Duck Pond diving

Several Appalachian State University students dive in the Duck Pond during the 2005 Polar Plunge Thursday on campus. Proceeds from the event benefit the Special Olympics of Watauga County. Tuesday crash kills two

Two Creston teens died Tuesday afternoon when their vehicle sheared off a power pole, left the road and slammed into a tree near Pottertown and Snyder Branch roads.

Morning traffic stalled

A northbound tractor-trailer took a spill while rounding the final curve outside Boone on U.S.  321 Monday morning, stalling commuter traffic and sending its driver to the Watauga Medical Center with what the North Carolina Highway Patrol reported were minor injuries. An unidentified highway patrol trooper on the scene said the cause of the crash, which occurred just after 7 a.m., was still under investigation. Boone Fire Department personnel also responded to the call.
