Texie Greene Glenn
Mrs. Texie Greene Glenn, 93, of 496 Brown Street, Lexington, a former resident of Boone, wife of the late George Howard Glenn, died Wednesday morning, Feb. 9, 2005, at Golden Age Nursing Home in Lexington.
She was born August 27, 1911, in Carter County, Tenn., to the late Dillard Lionel and Pearl Tester Greene.
Mrs. Glenn worked as a waitress at the former Blue Bell Diner in Boone and was a member of Victory Baptist Church in Lexington.
Survivors include three sons, Bill Glenn and wife, Wilma, and Wallace Glenn, all of Lexington, and George Glenn, Jr. of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Reba Moretz of Deep Gap and Mrs. Barbara Ann Humphries of Lexington; one brother, Howard Lionel Greene of Greensboro; and four sisters, Loy Edmisten of Sugar Grove; Lora Hollar of Vilas; Ruth Swift of Liberty and Belva McCuiston of High Point. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a son, Harold Dean Glenn; one daughter, Mabel Jean Moretz; five brothers, Fred Greene, Floyd Greene, Frank Greene, Roby Greene and Clyde Greene; and one sister, Mrs. Mamie Vines.
Graveside services and burial were conducted this morning (Friday) at 11 a.m. at Forest Hill Memorial Park in Lexington, officiated by the Rev. Elwood Goodman.

Richard Curtis Greene
Mr. Richard Curtis Greene, 81, of Boone Trail, Purlear, N.C., died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, at home.
He was born May 15, 1923, in the Stony Fork community of Watauga County, to the late Mansfield and Effie Wagoner Greene.
Mr. Greene was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II, having served in the 600th Bomber Squadron. He was co-owner of Greene Brothers Furniture Company in North Wilkesboro and a member of Mount Pleasant Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Charlotte Huffman Greene; two daughters, Mrs. Janet Eller of Wilkesboro and Mrs. Sandi Thomasson of Hamptonville; two sisters, Mrs. Lynette Huffman of Wilkesboro and Mrs. Holly Triplett of Charlotte; one brother, Dennis Greene and wife, Dianne, of Boone. He is also survived by four grandchildren, one great-grandchild and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Oren Greene, Rev. Macon Greene, Burl Greene and Olin Greene; and one sister, Arlene Greene.
Services were conducted Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Mike Hamby and Dr. Rick Speas. Military graveside honors and burial followed in the Mount Pleasant Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Ethel Elizabeth Hagaman Ward, 89, of 366 Kellersville Road, Banner Elk, wife of the late Charlie A. Ward, died Monday morning, Feb. 7, 2005, at Watauga Medical Center.
She was born Oct. 31, 1915, in Beech Creek, Watauga County, to the late Hardie Alexander and Lula Ella Harmon Hagaman.
Mrs. Ward was a homemaker and a member of Zion Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors include three sons, Dean Ward and wife, Martha, and Allen Ward, all of Sugar Grove and Tommy Ward of the home; one granddaughter, Melissa Soto and husband, Dan; two grandsons, Jimmy Ward and Lester Ward; and one great-grandson, Jesse Presnell, all of Sugar Grove; one sister, Mrs. Annie Oaks of Sugar Grove; and two brothers, Gilbert Hagaman of Sugar Grove and Lowell Hagaman of Kernersville. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a son, James Ward; six brothers, Gradon Hagaman, Rev. Lawrence Hagaman, John Hagaman and Robert Hagaman; and two infant brothers; and two sisters, Flora Hagaman and Rosa Ward.
Services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Zion Hill Baptist Church. The body will lie in state at the church from 1-2 p.m. Officiating will be the Rev. James Hagaman and the Rev. Quincy Norris. Burial will follow in Zion Hill Church Cemetery.
The family received friends Thursday evening from 7-8:30 p.m. at Hampton Funeral Service. At other times, friends may call at the Ward residence.

John Isaac Barron, Jr.
Mr. John Isaac Barron, Jr., 51, died unexpectedly Monday, Feb. 7, 2005.
He was born Sept. 26, 1953 in Burke County and was the first son of Dr. John I. Barron Sr. and the late Nelle Woodbury Barron.
Mr. Barron received his diploma from Virginia Episcopal School in 1972 and a Bachelor of Arts in Religion and Philosophy from St. Andrews College in 1977. He was a member of the Varsity Men’s Soccer team at both schools. He was an active member of the community involved in the Burke Youth Soccer Programs, the March of Dimes, and the Carolina Paint Horse Club. He is most well known as owner and founder of the Original Emporium Restaurant. Recently, he had been working in Caldwell County with children with special needs.
In addition to his father, he is survived by his wife, Andrea Doria Barron; their children, Raven Moira Barron, Sarah Mareiko Barron, Caitlin Nelle Barron, and Isaac Woodbury Barron, all of Morganton, N.C.; a brother, William Ellis Barron and his wife, Tehreema Mitha Barron; and their son, Maheyaar Ellis Barron of Bethesda, Md.
The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6:30-8 p.m. at Sossoman Funeral Home.
A memorial service will be held at the First Baptist Church of Morganton on Saturday, Feb. 12, at 2 p.m.

Mrs. Omie Clemmie Watson Day, 89, a resident of Glenbridge, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005, at Watauga Medical Center.
She was born in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Marvin and Mattie Carlton Watson.
Mrs. Day was a member of Rock View Baptist Church and was a homemaker.
Survivors include one son, Thomas Coleman Oliver and wife, Rachel, of Boone; one daughter, Verlee Oliver of Lenoir; one granddaughter, Debbie Mason of Boone; one grandson, Allen Oliver and wife, Jenny, of Lenoir; one great-granddaughter, Lisa Oliver of Lenoir; three great-grandsons, Thomas Mason and Luke Mason, both of Boone; and Harlie Oliver of Lenoir; and one brother, Willie Watson of Lenoir. Mrs. Day is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five sisters, one brother and two grandsons.
Memorial services will be conducted Saturday evening, Feb. 12, at 8 o’clock at Rock View Baptist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Burl Jones.

Richard John “Butch” Hall
Mr. Richard John “Butch” Hall, 58, of 245 Hackett Gragg Road, Montezuma, died Jan. 25, 2005, at Johnson City (Tenn.) Medical Center.
He was born August 24, 1946, in Lowell, Mass., to the late Richard and Laura Partington Hall.
Mr. Hall was a general construction carpenter.
Survivors include his former wife, Priscilla Johns; one daughter, Kenyon Hall; and one son, Justin Hall, all of Sugar Grove; and a sister, Lillian Boyden, of Brockton, Mass.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert William Hall and a sister, Lourine Logan.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Feb. 12, at 3 p.m. at Banner Elk United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Bud Howell officiating.

Pauline Reece Johnson
Mrs. Pauline Elizabeth Reece Johnson, 69, of 4240 Meat Camp Road, Todd, died Sunday morning, Feb. 6, 2005, at home.
She was born Sept. 18, 1935, in Trade, Johnson County, Tenn., to the late Lee Oscar and Maude Brown Reece.
Mrs. Johnson was a graduate of Johnson County High School and retired from Shadowline, Inc. after 42 years of service as a supervisor and seamstress. She was a member of Proffit’s Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, John H. Johnson; and one son, Wayne Johnson, both of the home; one daughter, Treva Jones and husband, Douglas; and one grandson, Darius Jones, all of Boone; five sisters, Emogene Miller and husband, Bob, and Virginia Oliver and husband, Albert, all of Zionville; Louise May and husband, Arvilee, of Nottingham, Pa.; Faye Warren and husband, Claude, and Rebecca Wilson and husband, Kenny, all of Mountain City, Tenn.; three brothers, Bobby Reece and Fred Reece, both of Trade, Tenn. and Lynn Reece and wife, Pat, of Zionville. She is also survived by a number of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
Services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Proffit’s Grove Baptist Church. The body will in state at the church from 1-2 p.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Delmar James, the Rev. Herbert McCoy and the Rev. Carl Johnson. Burial will follow in Proffit’s Grove Church Cemetery.

Roy S. Kirk
Mr. Roy Summerell Kirk, 89, of Appalachian Brian Estates, Boone, died Monday morning, Feb. 7, 2005 at Watauga Medical Center.
He was born in Rowan County, a son of the late Hinton and Mabel Lipe Kirk.
Mr. Kirk was a sales representative for Pittsylvania Hardware, and was a veteran of World War II, having served as a navigator in the Army Air Corps. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Boone, and was a former member of both Kimball Lutheran Church in Kannapolis and St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in China Grove, where he served on the Church Council. Mr. Kirk was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, Civitan, and had previously been a member of a Barbershop Quartet.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret P. Kirk; four daughters, Judy Sink and husband, Sam, of Boone; Beth Shoffner and husband, Bob, of Hickory; Lee Ann Michael and husband, Joe, of Burlington; and Patty Hinshaw of Binghamton, New York; one sister, Angie Sides of Sherrills Ford; four granddaughters, Amy Sink of Pretoria, South Africa, Adrienne Shoffner of Tampa, Fla., Lauren Shoffner of Mebane, N.C., and Amy Michael of Wilmington; three grandsons, Damon Hinshaw of Arlington, Va., Darren Sink of Durham, N.C. and Joseph Michael of Raleigh; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, George Ray Kirk, Ralph Kirk, Raymond Kirk, Robert Kirk, and Richard Kirk.
Graveside services and burial will be conducted Thursday morning at 10:15 at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at Grace Lutheran Church at 11 o’clock. Officiating will be the Rev. Tim Smith. The family will receive friends Thursday immediately following the services at Grace Lutheran Church.

Robert Eugene “Bob” Moren
Mr. Robert Eugene “Bob” Moren, 86, of Robin Lane, Boone, died Thursday evening, Feb. 3, 2005 at his home.
He was born Nov. 20, 1918 in Pittsburg, Pa., a son of Arthur Eugene and Mabel Mullin.
Mr. Moren was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church. After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he retired with more than 30 years service as an engineer with Western Electric. Mr. Moren was an avid, life long ham radio operator. He will be missed and always remembered by those who knew and loved him.
Survivors include his loving companion, Dr. Mildred Luckhardt; one daughter, Mary Moren of Hickory; three sons, Dr. Arthur Moren and wife, Dr. Margo Heydt, of Cincinnati, Ohio; Emery Moren and wife, Teresa, of Lexington, N.C. and Christopher Moren and wife, Bonnie, of Gaithersburg, Md.; one step-daughter, Dr. Joan Cook Luckhardt and her husband, Dr. Robert Ticker, of Dayton, New Jersey; and three step-sons, John Luckhardt of McMurray, Pa., William Wade Luckhardt and wife, Ruby, of Danville, Calif., and Louis Conrad Luckhardt of Ennis, Texas. Seven grandchildren, five step-grandchildren and one step-great-granddaughter also survive.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Cardwell Moren.
A memorial service will be celebrated Saturday afternoon, Feb. 12th at 1 o’clock at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, officiated by Father John Schneider. The family will receive friends Saturday afternoon from noon until 1 o’clock, prior to the service, at the church. Entombment will follow at the St. Elizabeth Columbarium.

Walter Donald Sawtelle
Mr. Walter Donald Sawtelle, 80, of 479 Mount Paron Road, Deep Gap, died Tuesday morning, Feb. 8, 2005, at Watauga Medical Center.
He was born March 23, 1924, in Springfield, Mass., to the late Donald Herbert and Dora Jahn Sawtelle.
Mr. Sawtelle was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a retired supervisor and office manager from New England Telephone & Telegraph in Providence, Rhode Island.
Survivors include three daughters, Judith Stephens and husband, Page, of Charlotte; Cynthia Knapp and husband, George, of Brooklin, Maine and Ms. Nancy Sawtelle Wogen of Coburg, Ore.; two granddaughters, Jennifer Knapp of San Francisco, Calif. and Liz Knapp of Derby Line, Vermont; two grandsons, Graham Stephens and Christian Stephens, both of Charlotte; and one sister-in-law, Mrs. Ruth Nelson of West Glover, Vermont.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan Ephraimson Sawtelle.
A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.

She was born in Brooklyn, New York, April 16, 1941, a daughter of the late Thomas H. and Beatrice Billings Vatcher.
Mrs. Vatcher was a pricing manager for K-Mart and was of the Catholic faith.
Survivors include her husband, Richard Vatcher; two step-daughters, Ellen Rice of Lady Lake, Fla. and Allyson Smith of Greenwood Lake, N.Y.; one sister, Marilyn; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mr. Gary Edward Eggers, 52, of Mountain Dale Road, Vilas, died Friday morning, Feb. 4, 2005 at his home.
He was born Feb. 17, 1952 in Watauga County, a son of Viola Pearl Cornett Eggers and the late Floyd Eggers.
Mr. Eggers served in the U.S. Army. He was of the Baptist faith and was employed as a house painter.
Survivors include his wife, Jinnie Spurlock Eggers; two daughters, Samantha and Erin Eggers, both of Euclid, Ohio; his mother, Viola Pearl Cornett Eggers of Zionville; and two sisters, Ruth Ann Wagner of Cleveland, Ohio and Deanie Dishman and her husband, Glenn David, of Zionville.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by one brother, Herbert Lee Eggers and his brother-in-law, Leonard Wagner.
Services will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Mountain Dale Missionary Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Eric Cornett and Mr. Clint Cornett. Mrs. Anna Mae Popp Greene, 74, of 1440 Joe Shoemaker Road, Vilas, died Sunday morning, Feb. 6, 2005, at Blowing Rock Hospital.
She was born March 31, 1930, in Nanty Glo, Cambria County, Pa., to the late Louis and Anna Fabert Popp.
Mrs. Greene was a homemaker. She was of the Presbyterian faith and attended Cove Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Billy Lee Greene; one daughter, Sharon Gorjup and husband, Robert, of Menton-On-The-Lake, Ohio; one granddaughter, Desiree Gorjup, of Menton-On-The-Lake; two sisters, Emma Raynish of Ambridge, Pa. and Georgetta Vrana of Newark, Ohio; two brothers, Richard Fabert and Jimmy Fabert, both of Pittsburgh, Pa. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Violet Capp and Mary Slovich.
Services will be conducted Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will in state from 6-7:30 p.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Gerald Adams.
Graveside services and burial will be conducted Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. at Cove Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

James Loyd McGrady
Mr. James Loyd McGrady, 60, of Cane Creek Road, McGrady, N.C., died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
He was born in Wilkes County, Aug. 7, 1944, to Claude Harley and Ruby Felts McGrady.
Mr. McGrady was employed at the N.C. Department of Transportation. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War.
Survivors include two daughters, Pamela Ann Wilcox and husband, Tim, of West Jefferson and Kimberly Dawn Scott and husband, Tommy, of Cleveland; his mother, Ruby Felts Royal of McGrady, N.C.; two sisters, Wanda Teague and Lois Lane, both of McGrady, N.C.; two grandchildren, Tasha Ann Wyatt and Kindra Dawn Wilcox; two step-grandchildren, Tina Hope Wilcox and Travis Wendell Wilcox; and four nephews and two nieces.

Edward Charles Rodgers
Mr. Edward Charles Rodgers, 60, of Devils Lake Drive, Seven Devils, died Saturday night, Feb. 5, 2005, at Watauga Medical Center.
He was born in Worcester, MA, a son of Annette Rodgers Keenan and the late Edward M. Rodgers.
Mr. Rodgers was a retired police officer, having worked with the Shrewsbury Police Department. He was a member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Linville and served on the Fire and Safety Committee in the town of Seven Devils.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Rodgers; one daughter, Maura Rodgers of Vancouver, British Columbia; four sons, Michael Rodgers of Worcester, MA, John Rodgers and Tracy Rodgers, both of Lakeworth, Fla., and Jason Rodgers of the U.S. Navy; his mother, Annette Rodgers Keenan of Wellington, Fla.; and one sister, Carolyn Reid of Wellington, Fla.

Joseph Howard Taylor
Mr. Joseph Howard Taylor died Friday afternoon Feb. 4, 2005, in Mount Pleasant, S.C.
Mr. Taylor was born Oct. 11, 1907, in Boone, N.C., a son of Lee Land Taylor and Genelia Emmaline Wilson Taylor.
He was the oldest living alumnus of Appalachian State University. He played in Appalachian’s first football game which was against Mountain City. Mr. Taylor was the owner of Taylor Oil Company in Mount Pleasant, a distributor for Exxon. He was a member of Hibben United Methodist Church for more than fifty years, a member of Etiwan Lodge No. 95 A.F.M. and The Lions Club. He was the widower of Edna "Jack" Coffey Taylor, of Mount Pleasant, S.C.
Mr. Taylor is survived by three daughters, Belva Hopkins and her husband, Frank, of Andover, Massachusetts, Josephine "Jodie" T. Morgan and her husband, Allan, and Jacqueline "Jackie" Taylor of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; one son, Larry Steve Taylor and his wife, Nancy, of Atlanta, Georgia; 17 grandchildren, Mark T. Hopkins, Nina Hopkins Griffeth, Tanya Hopkins Lee, Harriet S. Hopkins, Catherine W. Hopkins Walsh, Anne C. Hopkins, William Spence Hopkins, Justin R. Morgan, Rhett Joseph Morgan, Chad A. Morgan, Jason F. Taylor, Shannon J. Taylor, Cynthia T. Duval, Lt. Col. Brad Taylor, L. Scott Taylor, Rebecca T. Heery, Mary Beirne Taylor; and 24 great-grandchildren; one sister, Alice Taylor Thomas of Medford, Oregon, and many nieces and nephews.
The relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral services Tuesday morning, Feb. 8, in Hibben United Methodist Church, 690 Coleman Blvd., Mt. Pleasant, S.C. at 10 o’clock. Interment will be in Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens.
Friends may call at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel, Monday afternoon from 4 to 6 p.m.

Phillip George Tester
Mr. Phillip George Tester, 80, a former resident of Ivy Terrace Apts., Boone, died Saturday night, Feb. 5, 2005, at Life Care Center in Banner Elk.
He was born April 4, 1924, in Avery County, to the late Samuel and Isabelle Davis Tester. Mr. Tester was a retired self-employed farm laborer.
Survivors include one brother, Joseph “Buddy” Walls, of South Carolina; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Hallman Tester; and two brothers, Walter Tester and William Tester.
Graveside services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Skyland Cemetery, with the Rev. Mike Townsend officiating.
The family has requested no food or flowers. Memorial contributions may be made to the Tester family, in care of Lee Roy Tester, 1045 Justus Road, Banner Elk, N.C. 28604.
