Jan. 28:

Earl William Hughes

Mr. Earl William Hughes, 79, of Jerry’s Creek, Newland, the Roaring Creek Community, died Tuesday night, Jan. 25, 2005 at the Johnson City Medical Center.

He was born in Avery County, July 10, 1925, a son of the late Clay and Myra Gouge Hughes.

Mr. Hughes was retired from Air Preheater of Marion, and was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Navy. He was an avid fisherman, and was a member and Deacon of the Roaring Creek Freewill Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Trusty Buchanan Hughes; six sisters, Helen Burleson of Newland, Effie Woody and husband, Phillip, of Newland, Stell Wilson and husband, Jessie, of Waxhaw, Myrtle Billings and husband, Emory, of New Windsor, Maryland, Kay Freeman and husband, Richard, of Spruce Pine, and Doris Crowder and husband, Leonard, of Spruce Pine; two brothers, Ralph Hughes and wife, Minnie, of Fairview, Garrett Hughes and wife, Marylou, of Swannanoa; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Vearl Hughes.

Services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Roaring Creek Freewill Baptist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Willard Pless and Rev. Ken Lance. Burial will follow in the Hughes Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday afternoon from 1-2 p.m. at the church prior to the service.

Albert Madley

Mr. Albert Madley, 66, of Boone, died Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2005, at Watauga Medical Center.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Robinette Madley; two daughters, Jill Madley Barr and husband, Douglas, of South Lake Tahoe, Calif. and Galax, Va. and Kelly Madley of Boone; one grandson, Preston Madley of Boone; one brother, Ed Madley and wife, Shirley, of Clearwater, Fla.; two sisters, Jean Caley and husband, Herb, and Blanche Heath, all of Dunedin, Fla. He is also survived by his beloved dog, Mickey.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.

Harold Leo Manes

Mr. Harold Leo Manes, U.S. Air Force Retired, 85,  of Glenbridge Health Care in Boone, died Thursday morning, Jan. 27, 2005, at the Watauga Medical Center in Boone.

He was born Nov. 26, 1919 in Grandfield, Okla., a son of Edgar and Mary Vosburgh Manes.

Mr. Manes retired with 20 years service from the U.S. Air Force as a Master Sergeant Flight Chief. After his military career, he was a real estate agent. He was a resident of Apopka, Fla. for 35 years before moving to Boone.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Dorothy Helen St. John Manes; one daughter, Barbara Payne and husband, William, of Boone; three grandchildren, William Payne, Susan Koressel and husband, Brian, and Lisa Randa and husband, Burke, and one great-granddaughter, Taylor Gray Randa, all of Orlando, Fla.; two sisters, Lou Crowe and husband, T.G., of Graham, Texas, Doris Lewis of Temple, Okla.; one brother, Boyd Manes of Banning, Calif.; his brother-in-law, Warren St. John of Iron Mountain, Mich.; and one sister-in-law, Marie Manes of Grand Junction, Colo.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Marchetti; and two brothers, Truman and Eldon Manes.

Graveside services will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock at Greenwood Cemetery in Apopka, Fla., officiated by the Rev. Henry Cribb, Jr. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 1-1:30 at Loomis Funeral Home in Apopka.

Charles F. McClung

Mr. Charles F. McClung of Maiden, Mass., died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, in Maiden.

Mr. McClung was a World War II Army Veteran, and was a member of the Amvets Chapter 1 of Roslindale. He was the son-in-law of the late Roy and Rebecca Anderson.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Lettie Anderson McClung; three daughters, Carole Davide of Medford, Rebecca McHugh and husband, Michael, of Medford, and Pamela Eichner and husband, Thomas, of Hudson, New Hampshire; two sons, Donald McClung and wife, Terry, of Somerville, and Charles Roy McClung and wife, Jean, of Georgetown; two sisters, Natalie Ward and Phyllis Brunetto of New Hampshire; ten grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services were conducted Friday morning at 10:30 a.m. at the Frank H. Carr Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Blue Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Youville Hospital, 1575 Cambridge Street, Cambridge, MA 02142.

Faye Brown Miller

Mrs. Faye Brown Miller, 82, of 2612 Meat Camp Road, Boone, wife of the late Raymond Alfred Miller, died Thursday afternoon, Jan. 27, 2005, at home.

She was born Oct. 18, 1922, in Zionville, Watauga County, to the late Wilson Harve and Emma Winebarger Brown.

Mrs. Miller was a retired housekeeper from Hound Ears Resort and the Cardinal Motel and a homemaker. She was a member of Zionville Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Nadine Nichols and husband, William; one granddaughter, Michele Nichols, and one grandson, Michael Nichols, all of North Wilkesboro; two brothers, Jack Brown and wife, Della, of Zionville and Ted Brown of Mountain City, Tenn.; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Ann Miller and Mrs. Maggie Miller, both of Todd; and a special cousin, Pearl Winebarger of Boone. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Miller and his wife, Shelby Billings Miller; two sisters, Mrs. Maude Reece and Elizabeth “Lizzie” Brown; and two brothers, Frank Brown and Wade Brown.

Services will be conducted Saturday night at 8 o’clock at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state from 6-8 p.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Carl Johnson and the Rev. Delmar James.

Graveside services and burial will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens.

The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Hampton Funeral Service. At other times, friends may call at the Miller residence in Boone.

Jan. 26:

Eloise Jameson Bagley

Mrs. Eloise Jameson Bagley, 86, of Lakeland, Fla., died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005, at her residence in Lakeland, Fla.
She was born in Hillsborough County, Fla., March 6, 1918, and was a fourth generation Floridian.
Mrs. Bagley was married to the late John Paul Bagley of Waycross, Ga. on Dec. 12, 1945, and they lived in Tampa, Fla. until 1959. They moved to Boone, N.C., where she worked in the Registrar's Office at Appalachian State Teachers College until 1965. They then moved to Morganton, N.C. and were there until 1969 at which time they moved to Spartanburg, S.C. Mrs. Bagley retired as an Administrative Clerk from Spartanburg General Hospital. Her husband passed away June 30, 1985 and she moved to Lakeland, Fla. in 1988.
Survivors include one son, John Paul Bagley II and his significant other, Joanne Meil, of Ft. Myers, Fla.; one daughter, Marsha Bagley Phillips and husband, Mike, of Lakeland, Fla.; two sisters, Jackie Parkerson and husband, Warren, of Clarkesville, Ga. and Betty Law and husband, Max, of Land O Lakes, Fla.; three grandchildren, Erin Bagley of Orlando, Fla., Candice Phillips of Lakeland, Fla., and Victoria Starr Phillips of Charleston, S.C.; one great-grandson, Robbie Doucette of Lakeland, Fla.
Services were held Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church at the Mall with the Rev. Doug Kirk officiating. Interment will be at Garden of Memories in Tampa, Fla.
Arrangements are being handled by Central Florida Casket Store & Funeral Chapel, in Lakeland, Fla.

 

Patrick William Earles

Mr. Patrick William Earles, 86, of 125 Grassy Knoll Way, Blowing Rock, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, at his residence.
He was born March 17, 1918, in Detroit, Michigan, to the late John Wilburn and Mary Elizabeth Hush Earles.
Mr. Earles was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a retired machinist from Chrysler Corporation's missile program.
Survivors include his wife, Annegret Michaelis Earles; one daughter, Pamela Williams and husband, Allan, of Lexington, Ky.; two grandsons, Adam Patrick Melton and Trevor Melton, both of Fort Collins, Colo.; and a sister, Mrs. Carrie Kashinsky, of Harrison Township, Mich.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Richard John "Butch" Hall

Mr. Richard John "Butch" Hall, 58, of 245 Hackett Gragg Road, Montezuma, died Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 25, 2005, at Johnson City (Tenn.) Medical Center.
He was born Aug. 24, 1946, in Lowell, Mass., to the late Richard and Laura Partington Hall.
Mr. Hall was a general construction carpenter.
Survivors include his former wife, Patricia Johns; one daughter, Kenyon Hall; and one son, Justin Hall, all of Sugar Grove; and a sister, Lillian Boyden of Brockton, Mass.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert William Hall; and a sister, Lourine Logan.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Kimberly Renee Smith

Ms. Kimberly Renee Smith, 43, of Claude Isaacs Road, Elk Park, N.C., died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005, at her residence.
She was the daughter of Shirley Darnell and the late Delbert Patrick.
Ms. Smith worked as a secretary for Lowes Hardware.
In addition to her mother, Shirley Darnell of Lenoir, survivors include her three sons, Brian, Andy and Jonathon Smith of Elk Park; and sisters, Deborah Calhoun of Minneapolis, Teresa Greene of Deep Gap and Tammy Moody of Heaton.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gary Smith.
Family and friends will gather at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Newland, Wednesday morning at 10 a.m. Interment will follow in the Cranberry Cemetery with the Rev. Buzz Beers officiating.

Finnie Presnell Ward

Mrs. Finnie Presnell Ward, 84, of Hartley Road, Mocksville, N.C., died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, at her home.
She was born May 5, 1920 in Watauga County, the daughter of the late Oliver Jerome and Mary Hicks Presnell.
Mrs. Ward was a homemaker and a member of Heavenbound Full Gospel Church. On Nov. 25, 1944, she married William Ward.
Survivors include her husband, William Ward; four sons, Junior Ward and wife, Dianne, of Lexington, N.C., Johnny Ward and wife, Sadie, of Deep Gap, James Ward and wife, Pat, of Mocksville, N.C., and Dewey Ward and wife, Cindy, of Johnson City, Tenn.; two daughters, Reda Icenhour and husband, Dean, of Gold Hill, N.C. and Leda Winebarger and husband, Butch, of Todd, N.C.; a sister, Beulah Presnell of Johnson City, Tenn.; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. at the Heavenbound Full Gospel Church in Mocksville with the Rev. Harvey Presnell and the Rev. Wesley Ward officiating. She will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will be in the William P. Ward Cemetery in Stony Fork, N.C.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7-9 p.m. at the Davie Funeral Service Chapel in Mocksville.

Jan. 24:

Ned Jackson Norris

Mr. Ned Jackson Norris, 85, of Salisbury, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005, at the Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation following a period of declining health.

He was born Oct. 25, 1919 in Watauga County, a son of Jack Ephraim and Maggie Hardy Norris.

Mr. Norris was educated in the Watauga County Schools and served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II. He retired in 1982 as manager of the T.M. Mayfield and Company Insurance Adjusters with 25 years of service. He was a member of the Milford Hills Baptist Church where he served as chairman of the Board of Deacons, and as Sunday School Superintendent. He was a member of the Harold Jarret Post #442 of the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Ilene McGhee Norris; one son, J. Eric Norris of Salisbury; and three sisters, Opal Christian of Bristol, Tenn., Leo Hartley of Bristol, Va. and Mavis Callaway of Fayetteville, Ga. Two grandchildren also survive.

He was preceded in death by a son, Mark Todd Norris; and locally by a brother, Guy Norris.

Services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Milford Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry C. Allen officiating. Graveside services with Military Honors by the Rowan County Veterans Council will follow in Rowan Memorial Park.

The family suggests memorials to the Milford Hill Baptist Church, 1238 East Colonial Drive, Salisbury, N.C. 28144; to the Rowan Regional Home Health and Hospice, 130 Mocksville Avenue, Salisbury, N.C. 28144; or to the Rowan County Relay for Life, Salisbury, N.C. 28144.

Marvin Dale Greene

Mr. Marvin Dale Greene, 40, of Dick Phillips Road, Fleetwood, formerly of Deep Gap, died Thursday morning, Jan. 20, 2005, at home.

He was born Jan. 20, 1965, in Watauga County, a son of Mrs. Marjorie Goulds Greene and the late Newland Greene.

Survivors include one son, Toby Greene and wife, Candice, of Fleetwood; two daughters, Danielle Greene and Ashley Greene, both of Fleetwood; one grandson, Joshua Greene of Fleetwood; his mother, Marjorie Goulds Greene of Deep Gap; two brothers, Barry Wayne Greene of Deep Gap and Jimmy Dean Greene of Lenoir; one sister, Melba Carter and husband, Doug, of Boone.

He was preceded in death by his father, Newland Harvey Greene; one brother, Allen Greene; and a sister, Paula Greene.

Services will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel. The body will lie in state from 1-2 p.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Andy Watson. Burial will follow in the Greene Family Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday afternoon from 1-2 p.m., prior to the service at the funeral home.

Leslie F. McDougal

Mrs. Leslie Ford McDougal, 37, of Indian Grave Rd., Lenoir, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, at North Carolina Baptist Hospital.

She was born on Sept. 12, 1967 in Caldwell County, to Dean Ford and Brenda Bumgarner Ford.

Mrs. McDougal attended Happy Valley Elementary School and was a graduate of Hibriten High School in 1985 and was a graduate of Mars Hill College in 1990. She was a music teacher and retired from the Burke County School System.

Survivors include her husband, Michael McDougal of Morganton, N.C.; her parents, Dean and Brenda Bumgarner Ford of Lenoir, N.C.; a sister, Elizabeth Ford Norris of Raleigh, N.C.; and also her paternal grandfather, Arlen Ford of Lenoir, N.C.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Mozelle Ford and Lena and Percy Bumgarner.

Services were conducted Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005 at Yadkin Baptist Church at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Robert Livingston and the Rev. Eddie Summerlin officiating.

The family received friends on Saturday, Jan. 22, at Yadkin Baptist Church from 4-8 p.m.

Dr. Harold S. Songer

Dr. Harold S. Songer, 77, of Louisville, Ky., died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005, at Jefferson Manor.

He was a native of Miami, Fla., a World War II Coast Guard Veteran, a member of Crescent Hill Baptist Church, and the son of the late Dorris and Ernest Songer. Dr. Songer was pastor at Cove Creek Baptist Church for five years.

Dr. Songer received a bachelors degree from the Appalachian State University and a Ph.D. from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary where he was a senior professor of New Testament Interpretation and vice president of Academic Affairs. He was chairperson and member of evaluation teams for accreditation for the Southern Association of Colleges and Universities and the Association of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada.

In 1971 he was listed as an Outstanding Educator of America and wrote the Commentary on James in the Broadman Bible Commentary and many articles for professional journals.

Survivors include his wife, Florence Rains Songer; a son, Christopher Songer; and a sister, Irene Laffe of Jacksonville, Fla.

Services will be held Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. at Crescent Hill Baptist Church, with burial in Cave Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Monday evening from 4-7 p.m. at Pearson’s Funeral Home, 149 Breckenridge Lane, Louisville, Ky.

Memorial gifts may be sent to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Myrtle Virginia Parsons Greer

Mrs. Myrtle Virginia Parsons Greer, 85, of Mitchells, Va., died Jan. 19, 2005 at Culpeper Health and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born Sept. 1, 1919 to the late James Andrew Parsons and Alice Phillips Parsons of Boone, N.C.
Survivors include four daughters, Irene Kuhn and her husband, Joe, of Tullahoma, Tenn., Ann Singletary and her husband, Tom, of Avon Park, Fla., Lois Smith and her husband, John, of Deltona, Fla., and Dottie Clatterbuck and her husband, John, of Mitchells, Va.; one son, James Greer and his wife, Sylvia, of Hot Springs, Va.; nine grandchildren, Ronald Smith of Deltona, Fla., Alison Delcore of Brunswick, Ga., Laurel Stewart of Seattle, Wash., Daniel Kuhn of Atlanta, Ga., Troy Singletary of Centreville, Va., Amber Clatterbuck of Mitchells, Va., Jeff Greer of Indianapolis, Ind., Jonathan Greer of Wilson, N.C. and Jason Greer of Atlanta, Ga.; five great-grandchildren, Monique and Angelic Carroll of Leesburg, Va., Kenny and Tommy Lindstrom of Oklahoma and Phillip Delcore of Brunswick, Ga.; and one great-great-grandchild, Kenya Carroll.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Raymond O. Greer; three brothers, four step-sisters, two step-brothers, and two granddaughters, Joann Smith and Debbie Hitt Carroll.
A funeral service will be held Saturday, Jan. 22, at 10 a.m. at Found and Sons Chapel with Pastor John Grotz officiating. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at Found and Sons Funeral Chapel, 850 Sperryville Pike, Culpeper, Va.

Eula Mae Dugger Harmon

Mrs. Eula May Dugger Harmon, 69, of Russ Norris Road, Elk Park, died Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 18, 2005, at the Johnson City Medical Center.
She was born in Carter County, Tennessee, a daughter of the late Alvin Breamer and Polly Dugger Dugger.
Mrs. Harmon was a member of Piney Grove Church of Christ. She cooked for Meals on Wheels of Avery County and was a long time volunteer at the Beech Mountain Elementary School.
Survivors include her husband, Ted Harmon; two daughters, Carolyn Parlier and husband, James, and Lisa Taylor and husband, Kenny, all of Elk Park; three grandchildren, Rickie Parlier of the home, and Summer and Christian Parlier, both of Elk Park; one sister, Margie McGuire and husband, Reed, of Aiken, S.C.; five brothers, Elmer Dugger and wife, Wilma, and Dewey Dugger and wife, Ella Mae, all of Butler, Tenn.; Milton Dugger and Earl Dugger, both of Elizabethton, Tenn., and Truman Dugger and wife, Sylvia, of Johnson City, Tenn.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Michael Harmon; two brothers, R.L. Dugger and Freemen Dugger; and one sister, Martha Harmon.
Services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2 oÕclock at the Piney Grove Church of Christ. Officiating will be the Rev. David Burnop, the Rev. Quincy Norris and the Rev. Tim Greene. Burial will follow in the Harmon Cemetery.

Shirley Kohler Peters

Mrs. Shirley Kohler Peters, 57, of Mint Hill, wife of the late Lewis E. Peters, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005, in the Harris Hospice Unit of Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.
She was born May 16, 1947, in DeKalb, Illinois, to the late Frank and Marie Kohler (Pyfer).
Mrs. Peters was a former resident of Vilas and an active member of Brushy Fork Baptist Church before moving to Charlotte in 2003, where she became a member of Hickory Gove Baptist Church. She was a former member of West Bradenton Baptist Church in Bradenton, Fla.
Survivors include two sons, Dana Francis and wife, Belinda, of Bradenton and Derrick Francis and wife, Leslie, of Mint Hill; one grandson, Dalton Wesley Francis of Bradenton; and a half-sister, Bonnie Swineheart of DeKalb, Ill.
Services were conducted Thursday at 12:00 noon at Hickory Grove Baptist Church, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Stephen Rummage. Entombment followed in Sunset Memory Gardens Mausoleum.

Charles Hubert Sally

Mr. Charles Hubert Sally, 72, of 149 Martin Lane, Boone, N.C., died unexpectedly Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2005, at his home.
He was born in Durham, N.C. on March 28, 1932, to the late Howell Jeffy Sally and Mary Nash Sally.
After graduating from Oak Grove High School in 1951, he entered the United States Air Force and served in Korea. After being honorably discharged, he attended UNC-Chapel Hill and graduated with a BS Degree in Business Administration. After 30 years with the United States Postal Service in Cocoa, Fla., he retired in 1993 to Boone.
Mr. Sally was of the Baptist faith and attended Oak Grove Baptist Church in Boone.
Survivors include one sister, Rose S. Woods and husband, James F. Woods, of Durham, N.C.; a foster sister, Juanita S. Wheelous; and a dear friend of many years, Evelyn Sapp of Boone; three nephews, Wallace R. Sally, Jr. and wife, Cheryl; Clifford J. Woods and wife, Cathy; and Steven P. Woods and wife, Julia; one foster nephew, George Wheelous, Jr. and wife, Sandra; two nieces, Barbara Sally and Marcia McFaddan; a foster niece, Paulette Richmond and husband, Gene.
He was preceded in death by his foster parents, Samuel P. and Eula S. Shaw; three brothers, Herman W. Sally, Aubrey B. Sally and W. Reid Sally, Sr.; and a foster brother-in-law, George Wheelous, Sr.
Services will be conducted Saturday morning at 11 a.m. at the Hudson Funeral Home Chapel in Durham, with the Rev. Greg Clark officiating. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery in Durham.
The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7-8:30 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Rose and James Woods, 826 Patterson Road.

Clara Clois Clontz Wilson

Mrs. Clara Clois Clontz Wilson, 71, of Marion, N.C., died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005, at The McDowell Hospital.
She was born in McDowell County to the late Nelson Alfred Clontz and Pauline Hall Clontz.
Mrs. Wilson was a Special Education Teacher with Watauga County and McDowell County Schools. She was also certified as a homebound teacher for visually impaired students in McDowell County. She was a member and the former Secretary of the Board of Trustees of Foothills Mental Health. Mrs. Wilson was an active member of Cross Memorial Baptist Church. She was a former President of the Blue Ridge Baptist Association WMU and formerly active in various committees of the association. Her hobbies included crafts, sewing, knowledge in computers and traveling.
Survivors include her husband, Rev. Donald H. Wilson; two sons, Mark Wilson and wife, Cindy, of Weddington, N.C. and Steve Wilson and wife, Martha, of Boone, N.C.; two daughters, Wanda Queen and husband, Jerry, of Belmont, N.C. and Donna Carter and husband, Jerry, of Bluefield, W.V.; one brother, Nelson A. Clontz and wife, Eileen, of Media, Pa.; ten grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Keith Wilson.
Visitation services will be held Friday from 12:00 p.m. until 2 p.m., at Cross Memorial Baptist Church, with funeral services to follow at 2 p.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Mrs. Ruth Estella Hanawalt Petrey

Mrs. Ruth Estella Hanawalt Petrey, of 140 Eastridge Acres Court, Boone, died Tuesday morning, Jan. 18, 2005, at her home.

She was born July 19, 1919, in Logansport, Indiana, a daughter of the late Monroe and Anna Lusher Hanawalt.

Mrs. Petrey was a member of the Boone United Methodist Church since 1949. She served in the United Methodist Women organizations, both local and district. Mrs. Petrey was a founder and director of the BUMC Child Development Center for 11 years, and superintendent of the Birth through Sixth Grade program at the church. She was also honored as the BUMC Layperson of the Year.

In the community, Mrs. Petrey was honored for serving on the Watauga County Children’s Council, as Watauga County Woman of the Year, as Outstanding Senior Citizen from the Boone Jaycees, as Outstanding Citizen from the Watauga County League of Women Voters, Volunteer of the Year for the Watauga County Correctional Center Inmates, Outstanding Volunteer for Family Living (NWNC Developmental Association), NCECA 2000 Leadership Award, Master Waste Manager from the Cooperative Extension Service of N.C., and was a member of Town and Country Extension Club. Mrs. Petrey was also a long time member of the Boone Garden Club.

Survivors include her husband, Earl Lancaster Petrey; three sons, Douglas Earl Petrey and wife, Angela, of Knightdale, N.C., Winston Stephen Petrey and wife, Karen, and Morgan Len Petrey and wife, Karen, both of Boone, N.C.; six grandchildren, Lauren Michelle Petrey and Adam Douglas Petrey, both of Knightdale, N.C.; Drew Stephen Petrey and wife, Fran, Molly Elizabeth Petrey, and Matthew Logan Petrey, all of Boone, N.C.; and Dustin Lee Petrey and wife, Daphne, of Fleetwood, N.C. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Russell and Joe Hanawalt; one sister, Liethel Hanawalt Sheerer; and several nieces and nephews.

The Rev. William Glen Proffit

Rev. William Glen Proffit, 92, of 214 Willow Lane, Todd and Glenbridge Health Care, Boone, died Sunday morning, Jan. 16, 2005, at Watauga Medical Center.

He was born Aug. 27, 1912, in the Meat Camp community of Watauga County, to the late John Frank and Floy Elizabeth Thomas Proffit.

Rev. Proffit was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a farmer. He retired from the former Vermont American Corporation in Boone and was a member and former pastor of the Church of Deliverance on Meat Camp Road.

Survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Suma Miller of Boone, Phyllis Eller and husband, James, of Mountain City, Tenn. and Jewel Thomas and husband, Albert, of Zionville; one brother, Ralph Proffit and wife, Mary Lee, of Boone; and six sisters-in-law, Mrs. Fannie Mae Proffit, Mrs. Virginia Smith and Mrs. Faye Miller, all of Boone; Mrs. Ann Miller and Mrs. Maggie Miller, both of Todd, and Mrs. Ocie Miller of Mountain City, Tenn. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews, including special nieces and caregivers, Evonne Miller Settle and Irene Norris, both of Boone.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Miller Proffit; a sister, Eva Proffit; and six brothers, Kermit Proffit, Cless Proffit, Marvin Proffit, Bernard Proffit, Ray Proffit and Dean Proffit.

Services were conducted Tuesday morning at 11 o’clock at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Bruce Miller and the Rev. Delmar James officiating. Military graveside honors and burial followed at Pleasant Valley Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mrs. Jennie Lydia McBride Boger

Mrs. Jennie Lydia McBride Boger of 2274 Flowes Store Road East, Concord, N.C., died Jan. 17, 2005, at Carolinas Medical Center.

She was born in Alleghany County (Piney Creek), near Sparta, N.C., on Jan. 31, 1907. She was the daughter of the late Robert William and Nina Edwards McBride.

Mrs. Boger was a graduate of Ronda High School and Appalachian State University. She came from Wilkes County in 1929, to teach at Bethel High School where she taught for 44 years, until her retirement in 1973.

She was a member of the Cabarrus Black Boys Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Dodson Ramseur Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, and the North Carolina Retired Teachers Association.

Mrs. Boger was a member of Howell’s Baptist Church, where she served as Principal of Vacation Bible Schools, President of the Women’s Missionary Society, and taught a Sunday School Class for many years.

In 1997 she was one of six Appalachian State University alumni honored and inducted into the Reich College of Education Rhododendron Society for her professional accomplishments and contributions to education. Membership in the Rhododendron Society is the highest honor bestowed by Appalachian’s Reich College of Education.

Survivors include a daughter, Jennie Lynn Morrison and husband, Bill; a granddaughter, Mary Elizabeth Morrison, all of Concord; one sister, Willye Velda Stevens of Asheville, N.C.; a brother, George V. McBride of Jacksonville, Fla.; and 12 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Robert Luther Boger.

Services will be held Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Howell’s Baptist Church with the Rev. Cal Sayles officiating. Internment will be graveside at The Boger’s Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Hartsell Funeral Home in Concord.

Mr. George Wayne Carter

Mr. George Wayne Carter, 57, of Poplar Grove Road, Boone, died Monday afternoon, Jan. 17, 2005 at Watauga Medical Center.

He was born Dec. 16, 1947, in Tallassee, Ala., a son of George Looper and Mary Lee Duck Carter.

Mr. Carter was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Korea  during the Viet Nam Era. Before moving to Boone in 2001 to live with his son, Patrick, he was a Real Estate Instructor in Brevard County, Fla. for 20 years. In Boone, he was employed as a dispatcher and driver for AppalCART.

Survivors include one son, Patrick Wayne Carter of Boone; and one brother, Mickey Joe Carter of Port St. Lucie, Fla.

There will be no services.

George David Farthing

Mr. George David Farthing, 90, of Vilas, the Bethel community, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, at the Watauga Medical Center.

He was born Nov. 20, 1914 in the Bethel community to William Young and Naomi Perry Farthing.

Mr. Farthing was a graduate of Bethel High School. At an early age he joined Bethel Baptist Church. As an active member, he served on various committees, including 20 years service as church treasurer. From 1943 to 1954 he owned and operated the Watauga Telephone System. In 1954 he sold the system to Skyline Telephone Membership Corporation, but continued to operate his system until 1957, until Skyline had their system ready to go into operation. In addition to operating the telephone system and a grade A dairy, he did much community work, serving as presiding officer of the Bethel Community Club and the Beaver Dam Grange. He was known to be the best neighbor in the community. When others needed assistance, or just to borrow a piece of machinery, they knew they could always call on Mr. Farthing.

Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Loy Farthing; two children, Anne F. Herlong of Ridge Springs, S.C., and John David Farthing and his wife, Christy, of Morganton. Four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren also survive.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Perry, Dana and Ivan Farthing; and one sister, Nanny Farthing Swift.

Graveside services were conducted Saturday afternoon, Jan. 8, at the Winfield Scott Farthing Cemetery, officiated by the Rev. Charles McKnight.

Grace Walser Greene

Mrs. Grace Walser Greene, 85, of 167 Possum Hollow Road, Blowing Rock, wife of the late Stacy S. Greene, died Friday morning, Jan. 14, 2005, at Watauga Medical Center.

She was born Feb. 16, 1919, in Blowing Rock, Watauga County, to the late Charles Robert and Dovie Earp Walser.

Mrs. Greene graduated from Blowing Rock High School and retired from Blowing Rock Hospital in 1981 after 20 years of service as Dietary Manager. She was a homemaker and a member of Laurel Fork Baptist Church.

Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Susie Underwood of Vilas; two nieces, Joan Sharpe and husband, Paul, and Barbara Beach and husband, Brent, all of Boone; and two nephews, Carl Underwood and wife, Michelle, of Vilas and Wayne Greene and wife, Linda, of Old Fort. She is also survived by a number of great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Lois Greene; and two brothers, John Walser and Paul Walser.

Services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Laurel Fork Baptist Church, officiated by Dr. Daniel Featherstone. Burial followed in Woodlawn Cemetery in Blowing Rock.

Fred William Harmon

Mr. Fred William Harmon, 95, of Highway 421 North, Vilas, died Saturday evening, Jan. 15, 2005, at the Watauga Medical Center.

He was born Jan. 1, 1910 in Watauga County, a son of Joel Wayne and Nora Mae Mast Harmon.

Mr. Harmon was a member of Brushy Fork Baptist Church. He was a retired salesman from Watauga Builders Supply.

Survivors include one son, Barton Lane Harmon and wife, Marcia, of Vilas; two grandchildren, Vonda Sharpe and husband, James, and Eric Harmon and wife, Jessica, all of Vilas; and four great-grandchildren, Brandon and Ashtyn Mast and Jacob and Kayla Ann Harmon.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jessie Mae Tester Harmon; his second wife, Belle Pennell Harmon; two infant sons and one infant daughter; and three sisters, Ruby Cannon, Cleo Tester and Berlie Cross.

Services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Andy McFarland and the Rev. Jeff Woods.

The body will lie in state at the chapel from 1-2 p.m. Burial will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens.

John Vernon Idol

Mr. John Vernon Idol, 87, of Boone Trail, North Wilkesboro, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, at Blowing Rock Hospital.

He was born March 28, 1917 in Watauga County, to Joseph Anderson and Fleetie Bell Watson Idol.

Mr. Idol received a B.S. and a Master’s Degree from Appalachian State Teachers College. He served in the United States Army during World War II.

He hegan his career in education as principal at Deep Gap School in Watauga County, then came to Wilkes County in 1947 to teach at Mt. Pleasant High School, served as assistant principal and then principal of Millers Creek High School. From 1954 until 1956 he served as Millers Creek District Principal. When the schools were consolidated, he became principal of West Wilkes District Schools. In the early 1960s, he served as Assistant Superintendent of Wilkes County Schools. Mr. Idol helped prepare the application to start Wilkes Community College. He served the college as Dean for Student Services and then Vice President for Student Services until his retirement in 1978.

Mr. Idol was elected to the Wilkes County Board of Education and was appointed as trustee of Wilkes Community College. He was a member and Past Master of Mt. Pleasant Masonic Lodge #573, a charter member and Past Worthy Patron of Mt. Pleasant Chapter #67 Order of the Eastern Star, served as President of the Kiwanis Club, life member of the V.F.W. Post #1142, served on the North Carolina Athletic Association, Past President of the Appalachian Alumni Association, Past President of the Wilkes County N.C.E.A. and Northwestern District N.C.E.A., served as director of the Wilkes Y.M.C.A., Northwestern and First Union Bank, President of the Northwest Development Association, a member of the Dixie Classic Fair Commission and was a past moderator of The Brushy Mountain Baptist Association. He was a member and deacon of Lewis Fork Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Etta Lee Triplett Idol; one daughter, Sharon Ann Oxford of Winston-Salem; one son, John Franklin Idol of Greensboro; one sister, Lucille Wilson of Boone; four grandchildren, John Sterling Oxford of Oxford, Miss., Clayton Harris Oxford of Winston-Salem, Sarah Whitley Oxford of Mont Eagle, Tenn. and Kathryn Leigh Idol of Chapel Hill.

Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 p.m., at Lewis Fork Baptist Church with the Rev. Sherrill Wellborn officiating. Burial with Masonic Rites by Mt. Pleasant Post #573 will be in the church cemetery.

Jean Weeks Padgett Ross

Mrs. Jean Weeks Padgett Ross, 83, of Cresent Avenue, Greenville, S.C., died Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, at the Watauga Medical Center.

She was born Oct. 18, 1921, in Spartanburg, S.C., a daughter of the late James Colton and Josie Bryson Weeks.

Mrs. Ross was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Greenville. She was retired from C. Dan Joyner & Co., where she worked in real estate sales. Formerly she had worked as a designer for Stone Manufacturing Company, in public relations for Pepsi and Seven Up for Hartness Bottling Company, and as a designer for D.J. Joyner Designs.

Survivors include one daughter, Patricia Padgett Quinn and husband, Charles, of Boone; three grandchildren, Tricia Quinn Cottingham of Kernersville, N.C., Charles Quinn, Jr., and wife, Kim, of Boone, and Meg Quinn of Greenville, S.C.; six great-grandchildren, Catherine and Michael Cottingham, Ashley, Chas, Casey, and Allison Quinn; two sisters, Bebe Gibbs of Talking Rock, Ga., and Ann Jumper of Chattanooga, Tenn.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar A. Ross; and one sister, Margaret Ross.

Roy Luke Wagner

Mr. Roy Luke Wagner, 77, of Zionville, died Thursday night, Jan. 13, 2005, at Ashe Living Center in Jefferson.

He was born Nov. 9, 1927, in Leona Mines, Lee County, Va., to the late Lee Roy and Florence Potter Wagner.

Mr. Wagner graduated from high school in Roan Creek, Tenn. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a retired concrete finisher from Greene Construction Company in Boone.

Survivors include one son, J.R. Wagner and wife, Gwen, of Zionville; one granddaughter, Jessica Reese and husband, Steve, of Mountain City, Tenn.; one grandson, Justin Lee Wagner of Zionville; one great-grandson, Steve Reese; and two great-granddaughters, Hannah Reese and Megan Reese, all of Mountain City; one brother, Bill Wagner and wife, Shirley, of Mountain City; and one sister, Jennie Lee Wagner and husband, Richard Pennington, of Danville, Va. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Artruda Stevens Wagner.

Services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Carl Johnson and the Rev. Russell Cook officiating. Entombment followed in the Zionville Mausoleum.

Etolia Foster Welborn

Mrs. Etolia Foster Welborn, 91, of Boone Trail, North Wilkesboro, widow of Paul Dixon Welborn, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, at Southwestern Regional Medical Center in Lumberton.

She was born Feb. 1, 1913 in Wilkes County, to Grant and Frances Summerlin Foster.

Mrs. Welborn was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church and Mount Pleasant Eastern Star.

Survivors include one daughter, Mary Nell Maloney and husband, John, of Lumberton; three sons, Paul Welborn, Sr. and wife, Anne, of Mountain City, Tenn., Bob Welborn and wife, Dorothy, of Millers Creek, and Dickie Lee Welborn and wife, Gail, of Purlear; nine grandchildren, Paul Welborn Jr., Andy Welborn, both of Mountain City, Tenn.; Randy Welborn, Greg Welborn, both of Millers Creek; Angela Barnes of Wilkesboro; Derek Welborn of North Wilkesboro; Darren Welborn of Mooresville; Donna Phillips of Purlear and Jason Welborn, both of Pembroke, N.C.; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with the Rev. Clifford Johnson officiating. Burial followed in Mount Zion Baptist Church Cemetery at Ferguson.

Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in North Wilkesboro, was in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Guy Spencer Dyer
Mr. Guy Spencer Dyer, 55, of 273 Old Anderson Quarry Road, Vilas, died Wednesday morning, Jan. 12, 2005, at Watauga Medical Center.
He was born Dec. 13, 1949, in Boone, Watauga County, to the late Ernest Spencer and Margaret Earlene Church Dyer.
Mr. Dyer was a groundskeeper for Grandfather Golf & Country Club and a member of Doe Ridge Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Ala Sue Davis Dyer, and one son, Spencer Dyer, both of Collettsville; one daughter, Vickie Presnell and husband, Keith, of Banner Elk (Beech Creek); three sisters, Margaret Presnell and husband, Junior, Bronda Dyer and Debbie Gragg and husband, Ray, all of Boone; and two brothers, Edward Dyer of Boone and Rhonda ÒWoodyÓ Dyer of Mountain City, Tenn. He is also survived by two grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Services were conducted Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. at Hampton Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Arville Hardy and Mr. Finley Hodges. Burial followed in Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens.
Hampton Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.

 

Bobby Sterling Smith

Mr. Bobby Sterling Smith, 72, of Deep Gap, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005, at his home.
He was born in Watauga County, Sept. 27,1932, to Sterling and Patty Ann May Smith.
Survivors include his wife, Sue Davis Smith; one sister, Barbara Hartley and husband, Tommy, of Boone, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Betty Jo Evert.
Private graveside services were held Thursday, Jan. 13, at Ashelawn Memorial Gardens with military rites. Rev. J. D. Walton officiated.
