.C., died March 10, 2005, at her residence.
She was born Feb. 23, 1927, in Trade, Tenn., to the late Abraham L. May and Nellie E. May.
Mrs. Miller was a member of First Christian Church of Lenoir, where she was a Sunday school teacher, secretary, Women’s Fellowship Group. She was retired from Caldwell County School System (Whitnel School).
Survivors include her husband, Jack D. Miller; two daughters, Brenda M. Deitz of Lenoir, N.C. and Beverly J. Henderson of Greensboro, N.C.; one brother, Landon May of Trade, Tenn.; two sisters, Janice Stanbury of Lenoir, N.C. and Jean May of Zionville, N.C.; two grandsons, Bradley Bodenhamer and Philip Deitz; and one great-grandson, Braiden Bodenhamer.

Charles Dwight Saine
Mr. Charles Dwight Saine, 70, of 211 Crestview Drive, Lincolnton, N.C., died Thursday, March 10, 2005.
He was born in Lincoln County and was the son of the late Hillard Guy and Virginia “Dare” Kale Saine.
Mr. Saine was a retired truck driver with Carolina Freight and a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Brown Saine; two sons, David Ray Saine of Vale, N.C. and Scott Neil Saine of Hickory; two daughters, Karen Denise Saine of Boone, and Debbie Roach of Lincolnton, N.C.; two sisters, Joyce Somerset of Albemarle and Jewell Dean Reinhardt of Lincolnton; four grandchildren, Josh Cornwell, Eric Cornwell, Jeana Roach and Jonathan Saine.
