Eldess Nash Crump

Mrs. Eldess Nash Crump, 79, formerly of Charlotte, N.C., died Thursday, March 10, 2005, at Watauga Medical Center in Boone, after a long illness.

She was born Dec. 18, 1925 in Union County to the late Raymond Lee Nash and Annie Brooks Nash.

Mrs. Crump was a member of Charlotte’s Briarcreek Road Baptist Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Miriam Crump-McGowen of Deep Gap; her son, Rick Crump of Monroe; a brother, Furman Nash; two sisters, Hallie Randall and Helen Parker; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 12, in the Hankins & Whittington Dilworth Chapel. Interment will follow in Sharon Memorial Park. Mrs. Crump’s family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:30-8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Beulah Stuard Mounday

Mrs. Beulah Stuard Mounday, 89, of the Davant Extended Care, and a former resident of the Foscoe community, died Wednesday morning, March 9, 2005, at Blowing Rock Hospital.

She was born in Kay County, Oklahoma, a daughter of the late Ed and Gertrude Kimes Stuard.

Mrs. Mounday was a homemaker and a resident of the Foscoe community for over 20 years.

Survivors include one daughter, Donnella Briggs and husband, Keith, of Boone; one son, Dennis Tyson of Albuquerque, New Mexico; two brothers, Orville Stuard of San Diego, Calif. and Johnny Stuard of Miami, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore R. Mounday; two sisters, Lola Walcher and Wanda Cassidy; and two brothers, Bud and Max Stuard.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Leonard James Blevins

Minister Leonard James Blevins, 70, of Crumpler, died Thursday evening, March 3, 2005, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

He was born in Ashe County, March 10, 1934, to the late James Edward Blevins and Stella Blackburn.

Minister Blevins worked as a truck driver for most of his life. He was also a Baptist minister. He was the pastor of several churches including Pleasant Home Baptist Church, Friendship Baptist Church of Hickory, Maryland and Trapp Missionary Baptist Church in Maryland. He married Merita Price on Mary 23, 1993. He and his wife sang in a lot of churches in the county.

Survivors include his wife, Merita Price Blevins; two sons, Larry Blevins of Wilkesboro and Leonard (Lenny) Blevins of Ferguson; a daughter, Linda Dishon of Winston-Salem, N.C.; a step-daughter, Della Carter of Crumpler; two brothers, Rev. Billy Joe Blevins of Lansing and Lida Blevins of Lansing; three sisters, Pauline Funk of Maryland, June Paisley of Grassy Creek and Kay Parsons of Millers Creek; four grandchildren, Kristi Griffin, Alisa Blevins, Kimberly Blevins, Ashley Carter; one great-grandson, Tyler Griffin; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John Lewis Blevins and Dewey Dwight Blevins; and a sister, Ruby Phipps.

Services were conducted Monday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Fred Jennings, the Rev. Wayne Jones, the Rev. Jerry Harris and the Rev. Lonnie Jones officiating. Burial followed in the Oak Hill Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.

Anita Byrum Eppley

Mrs. Anita Byrum Eppley, 72, of Boone, died unexpectedly Saturday, March 5, 2005, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

She was born Dec. 20, 1932, in High Point, to the late Frank and Mary Stanley Byrum.

After attending Allen Jay High School and graduating from High Point Central High School, she graduated from Brevard College and UNC-G with a major in music. During her high school years, she hosted the “Anita Byrum Sings” radio show on WHPE. She was active in many music positions with the Methodist Church. She and her husband were educational missionaries for five years in Bolivia, South America. After returning to the United States, they became residents of Boone and she began a 28-year teaching career with Watauga High School. During this time, she earned a Masters degree from Appalachian State University. Mrs. Eppley was proficient in Spanish and after retirement, assisted with language interpretation. She was a member of the North Carolina Association of Educators.

Her greatest love was family, friends, former classmates and the more than 4,000 students she taught during her musical and educational career. She loved meeting former students and their families and learning about their lives.

Mrs. Eppley was an active member of Boone United Methodist Church for the past 42 years. She loved her church and the many special friends who gathered to quilt and knit items for church activities and newborn babies at Watauga Medical Center. Recently, she was beginning to enjoy drawing and painting. As a member of the Red Hat Society, she enjoyed celebrating with the other ladies.

Survivors include her husband, Ernest D. Eppley; three sons, Luke Eppley and wife, Janet, of Lewisville, West Eppley and wife, Connie, of Boone, and Brad Eppley of Sarasota, Fla.; three granddaughters, Diane Eppley and Maralyn Eppley, both of Lewisville, and Kalie Eppley of Boone; three grandsons, Chris Eppley of Wake Forest, Chad Eppley and Dylan Eppley, both of Boone; one great-grandson, Luke Eppley of Lewisville; two brothers, Jerry Byrum and Lyndon Byrum, both of High Point; four nephews, Chuck Byrum and wife, Joann, of Concord, Michael Byrum of High Point, Scott Byrum and wife, Algene, of Reston, Va., and Grant Byrum of Atlanta, Ga.; two nieces, Laura Bame and husband, Chris, of Summerfield and Susan Byrum of Denver, Colo.; one great-nephew, Tyler Byrum of Reston; and one great-niece, Melinda Byrum of Lugoff, S.C.

A Celebration of Life service will be conducted Thursday morning at 11 o’clock at Boone United Methodist Church, with Dr. George Naff officiating. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park in High Point.

The family will receive friends this evening (Wednesday) from 7-8:30 p.m. at Hampton Funeral Service in Boone. At other times, friends may call at the   Eppley residence, 521 Dogwood Road in Boone.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Presbyterian-Methodist Children’s Choir, 663 Howard Street, Boone, N.C. 28607 or to the Cardiac Rehab Program, Watauga Medical Center Foundation, Inc., P.O. Box 2600, Boone, N.C. 28607.

We will miss her greatly, but she left us with many special moments of her life to treasure and celebrate for a lifetime. Our Lord blessed us and our communities by placing her among us so that we could journey with her for awhile. Let’s celebrate her HomeGoing!

Winifred Wood Hofland

Mrs. Winifred Wood Hofland, 88, of Linville, wife of the late Robert Hofland, died Saturday morning, March 5, 2005, at Glenbridge Health Care.

She was born Sept. 2, 1916, in Bronx, New York, to the late Clinton and Florence Kay Wood.

Mrs. Hofland was a graduate of Douglas College in New Brunswick, New Jersey, and a member of Trinity Methodist Church in Highland Park, New Jersey.

Survivors include two sons, John F. Hofland and wife, Deborah, of Linville and Robert Hofland of Palos Verdes Estates, California; one daughter, Kathleen Muller and husband, Albert, of New Brunswick, New Jersey. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Barbara Jean Wright McCaslin

Mrs. Barbara Jean Wright McCaslin, 49, of U.S. Hwy. 321 North, Sugar Grove, died Sunday afternoon, March 6, 2005, at Watauga Medical Center.

She was born in Cherokee, N.C., a daughter of Billie Jean Oxier and the late Harold George Wright.

Mrs. McCaslin was an administrative assistant.

Survivors include her husband, Mark McCaslin of Weeki Wachee, Fla.; three daughters, Lindsey Middleton of Statesville, Jody McCaslin of Sugar Grove, and Ginger McCaslin of Weeki Wachee, Fla.; one son, Brandon Parker of Florida; her mother, Billie Jean Oxier of Cherokee; two sisters, Kathy Arnold of Largo, Fla., and Joyce Brown of Spring Hill, Fla.; one brother, Eddie Wright of Newport, Tenn.; and one grandson.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Debi McDonald Singley

Mrs. Debi McDonald Singley, 51, of Woodring Circle, Boone, died Friday morning, March 4, 2005, at home.

She was born in Birmingham, Alabama, March 23, 1953, a daughter of the late Maurice and Betty Reddick McDonald.

Mrs. Singley was a homemaker, and a member of Bibleway Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Benjamin Singley; one son, Chris Adcox of Boone; one step-daughter, Wanda Fogleman of Pennsylvania; three sisters, Karen Thorpe of Georgia, Lori Rodgers and Diane McDonald, both of Florida; one brother, Morey McDonald of Nashville, Tenn.; and six grandchildren.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Irene Brown Sutherland

Mrs. Irene Brown Sutherland, 84, of Sutherland Road, Creston, died Sunday evening, March 6, 2005, at Life Care in Banner Elk.

She was born Sept. 26, 1920 in Watauga County, a daughter of William and Mary Grogan Brown.

Mrs. Sutherland was a member of Sutherland United Methodist Church. She retired with 25 years service from Sprague Electric in Lansing.

Survivors include two sons, Thomas Sutherland of Banner Elk and Michael Sutherland of Brenham, Texas; three granddaughters, Jenny Jordon of Greensboro, Samantha Sutherland of Brenham, Texas and Tracey Sutherland of Park City, Utah; and three grandsons, Tyler and Michael Sutherland, both of Brenham, Texas and Jesse Sutherland of Austin, Texas. Five great-grandchildren also survive.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Edward Sutherland; and her daughter, Norma Sutherland.

Services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Sutherland United Methodist Church, officiated by the Rev. Ricky Mitchell. Burial will follow in the Sutherland Family Cemetery.

Flowers are appreciated or the family suggests memorials to the Sutherland Family Cemetery Fund, in care of Faye Sutherland, 1454 Sutherland Road, Creston, N.C. 28615.

Charles Edward Quinn

Mr. Charles Edward Quinn, 68, of Boone, N.C., died Sunday, March 6, 2005, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C.

He was a son of the late Kirby Jernigan Quinn and Ethel Harris Quinn.

Mr. Quinn was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Boone, N.C. and formerly of Buncombe Street Methodist Church, Greenville, S.C. He was proprietor of Carolina Lamp Company in Boone, N.C. and formerly in sales at Kirby Quinn Interiors, in Greenville, S.C.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Padgett Quinn; three children, Tricia Cottingham of Kernersville, N.C., Charles Quinn Jr. and wife, Kim, of Boone, N.C., and Meg Quinn of Greenville, S.C.; six grandchildren, Catherine and Michael Cottingham, Ashley, Chaz, Casey and Allison Quinn; two brothers, Kirby Quinn, Jr. and Richard Quinn; and a sister, Linda Quinn Furman, all of Greenville, S.C.

Services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 663 Howard St., in Boone, N.C. and burial will be in Greenville, S.C. at Woodlawn Cemetery at 2 p.m. Thursday afternoon.

Monika Brandler Wilson

Ms. Monika Brandler Wilson, 65, of 899 Slabtown Road, Zionville, died Tuesday morning, March 8, 2005, at Watauga Medical Center.

She was born Dec. 31, 1939, in Furth, Germany, to Kunitundi Link Brandler and the late George Brandler.

Ms. Wilson was a retired seamstress from Shadowline, Inc. and was of the Lutheran faith.

Survivors include one daughter, Linda Wilson of Zionville; two sons, Ronald E. Wilson and wife, Heather, of Trinity, and William J. Wilson of Zionville; her mother, Mrs. Gunda Mahr of Germany; her mother-in-law, Mrs. Ella Wilson of Zionville; one sister, Heidi Williams and her children, Caren and Brian, of San Antonio, Texas; and one brother, Ed Hagan and wife, Cindy, of El Paso, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her father-in-law, Joe Wilson.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Annie Rebecca May Dishman

Mrs. Annie Rebecca May Dishman, 89, of Howard Edmisten Road, Sugar Grove, died Friday evening, March 4, 2005, at the home of her daughter in Statesville, N.C.

She was born Sept. 6, 1915 in Watauga County, a daughter of James and Belle Guy May.

Mrs. Dishman was a member of the Timber Ridge Baptist Church and was a homemaker.

Survivors include two sons, George Clint Dishman and wife, Shelley, of Newport, Tenn. and Bruce Dishman and wife, Betty, of Boone; one daughter, Glenda Dancy and husband, Archie, of Statesville, N.C.; four grandsons, Scott Dancy of Sugar Grove, Steve Dancy of the Timber Ridge community of Sugar Grove, Preston Dishman of Sonoma, Calif. and Jason Dancy of Statesville; two granddaughters, Cindy Deviney of Statesville and Marcie Dishman of Ft. Meyers, Fla. Mrs. Dishman will be greatly missed by her great-grandchildren, Jacob, Luke and Landon.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dave Dishman; and two brothers, Spencer and Dexter May.

Services were conducted Sunday evening at 6 o’clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home, officiated by the Rev. Derick Wilson, the Rev. Ray Greene and the Rev. Eric Cornett. The family received friends Sunday afternoon from 4:30-6 p.m., prior to the services, at the funeral home.

Graveside services will be conducted Monday morning at 11 o’clock at the Greene Family Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Greene Cemetery Fund, in care of Ivan Dishman, 1360 Peoria Road, Sugar Grove, N.C. 28679.

Roy G. Greene

Mr. Roy G. Greene, 54, of Tarboro, N.C., died Sunday, March 6, 2005.

He was born in Watauga County to Roey W. Greene and Texie Greene.

Survivors include his wife, Dianne Greene; a daughter, Tara McDonald and husband, Scott, of Ayden, N.C.; his mother, Texie M. Greene of Deep Gap, N.C.; a step-daughter, Cynthia Smith of Landover, Md.; and two step-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Wednesday morning at 11 o’clock at Carlisle Funeral Home with the Rev. Jessie Blalock officiating.

The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7-8 p.m. at Carlisle Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Ricky Everett Shook

Ricky Everett Shook, 5 month old son of Jody Charlene Shook of Morganton, N.C., died Thursday, March 3, 2005, at the University of North Carolina Children’s Hospital in Chapel Hill.

He was born Sept. 23, 2004, in Burke County.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his grandparents, Hillie (Bynum) and Christine Shook of Morganton; great-grandmother, Lucille Shook of Newland, N.C.; uncles, Richard and Bynum Shook, both of Morganton; cousins, Asia Shook and Daliyha Burgess, both of Morganton; and numerous other family members.

Services will be conducted Monday evening at 7 p.m. from the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with the Rev. Joe Ingham officiating. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., prior to the service, at the funeral home. Interment and graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday morning, in the Banner Elk Cemetery.

Russell Lafayette Thomas

Mr. Russell Lafayette Thomas, 83, of North Fork Road, Zionville, died Thursday evening, March 3, 2005, at Watauga Medical Center.

He was born April 4, 1921 in Watauga County, a son of Spencer and Mae Greene Thomas.

Mr. Thomas was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. He was a life-long member of Union Baptist Church and was a farmer.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita Reese Thomas; and one brother, Floyd Thomas and wife, Catherine, of Zionville. A number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Services were conducted Sunday afternoon at Union Baptist Church in Zionville, officiated by the Rev. Chuck Morefield and the Rev. Derick Wilson. Burial followed in the Union Baptist Church Cemetery. The family received friends at the church prior to the services.

Memorials may be made to the Union Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, in care of Frank Thomas, 4913 Old U.S. Highway 421, Zionville, N.C. 28607.

Charles Edward Quinn

Mr. Charles Edward Quinn, 68, of Boone, died Sunday, March 6, 2005,  at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. 

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Boone.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Quinn, and three children, Tricia Cottingham of Kernersville, N.C., Charles Quinn Jr., of Boone, N.C., and Meg Quinn of Greenville, S.C.;  and six grandchildren.

Funeral plans are incomplete and will be announced later.
