
Charles Hurd ‘Chuck’ Davis Jr.
Mr. Charles Hurd “Chuck” Davis, Jr., of Morningside Circle, Blowing Rock, died Monday evening, May 12, 2008, at his home.
He was born April 1, 1926 in Winston-Salem to the late Charles Hurd Davis, Sr. and Emma McKenzie Davis.
Mr. Davis was a member of Middle Fork Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Virginia Military Institute with a degree in Civil Engineering and completed his graduate work at Yale University in Planning and Development. He owned and operated Atlantic Plan Engineering in Hickory and was a charter member of the Lake Norman Yacht Club. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Rebecca Greene Davis; one son, Nathan Lannine Davis and wife, Jessica, of Charlotte; four daughters, Rebecca Davis of Burbank, Calif., Lynn Hobbit and husband, Forrest, of Richmond, Va., Suzanne Davis-Weatherhill and husband, Jim, of Grand Canyon, Ariz., and Georgia Brown and husband, David, of Richmond, Va.; one step-son, Jonathan Ward and wife, Stephanie, of Trade, Tenn.; and one step-daughter, Shannon Myers of Fallon, Nev.; five grandchildren, Samantha Giles, Elizabeth Grace Myers, Jeffrey Giles, Brayden Myers and Stryker Ward.; and one brother, Dr. John Davis of Charles Town, West Virginia.
In addition to his parents, Charles Hurd Davis, Sr. and Emma McKenzie Davis, he was preceded in death by one brother, Dr. Richard Davis.
Memorial services were conducted Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the First Baptist Church in Blowing Rock, officiated by the Rev. George Patton and the Rev. Rhonda Gailes. The family received friends Thursday afternoon from 1 until 2 o’clock at the church.

Margaret Sue Norwood, 58, of Banner Elk, passed away Saturday, May 10, 2008 at the Cannon Memorial Hospital in Linville.
A native of Watauga County, she was a member of the Vanderpool Baptist Church. She loved reading and growing flowers.
She worked for Broyhill Furniture in Lenoir.
Survivors include: Harlan Dale Norwood of the home; daughters, Jeannie Jones, and her husband, Eric, of Dallas, N.C., Tammy Benge of Lenoir; step-daughter, Audrey Ann Johnson, and her husband, Mark Johnson, Sr. of Banner Elk; son, Ruston Jones, and his wife, Elizabeth, of Bluefield, WV; brothers, Clifford Jones, and his wife, Wanda, of Boone, Russell Jones, and his wife, Blanche, of Bessemer City, Dewey Ralph “Red” Jones, and his wife, Vivian, of Lenoir; sister, Jean Mains, and her husband, Ronnie, of Mountain City, TN; grandchildren, Jacob Colson and Dakota Jones; step-grandchildren, Mark Johnson, Jr., Missy Johnson, Mary Ann Johnson; sisters-in-law, Celia Jones of Foscoe and Mabel Jones of Boone.

Funeral services were conducted at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 13, 2008 from the Grandfather Chapel with Mr. Jim Greene, the Rev. Dan Church, and the Rev. Ronnie Jones officiating. Interment followed in the White Rock Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Cliff Brown, Mark Johnson, Mark Johnson Jr., Tony Storie, Randall Jones, Terry Jones and Ronnie Mains. Honorary pallbearer was Ronnie Jones.
The family received friends one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.

Lucile Mast Wallace
Mrs. Lucile Mast Wallace, 96, of Milton Brown Heirs Road, Boone, died Wednesday morning, May 14, 2008 at Glenbridge Health & Rehab.
She was born Feb. 15, 1912 in Watauga County, the daughter of the late Milton McLean and Floy Cottrell Mast.
Mrs. Wallace was a charter member of Greenway Baptist Church, a member of the N.C. Retired School Personnel, and a volunteer at Watauga Medical Center for 18 years. She was a retired librarian, and was active in community affairs.
Surviving are one daughter, Margaret Stewart and husband, Gene, of Monroe; one granddaughter, Shelley Simkins and husband, Jesse, of Clearlake, Minn.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Custer William Wallace.
Services will be conducted Friday morning at 10:30 at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home. Officiating will be Dr. David Luster. Burial will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park & Gardens. The family will receive friends Friday morning prior to the service from 9 o’clock until 10:30 at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home.

Alma Louise Eller
Ms. Alma Louise Eller, 62, of Lenoir and formerly of Boone, died Sunday afternoon, May 11, 2008 at Frye Regional Medical Center.
She was born in Watauga County, Jan. 23, 1946, a daughter of the late James W. and Janie Smith Eller.
Mrs. Eller was a housekeeper at Watauga Medical Center.
Surviving are one son, Andy Eller and wife, Kate; one granddaughter, Lily Eller, all of Lenoir; two brothers, James Eller and wife, Phyllis, of Mountain City, Tenn., and Lee Eller of Granite Falls; four sisters, Charlotte Lawson and husband, Haskel, of Hillsville, Va., Nan Cornell and husband, Joe, of Lenoir, Ann Eller of Lenoir, and Stella Jean Eller of Boone.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James W. and Janie Smith Eller; two brothers, Charlie and Mack Eller; and three sisters, Ruth Hardin, Maude Westheimer, and Vivian Eller.
Memorial services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends prior to the service Thursday afternoon from 1 until 2 o’clock.

Marie Norman Ubbens
Mrs. Marie Norman Ubbens, 80, of Lake Wales, Fla. and Blowing Rock, died Friday, May 9, 2008 at her home.
She was born in Carteret, N.J., on March 2, 1928 and moved to Lake Wales 42 years ago from Lakeland, Fla.
Mrs. Ubbens retired after 35 years as an elementary school teacher. She was a member of the D.A.R., A.A.U.W., and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Wales and attended Rumple Memorial Presbyterian Church of Blowing Rock. She was active in community volunteer work and international mission work in Mexico and Pakistan.
Her husband Arthur Ubbens, daughter Barbara N. Pido of Winter Haven, son, Richard H. Norman and his wife, Candace Jones Norman, of Hickory, N.C., five stepchildren, her grandchildren Richard “Chip” Norman and Autumn N. Keppler, 13 step-grandchildren, five step-great-grandchildren, her brother Allen K. Wood of Clemson, S.C., brother-in-law Willard H. Norman, and her canine companion T.J. survive her.
Her husbands, Harlen Norman and Julian Clary preceded her in death.
Visitation was held Tuesday, May 13, 2008, from 9-11:00 a.m. before the service 11 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church with Pastor David M. Rockness officiating. Interment followed at Lakeland Memorial Gardens.

Viola Miller Culler
Mrs. Viola Miller Culler, 93, of Boone, the Rich Mountain Community, died Friday morning, May 9, 2008 at Watauga Medical Center.
She was born Dec. 19, 1914 in Watauga County to the late Alfred Wayne and Josie Hamby Miller.
Mrs. Culler was a member of Rich Mountain Baptist Church.
Surviving are one daughter, Ellen Fordham of California and Boone; one grandson, Patrick Fordham; one great-granddaughter, Jessica Van Reenan of Huntington Beach, Calif.; one sister, Louise Huffman of Hickory; and two brothers, Gordon Miller of Texas and Ralph Miller of Boone.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Armon Culler; and three brothers, Roy, Mack and Rex Miller; and one sister, Jessie Culler.
Services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock at Austin & Barnes Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating was the Rev. Tim Gouge. Burial followed in the Culler Cemetery.

Dave Main
Mr. Dave Main, 97, of 2010 Casstevens Road, Yadkinville, died Friday morning, May 9, 2008, at Hoots Memorial Hospital in Yadkinville.
He was born July 20, 1910 in Watauga County, a son of the late General Washington and Alemdia Potter Main.
Mr. Main was the retired owner of Main Grocery in Tamerack. He helped to build Watauga Lake in Butler, Tenn., and also hauled bean pickers to Mountain City. He worked for Tom Miller at the Cardinal Rest Home for 23 years.
Survivors include three daughters, Charlotte Parsons and friend Johnny Bunton of Union Grove, Gail Smith and husband, Kenneth, and Betty Jo Matthews and husband, Don, all of Yadkinville; one granddaughter, Vickie Smith and husband, Jimmy, of Pauline, S.C.; five grandsons, R.L. Main of Yadkinville, Jackie Parson and friend Marsha of Union Grove, Thomas Trivette and wife, Lynn, of Yadkinville, Glenn Trivette and wife, Lynne, of Ronda, and Justin Matthews of Yadkinville; two step-granddaughters, Donna Thurman of Conover, Crystal Richardson and husband, Chris, of East Bend; one step-grandson, Kenny Smith and wife, Shirl, of Conover; and one daughter-in-law, Ivalee Vines of Creston. He is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, six step great-grandchildren, four step great-great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Ellison Main; two sons, David Main, Jr., and Dana Main; three daughters, Gwyndola Main, Sylva Jean Main, and Darlene Main; one son-in-law, Jack Parson; three brothers, Frank, George, and Clarence Main; three sisters, Bertie Potter, Ola Miller, and Ellie Lawrence; and one granddaughter-in-law, Kathleen Main.
Services will be conducted Monday afternoon, May 12, 2008, at 2:00 o'clock, at Elk Knob Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 1:00 until 2:00 o'clock. Officiating will be the Rev. J.C. Greene, the Rev. Gene Ward, and the Rev. Herbert McCoy. Burial will follow in the Main Family Cemetery.
