Joseph Richard Greer
Joseph Richard Greer, 19, of 193 Brown Hollow Road, Creston, died Tuesday evening, Feb. 22, 2005, at Johnson City Medical Center.
He was born June 7, 1985, in Boone, Watauga County, to Kenneth and Denise McMillan Greer. He was an employee of Greer Paving Company.
Survivors include his father and mother, Kenneth and Denise Greer, of Creston; two brothers, Shawn Isaacs and wife, Amy, of Durham and James Stanley of Creston; maternal grandparents, Boyd and Helen Parlier of Vilas; and a nephew, Keith Stanley of Trade, Tenn. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Frank and Docia Greer.
Funeral Services were conducted this afternoon (Friday) at 2 p.m. at Sutherland Missionary Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Herbert McCoy. Burial followed in the Sutherland Cemetery.

Edward Herman “Ed” Klevinski
Mr. Edward Herman “Ed” Klevinski, 84, of Clemmons, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005, at Bermuda Terrance Nursing & Rehab Center.
He was born Sept. 3, 1920, in Scranton, Pa., to the late Frances Matthew and Catherine Peitch Klevinski.
Mr. Klevinski was a graduate of Johnson School of Technology. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II at the Pautuxent Naval Air Test Station. Prior to enlisting in the Navy, he built landing craft for the Normandy invasion at Owens Yacht Company in Baltimore, Md. After military service, he worked for Western Electric Company in Baltimore for 38 years as a design engineer. In the late 1960’s, he transferred to the Western Electric division working on the Safeguard Antiballistic Missile Program for the Defense Department. This work brought him to Winston-Salem. His last years of work involved designing communication systems for military bases and U.S. Embassies throughout the world. He was an active member of the Isaak Walton League in Bel Air, Maryland. His many hobbies included his lifelong pursuit of model railroading.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Anne Hagaman Klevinski (daughter of the late Rev. and Mrs. Fred C. Hagaman); two sons, Mark Klevinski and wife, Dianne, of Tobaccoville and Edward Klevinski, Jr. and wife, Sami, of Clemmons; two granddaughters, Lisa Talley of Winston-Salem and Lita Crockett and husband, Steve, of Clemmons; one sister, Mrs. Julia Terry of Pueblo, Colo.; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Marion Klevinski; one brother, and three sisters.
Services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home, Kinderton Chapel, in Winston-Salem. Burial will follow in Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons.
The family will receive friends this evening (Friday) from 6-8 p.m. at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home, Kinderton Chapel, in Winston-Salem.

Edna Kilby Miller
Mrs. Edna Kilby Miller passed away Tuesday morning, Feb. 22, 2005, at the Hadlow Hospice Center in Jacksonville, Fla. 
She was born January 13, 1922 in Bina, N.C. and was married for 47 years to Blan C. Miller, who passed away in 1992. Mrs. Miller lived near her family in Jacksonville for the past 11 years, after many years’ residence in Knoxville, Tenn. and Ridgefield, N.J. She was a native of western North Carolina, where she attended Healing Springs High School and beauty college in Boone.
Mrs. Miller lived a long and full life, enjoyed traveling with her family in the United States and Europe, and took her golf clubs wherever she went.
Survivors include her son Michael and daughter Lisa and grandchildren Brad, Ashley, Ysabella, and Victoria, as well as great-grandchildren Tyler and Lexie.
She was pre-deceased by her sisters Orlean Bowers (1970) and Annie-Gene Dickson (2003), all daughters of Nelson and Belle Kilby. She will be missed by family and friends at Deermeadows (Jacksonville) and Wallace Memorial (Knoxville) Baptist Churches.
Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 11:30, at Lynnhurst-Greenwood Chapel with Dr. James McCluskey officiating. Interment will follow in Lynnhurst Cemetery. A memorial service is planned for Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m. in the Deermeadows Baptist Church Chapel in Jacksonville.

Pearl C. Ragan
Mrs. Pearl C. Ragan, 84, of Vero Beach, Fla., died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2005, at Indian River Memorial Hospital in Vero Beach.
She was born March 7, 1920, in Fredericksburg, Va. In 1977 she moved to Winter Beach, Fla. from Wilmington, Delaware.
Mrs. Ragan was a member of the First Baptist Church in Vero Beach and the Order of the Eastern Star.
Survivors include her sister, Elizabeth Cropp of Fredericksburg, Va.; four nieces, Melba Brown of Boone, Glenda Arthur of Vilas, Frances Rapp of Florida and Barbara Tuttle of Winston-Salem; and two sisters-in-law, Beulah G. Ragan and Jewel D. Ragan, both of Boone.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Luster Ragan.
Graveside services and burial were conducted Friday, Feb. 18, in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Fort Pierce, Fla.

Bobby Michael Thomas
Bobby Michael Thomas, 18, of 1911 Sutherland Road, Creston, died Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 22, 2005, in Creston.
He was born Feb. 22, 1987, in Boone, Watauga County, to David Wayne Thomas and Linda Greer Thomas. He was an employee of Greer Paving Company.
Survivors include his mother, Linda Greer Arnold and step-father, Bill Arnold, of Creston; his father, Wayne Thomas of Mountain City, Tenn.; two brothers, Mark Thomas and Brandon Arnold, both of the home; maternal grandparents, Howard and Jessie Greer of Oxford, Pa.; paternal grandmother, Wilma Reece and paternal step-grandmother, Hope Arnold, both of Mountain City. He is also survived by a number of aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Bobby Thomas.

Janiceteen Collier Anderson
Mrs. Janiceteen Collier Anderson, 57, of 359 Tyler Lane, Boone, died Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 22, 2005, at home.
She was born July 28, 1947, in Fremont, Wilson County, to the late Sammy and Jessie Williamson Collier.
Mrs. Anderson was a graduate of Selma High School and was owner/operator of Janice Anderson Realty in Boone. She served on the board of directors of Carroll Roberson Ministries and attended Perkinsville Baptist Church. She was a recipient of the Watauga County “Woman of the Month” award.
Survivors include her husband, Robert L. “Bob” Anderson; one daughter, Wendy Raines of Boone; one brother, Sammy Gene Collier of Selma; and three sisters, Marie Williamson of Four Oaks, Bonnie Stebbins and Ida Lee Brown, both of Selma.
Services will be conducted Saturday night at 8 o’clock at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel, with Carroll Roberson officiating.
Private entombment will be conducted Sunday at Woodlawn Mausoleum in Blowing Rock.
The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6:30-8 p.m., at the funeral home, prior to the service.

Robert Thomas Burroughs
Mr. Robert Thomas Burroughs, 82, died Feb. 12, 2005 in St. Mary’s Hospital in Decatur, Illinois.
He was born April 11, 1922 in Decatur, the son of James E. and Eva (Smith) Burroughs. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a retired histologist. He married Mary Kathryn Carmean January 11, 1946 in Decatur, and she preceded him in death in September of 1983.
He is survived by his children, Cathy Wroughton and husband, Doug, of St. Marys, Georgia, Carolyn Wanzer and husband, George, of Newland, North Carolina, Jane Lustig and husband, Darryl, of South Barrington, Illinois, and Bruce Burroughs and wife, Julie, of Eugene, Oregon; grandchildren, Robert Dennis of Jackson, Michigan, Mark Dennis of Bloomington, Illinois, Tim Burroughs of Denver, Colorado, Dan Burroughs of Denver, Colorado, Rob Burroughs of Eugene, Oregon, David Lustig of South Barrington, Illinois, and Lauren Lustig of South Barrington, Illinois; great-grandchildren, Courtney Dennis of Peotone, Illinois, Anya Robinson-Dennis of Jackson, Michigan, Lili Robinson-Dennis of Jackson, Michigan, Liam Robinson-Dennis of Jackson, Michigan, Mark James Dennis II of Bloomington, Illinois; and a sister, Jean Eva Smallwood and husband Pat of Decatur.
Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 15, 2005 at Dawson & Wikoff Colonial Chapel North in Decatur, Illinois with burial at Point Pleasant Cemetery in Long Creek.

James D. Hagaman
Mr. James Doughton Hagaman, 82, of Winston-Salem, a native and former resident of Watauga County, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2005, at Forsyth Medical Center.
He was born Feb. 28, 1922, in Vilas, to the late Rev. Fred C. Hagaman and Beulah Shell Hagaman.
Mr. Hagaman was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II, having served in North Africa and Sicily. He retired from AT&T in 1981 after 25 years of service. He was a member of Ardmore Baptist Church where he served faithfully as a Deacon and Sunday school teacher and was a past president of the Senior Citizens in Ardmore. His favorite hobby was wood working.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Daisy Greene Hagaman; two daughters, Amy Patricia Hagaman of Chicago, Illinois and Ruth Woosley and husband, Danny, of Kernersville; two grandsons, Dustin Robertson of Moscow, Idaho and Benjamin Woosley of Kernersville; four sisters, Anne Klevinski and husband, Ed, of Clemmons, Lucy Holland of Bowersville, Georgia, Sue Harmon and husband, Raymond, of Boone, and Carolyn Adams and husband, Jerry, of Sugar Grove. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, John N. Hagaman; and a sister, Mrs. Madge Harmon.
A memorial service was conducted this morning (Wednesday) at 11 a.m. at Ardmore Baptist Church, officiated by Dr. William Ireland and the Rev. Ty Talton.

Chloe Robinson Hathcock
Mrs. Chloe Robinson Hathcock, 83, of Scotland Neck, N.C., died Monday, Feb. 7, 2005.
She worked as a bookkeeper for Winfield-Watson Chevrolet in Scotland Neck for many years and was an active member of Tillery Baptist Church for 45 years.
Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Harvey L. Hathcock; daughters, Becky Osborne and husband, Gary, of Clayton and Martha Donnamaria of Holly Springs; son, Daniel “Danny” Hathcock and wife, Alice, of Scotland Neck; sisters, Grace Eggers and Hazel Wilson, both of Vilas; Helen Senters of Morganton, and Georgia Lewis of Asheville; brother, Ed Robinson of Charlotte; and two grandchildren, John Donnamaria and Kristy Donnamaria.
A graveside service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 10, at Sunnyside Cemetery in Scotland Neck. The Rev. Charles Bartholomew presided.
The family received friends from 7 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 9, at Letchworth Funeral Home in Scotland Neck.

Ruth Norris Hayes
Mrs. Ruth Virginia Norris Hayes, 74, of 2769 Elk Creek Road, Deep Gap, Triplett community, wife of the late Famon John Hayes, died Sunday evening, Feb. 20, 2005, at Blowing Rock Hospital Extended Care.
She was born July 30, 1930, in Boone, Watauga County, to the late Marvin and Ella Mae Cox Norris.
Mrs. Hayes was a graduate of Appalachian High School and a member of Bethelview United Methodist Church. She had attended Mount Ephriam Baptist Church for many years.
Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Cook and husband, Tony, of Deep Gap and Anita Cook and husband, Charles, of Boone; one granddaughter, Melody Johnson; three grandsons, Jason Cook, Anthony Cook and Nathan Cook; and one great-grandson, Zachary Cook, all of Boone; three brothers, Ralph Norris and wife, Dorothy, Ray Norris and wife, Mandy, and D.J. Norris, all of Boone. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Rhonda Norris.
Services were conducted this afternoon (Wednesday) at 2 p.m. at Mount Ephriam Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Rick Critcher. Burial followed in the Rhymer Cemetery.

Sean Michael McDaniel
Mr. Sean Michael McDaniel, 27, of Willow Run Road, Beech Mountain, died Monday evening, Feb. 21, 2005, at home.
He was born in Lakeland, Florida, Nov. 27, 1977, the son of Carol Tillman Perlaza and Billy McDaniel.
Mr. McDaniel was of the Mormon faith and worked at Ski Beech.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sisters, Carol Powell of Pennsylvania and Sharon Bagnell of Angier, N.C.; two brothers, Bill McDaniel and Robert McDaniel, both of Plant City, Fla.; and his maternal grandmother, Jeanne Tillman of Beech Mountain.
Services will be conducted Friday morning at 11 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery in Blowing Rock.

Alma W. Seehorn
Mrs. Alma Williams Seehorn, 90, of Johnson City, Tenn., a native and former resident of Watauga County, wife of the late J.L. Seehorn, died Friday, Feb. 18, 2005, at Northside Hospital.
She was born Feb. 17, 1914, in Zionville, to the late Ed and Myra Jones Williams.
Mrs. Seehorn was a graduate of Cove Creek High School and attended Appalachian State Teachers College, after which she taught at Shouns (Tenn.) Elementary School. She retired from the Washington County Clerk’s office after 30 years of service as deputy court clerk. She was a member of North Johnson County Baptist Church, the American Business Women’s Club and the Washington County Democratic Club. She was a 50 year member of the Maple Chapter of Eastern Star and served as a Red Cross volunteer for 10 years.
Survivors include two sons, J.L. Seehorn, Jr. and wife, Carolyn, and John Ed Seehorn and wife, Marcella, all of Johnson City; one brother, J.B. Williams and wife, Lena, of Black Mountain; and one sister, Maude “Tincy” Wilson and husband, Clyde, of Boone; four grandchildren, Tammy Dunnigan and Kelly Gilliam, both of Boone; Jay Seehorn and John Ed Seehorn, Jr., both of Johnson City. She is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews; and her special caregiver, Jane Mbarathi.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Hite Williams and Ralph Williams; three sisters, Ruby Dishman, Madge Reece and Louise Thomas and a granddaughter, Kim Seehorn Whitman.
Services were conducted Sunday afternoon, Feb. 20, at 3 p.m. at Appalachian Funeral Home Chapel in Johnson City, officiated by the Rev. Wiley Rutledge. Burial followed in Monte Vista Memorial Park in Johnson City.

Anna Mae Sherwood
Miss Anna Mae Sherwood, 100, passed away Feb. 16, 2005, after a short illness, under the gentle care of Hospice of Vero Beach, Florida.
She was born in Nez Perce County, Idaho, on Nov. 2, 1904.
Miss Sherwood was one of eight children born to Edmond Foster and Ella Glenn Sherwood. She was a graduate of Cove Creek High School and received her formal education from Appalachian State Teachers College. She began her teaching career at the Old Walnut Grove School and then to Watauga County where she taught for 30 years at Cove Creek Elementary School. In 1957 she moved to Vero Beach, Florida and continued teaching for 20 more years. She taught a total of 50 years using her many talents for her beloved students.
Miss Sherwood was a former member of Cove Creek Baptist Church and was currently a member of First Baptist Church of Vero Beach, Fla. She taught Sunday School classes, G.A.’s and Training Union. She was active throughout her life contributing to church activities. She also belonged to the choir at both Cove Creek Baptist Church in North Carolina and First Baptist Church in Vero Beach, Fla.
Her interests and hobbies were varied during her life. She came from a musical family and played the piano well. She loved to sing. Reading was an enjoyable pastime as were her flower gardens and beautiful lawn. She was skilled in sewing, knitting, quilt making and interior decorating. She generously used her talents for herself and especially for others. She had many friends.
Survivors include one brother, James Sherwood and wife, Johnnie, of Vero Beach, Fla.; and one sister, Dora Dean Sherwood Stalcup of Greenville, Tenn.
Miss Sherwood was the guardian of three nieces, Shirley Madron Stephens of Mountain City, Tenn., Joy Madron Wilson of Marion, N.C. and Carolyn Madron Asmussen of Vero Beach, Fla. She is also survived by other nieces and nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews. She was a beloved aunt.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Gordon Wiley Sherwood and Glenn Foster Sherwood; two sisters, Vera Sherwood Yount and Mary Lee Sherwood Madron.
A sharing service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 26, at Cove Creek Baptist Church in Cove Creek, at 10 a.m. Her first cousin, Cecil Glenn will officiate and interment will follow in the Cove Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that friends honor Miss Sherwood with contributions to Cove Creek Baptist Church or Hospice.

Jessie Guthrie Lindau
Mrs. Jessie Guthrie Lindau passed away Feb. 10, 2005, after an extended illness.
She was born Dec. 8. 1918 in Mullin, Texas. She came from a large farming family. Mrs. Lindau obtained her degree in Home Economics and later obtained certification as an elementary school teacher. She taught second grade for many years and after retirement, she taught Laubach reading instruction to adults. She volunteered for the Red Cross for many years.
She was skilled in all of the homemaking arts. She was an excellent teacher of these arts to family members. She was a patient and kind teacher and had a wonderful sense of humor which she maintained until her death. Family members will remember her through the many quilts, pillows, and afghans she made.
She was a loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother and will be missed by her children, grandchildren, in-laws and friends.
Survivors include her children, Bill Lindau and Roberta Lindau, and her grandchildren, Helen Lindau, Eric Lindau and Ivan Lindau.
Joanne Hoy Miller
Mrs. Sarah Joanne Hoy Miller, 79, of Charlotte, and 299 Joe J. Miller Road, Boone, wife of the late Glenn Russell Miller, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2005, in Charlotte.
She was born Sept. 20, 1925, in Woodland, Calif., to the late Chris and Laveta Carpenter Hoy.
Mrs. Miller was a retired R.N. from Anchorage Medical Center in Anchorage, Alaska. She was a member of Deerfield United Methodist Church where she was active in the Christian Women’s group and served as a library volunteer. She was also an active volunteer at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
Survivors include one daughter, Ms. Marcia Clay of Charlotte; one son, Edmond Miller and wife, Rebecca, of Gastonia; three grandchildren, Christine Clay of Durham and Russell Miller and Joseph Miller, both of Gastonia; one sister, Barbara Rietzke of Woodland, Calif.
Services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Deerfield United Methodist Church, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Robert Peurifoy. Burial followed in Bethelview United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Alma W. Seehorn
Mrs. Alma W. Seehorn, 90, died Friday, Feb. 18, 2005, at Northside Hospital.
She was a native of Watauga County, a daughter of the late Ed and Myra Williams.

Arthur F. Quickenton
Mr. Arthur Frederick Quickenton, 77, of 235 Meadow Hill Drive, Boone, died Friday morning, Feb. 18, 2005, at Watauga Medical Center.
He was born Jan. 11, 1928, in Albany, New York, to the late Arthur and Helen Carkner Quickenton.
Mr. Quickenton was a graduate of Albany High School and a retired owner and operator of Albany Travel Agency. He was also a travel consultant in the Albany area.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Jane Quackenbush Quickenton; one son, Arthur J. Quickenton of Boone.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Bernard Quickenton.
A funeral Mass will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 12:15 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, with Father John Schneider officiating.
The family will receive friends at the church following the service.
Hampton Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.
